PETALING JAYA: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) has been honoured with the 2025 Asean PR Excellence Award in the Social Impact category at the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference 7 (KLIP7). Deputy Secretary-General (Operations) Farah Adura Hamidi accepted the award on behalf of the ministry. In a statement, KPWKM said the award reflects its ongoing commitment to advancing the rights and wellbeing of women, families and communities in line with the Madani vision. 'Among the notable initiatives highlighted were the K.A.S.I.H KPWKM Peduli Rakyat programme which covers aid distribution, temporary relief centre (PPS) operations and post-disaster support provided by the Social Welfare Department (JKM),' it said. The ministry also cited its psychosocial support services offered through the One-Stop Social Support Centres (PSSS), managed by the National Welfare Foundation (YKN) and the Malaysian Board of Counsellors, along with the 24-hour Talian Kasih 15999 hotline, which provides immediate assistance to individuals in crisis. Its outreach efforts in remote communities, including the Kembara KASIH KPWKM and Ziarah KASIH KPWKM programmes, aimed at assisting disaster victims, were also recognised. KPWKM said it remains committed to empowering women, protecting children, supporting persons with disabilities and senior citizens, and strengthening the family unit. Internationally, the ministry continues to represent Malaysia at global conventions on women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Malaysia set to launch AI guidelines for media, PR and digital content creation

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's upcoming Guidelines for Responsible AI Communication will provide a critical framework to support professionals across media, public relations and digital content creation, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the guidelines are to complement the country's National AI Roadmap and uphold ethical, transparent and trustworthy communication practices as artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly shapes public discourse. Fahmi said technology must serve humanity, not replace it, and urged communication professionals to lead with purpose, guided by inclusive and transparent principles. "We live in an age where communication is borderless and increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence … even as machines evolve, one thing must never change - human ethics and judgment must lead," said Fahmi in his keynote address via video message at the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7) here today. Addressing the forum virtually from Geneva, where he is leading the Malaysian delegation to the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20), Fahmi said Malaysia's Asean chairmanship this year demands leadership anchored not just in authority, but also in vision, empathy and ethics. He praised KLIP 7's theme "Impactful AI, Social Media Communication and Online Education" as highly relevant, noting the transformative role technology plays in how information is consumed and communicated. The minister also highlighted the Venice Pledge, endorsed by the Global Alliance for Public Relations, as an emerging global benchmark for ethical, human-led AI communication. "I'm proud to note that the president of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), Jaffri Amin Osman, and, of course, a Malaysian, is part of the Global Alliance board and has played a key role in shaping the Venice Pledge," he said. He also congratulated the recipients of the Asean PR Excellence Awards. Since its inception in 2019, KLIP has been a pivotal global conference for PR and communication leaders, professionals, as well as academics from Asean and beyond, fostering the sharing of the latest industry insights. This year, KLIP will feature international, Asean as well as national keynote speakers, panel discussions and interactive sessions, providing valuable insights and networking opportunities for attendees. -BERNAMA

AI Not A Threat But A Teaching Aid In PR, Say Academics

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be embraced as a supportive tool in public relations (PR) education, but clear guidelines and a structured curriculum are essential to ensure ethical and responsible usage among students. Head of the Strategic Communication Centre at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Dr Wan Norbani Wan Noordin said that while AI is definitely a friend in the learning environment, the extent of its integration must be carefully managed through proper education and policy alignment. "We can't stop students from using AI, but I think you can help them to use it at the proper avenue. Yes, it is definitely a friend, but how much of a friend are we talking?" she said while speaking as a panelist during the session titled AI & PR: Friend or Foe? held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7), themed "Curiosity, Creativity, Clarity", here today. Other panelists were Associate Prof Dr Nurul'ain Mohd Hasan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM); Boy Kelana Soebroto from Indonesia; Jennifer Muir from Australia; Fiona Cassidy from New Zealand; Ruby Wan from Hong Kong; Nguyen Khoa My from Vietnam; and Mohamed Ali from Singapore. Wan Norbani said many students are excited to use AI for idea generation and initial research, but she expressed concern over their limited ability to verify sources despite being in higher education. She added that although Gen Z and Alpha students are digital native, they still need ethical guidance and practical tools, noting the absence of a standardised AI or AI-and-PR subject, and stressing the need to formally introduce AI into public relations education. Wan Norbani said digital literacy and ethical values are embedded in most PR subjects and noted that students themselves suggested users should be transparent by declaring AI use, highlighting the need for structured education to ensure responsible and mature application. Meanwhile, Nurul'ain shared that her classroom study showed an 11 per cent improvement in students' understanding of PR concepts after using AI tools, noting that AI does not replace educators but serves as a colleague, research partner, and teaching aid. "We need to expose students to ethical and responsible use of AI. It's not about full dependence, but thoughtful application," she said, adding that AI should be seen as a valuable tool in PR education, not a threat.

Malaysia to launch AI guidelines for media and digital content

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is preparing to introduce the Guidelines for Responsible AI Communication, a framework designed to guide professionals in media, public relations, and digital content creation. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasised that these guidelines will align with the National AI Roadmap, ensuring ethical and transparent practices as AI continues to influence public discourse. Fahmi highlighted the importance of human oversight in AI-driven communication, stating, 'We live in an age where communication is borderless and increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence ... even as machines evolve, one thing must never change - human ethics and judgment must lead.' He made these remarks during his keynote address at the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7), delivered virtually from Geneva, where he is attending the WSIS+20 summit. The minister stressed that Malaysia's ASEAN chairmanship this year requires leadership rooted in vision, empathy, and ethics. He also commended the KLIP 7 theme, 'Impactful AI, Social Media Communication and Online Education,' for addressing the evolving role of technology in information sharing. Fahmi pointed to the Venice Pledge, a global standard for ethical AI communication, as a key reference. He acknowledged the contributions of Jaffri Amin Osman, president of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), in shaping the pledge as part of the Global Alliance for Public Relations. The conference, now in its fifth year, serves as a platform for PR and communication professionals, academics, and industry leaders from ASEAN and beyond. This year's event includes keynote speeches, panel discussions, and networking sessions, offering insights into the latest trends in AI and digital communication. – Bernama
