KKRTC generates ₹2,375 crore revenue through Shakti scheme in two years
The Congress-led government's Shakti scheme, which offers free travel to women commuters in government buses, has generated a traffic revenue of ₹2,375 crore to the Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) in the last two years. The women passengers in eight districts coming under KKRTC jurisdiction, have benefited around 67.91 crore free rides since its launch in June 2023 to May 2025 and the total ticket revenue generated was ₹2,375 crore. As per the data provided by KKRTC, the scheme had witnessed a surge in number of women passengers; to cope with the increased demand for public transportation the KKRTC has increased its schedules from 4,028 to 4,689 schedules, with an increase of 661 schedules. Similarly the number of daily trips too went up from 22,214 to 27,528 trips. Nearly 9.42 lakh women in eight districts of KKRTC jurisdiction avail benefit of Shakti scheme every day. Of the eight districts, Kalaburagi district recorded the highest number of trips by women passengers with 13.55 crore trips generating a ticket revenue of ₹459 crore followed by Vijayapura district with 13.09 crore trips and a ticket revenue of ₹427 crore. Raichur district recorded 8.41 crore trips with a revenue of ₹330 crore; Bidar district with 8.19 crore trips generated a revenue of ₹236 crore. While Koppal district recorded 7.78 crore trips with ₹278 crore revenue, Vijayanagar district with 6.96 crore trips generated a revenue of ₹268 crore. In Ballari district, there were 4.94 crore trips with ₹189 crore and Yadgir district recorded 4.95 crore trips with a revenue of ₹184 crore in the two years. Of the ₹2,375 crore, the State government has cleared a sum of ₹1,800 crore towards ticket reimbursement and ₹575 crore was pending. The KKRTC has recently recruited 600 driver-cum-conductors, of which 500 were deployed as conductors; even then the corporation was facing shortage of conductors due to increase in number of daily shuttles, an official said.

Expo on state govt's achievements at bus terminus
Ballari: An exhibition highlighting the state govt's achievements over the past two years has been set up at the Central Bus Terminus on Tank Bund Road. Mayor Mullangi Nandish on Friday inaugurated the exhibition being organised in collaboration with the district administration, zilla panchayat, information and public relations department, and KKRTC (Ballari division). "The Congress govt in Karnataka has reached the two-year mark and successfully implemented the five guarantee schemes promised to the people of the state, enhancing their living standards. The expo will showcase the same," said the Mayor. K E Chidanandappa, chairman of the district guarantee schemes implementation authority, said the govt, led by chief minister Siddaramaiah, honoured its commitments. The exhibition features information on several initiatives, including the state govt's ambitious programmes like Shakti Yojana, Annabhagya, Gruha Lakshmi, Gruha Jyothi, and Yuva Nidhi, with an additional display illustrating the district's development. ADC Mohammed Zaber N said information on how to access the benefits of these govt-implemented schemes is also being shared.

Over Rs 11,994 cr worth free tickets issued as ‘Shakti' scheme turns 2
Bengaluru: The Karnataka government's ambitious 'Shakti' scheme, one of the five key guarantees announced by the ruling Congress party, has completed two successful years. Launched on June 11, the scheme has so far enabled over 474 crore women to travel free of cost on state-run buses across Karnataka. During this period, transport corporations have issued tickets worth Rs 11,994 crore, which the state government has committed to reimburse. Implemented immediately after the Congress came to power, the Shakti scheme was the first of the guarantee programmes to be rolled out. Transport officials say the scheme has received overwhelming public response, significantly increasing the number of women passengers. Interestingly, there has also been a rise in the number of male passengers, likely due to the improved accessibility and frequency of services prompted by the scheme. The program has drawn attention from other states as well. Officials from the Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation recently visited Karnataka to understand the operational framework, challenges, and execution model of the Shakti scheme. Between June 11, 2023 and June 10, 2025, over 474.82 crore women travelled for free across the four state-run bus corporations—Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC), and North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC). On average, 65 lakh women have used the scheme daily. During this two-year period, the government has issued tickets worth Rs11,994.37 crore to women passengers alone. This translates to an average of Rs16.5 crore worth of free tickets per day. These amounts are being reimbursed directly by the government to the respective corporations to ensure operational sustainability. As per data provided by KSRTC, the total number of passengers, including men, who used services of the four corporations during this time was 801.54 crore. Of the total female ridership, BMTC accounted for 150 crore passengers, followed by KSRTC with 144 crore, NWKRTC with 111 crore, and KKRTC with 68 crore. In terms of ticket value for women passengers, KSRTC topped the list with Rs4,556 crore, followed by NWKRTC at Rs2,968 crore, KKRTC at Rs2,408 crore, and BMTC at Rs2,061 crore. Although the government had announced that beneficiaries would be issued Shakti Smart Cards, these have not yet been distributed. As a result, women are currently using Aadhaar cards to avail the free travel benefit. The scheme has also had a positive impact on tourism, particularly to religious destinations, with transport corporations observing a surge in footfall to pilgrimage sites. However, the sharp rise in ridership has increased pressure on the existing fleet of buses, especially older ones. In response, the state government has announced the procurement of 4,000 new buses to manage the additional demand generated by the scheme.

Karnataka's Shakti scheme completes two years
The Shakti scheme, Karnataka's free bus travel initiative for women, marked its second anniversary on June 11 with over 474 crore women passengers having availed the benefit across the State. Launched on June 11, 2023, by the Congress government, the scheme was one of the five major pre-poll guarantees. The scheme allows women with Karnataka domicile to travel for free in non-premium government buses operated by the four State-run transport corporations-KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC and KKRTC. According to data shared by the transport department, between June 11, 2023, and June 10, 2025, the four c!orporations together recorded a total of 801.54 crore passenger journeys. Of these, 474.82 crore were women passengers travelling under the Shakti scheme. The largest number of women beneficiaries were recorded in the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) with over 150.69 crore female passengers. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) followed with 144.23 crore, while North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) reported 111.10 crore and 68.78 crore, respectively. The total notional ticket value for the free rides availed by women over the two years stands at ₹11,994.37 crore, which the State Government reimburses to the corporations. Under the scheme, women can board ordinary and express services within Karnataka by showing valid ID proof issued by the State Government or any Central Government document that confirms domicile. Premium services such as Airavat, Rajahamsa and Vajra are excluded. Even though the Shakti Scheme has completed two years, the smart cards meant for beneficiaries are yet to be distributed. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that the plan to issue smart cards is in place, but the rollout is delayed due to the lack of electronic ticketing machines (ETMs) in all buses, making implementation unfeasible. Currently, women passengers avail free travel by presenting a valid identity card issued by the Central or State government to obtain a 'zero ticket'.

Constable misbehaves with bus passengers, breaks windshield
Devdurg (Raichur): A head constable named Srinivas has been accused of damaging the windshield of a KKRTC bus and behaving inappropriately with his fellow passengers. "Srinivas, who boarded the Devdurg-Raichur bus around 3pm on Thursday, verbally abused other passengers over a seating dispute. The situation escalated when he started throwing stones, leading to damage to the windshield of the bus," said driver Suresh Babu. The incident was recorded by bystanders on their mobile phones, prompting a complaint to be filed against him by the bus driver and the passengers. Depot manager Ramangouda said the head constable's misconduct was clearly evident. "I have instructed the conductor-cum-driver to file a police complaint," he added. According to sources, the accused head constable was previously suspended four times for his disruptive behaviour. Devdurg police inspector Manjunath S said appropriate measures will be taken once necessary information is obtained from the relevant parties.
