KLMRD Celebrating Football, Friendship, and Giving Back

Nearly 400 passionate Manchester United fans came together for United Malaysia's 7th Annual Dinner and Charity Gala – an annual celebration of unity, passion, and purpose. This year's event was hosted by Kuala Lumpur Mancunian Red Devils (KLMRD) which took place on 12th July 2025 at Sunway Resort Hotel. Held under the theme 'United Unites, Together We Thrive', the event embodied the club's vision that 'United & Football is Above Everything Else.' The night saw overwhelming support from attendees, fellow supporter clubs, and special guests. Among the special guests present were Persatuan Sindrom Down Malaysia (PSDM) president Hanizan Hussin, National hockey legend Dato' Mirnawan Nawawi and Celebrity Stand-up comedian Kavin J. 'Charity is part of United's DNA,' said Anderson Tan, KLMRD President. 'We make it a point to select a different NGO every year to support, and this year we were honoured to stand with PSDM. 'As long as there's a need, we'll be there – volunteering, contributing, and standing with our community.' Seven deserving members were announced as recipients of an all-expense-paid trip to Old Trafford, the iconic home of Manchester United. Four were chosen from a raffle draw, while the remaining three deserving members were chosen by the respective clubs itself. For some, this marks their first-ever visit to the Theatre of Dreams – a lifelong dream finally fulfilled.

Manchester United fans left rueing as Tottenham win Europa League

PETALING JAYA: Manchester United fans bemoaned what could have been, as a strong Tottenham Hotspur performance in the Europa League final left them empty-handed once again this season. In Malaysia, local supporters of both clubs flocked to nearby venues airing the match, filled with hope that the competition might offer a silver lining to what has been a difficult campaign. United currently sit 16th in the league – a far cry from fans' expectations. Meeting at Piccadilly, members of the Kuala Lumpur Manchunian Red Devils Supporters Club (KLMRD), including father-son duo Rajan and Ajit, remained resilient in their support for the club. "We were relegated many years ago, and we came back," said Rajan. "So the motto is always 'we will rise again.'" Another KLMRD member, Gajen, did not hide his disappointment. "It's heartbreaking. Teams that are traditionally below United are now above us," he lamented. Despite nerves and uncertainty, fans stayed hopeful as the final kicked off in predictably cagey fashion, with both sides exchanging half-chances but neither goalkeeper being tested. This pattern continued as the game approached half-time. Then came a stroke of misfortune for United. A Pape Matar Sarr cross from the left was met by Brennan Johnson, who sliced the ball backwards instead of towards goal. It ricocheted off the unfortunate Luke Shaw and bounced into the net, handing Spurs the lead. The silence among United supporters was deafening as they processed the freak goal. But quickly, they rallied behind their team, urging them to respond before the break. KLMRD committee member Yogaraj said United were frustrated by the nature of the goal and expressed hope that Alejandro Garnacho would be introduced in the second half. Fellow United fan Ruzi remained confident, predicting a 3–1 victory. Another supporter, Dexter, added, "I'm not sure what [Rúben Amorim] is going to do, but we need a win tonight." The second half saw a reinvigorated Manchester United pushing forward with urgency. Fans' optimism briefly returned – but as time wore on, it began to fade. While United showed some attacking promise late in the game, it was not enough. Tottenham held on to claim their first major trophy in 17 years. "We lost due to a soft goal. Spurs were hardly in the game, and Onana was a spectator," said a visibly disappointed Yogaraj. "Garnacho's introduction brought some improvement. Unfortunately, we didn't score. "It will be interesting what we do during the upcoming transfer window"

'United Malaysia' prepares big welcome for returning Red Devils

KUALA LUMPUR: Manchester United will make their long-awaited return to Malaysia for the first time in 16 years and their die-hard fans from across the country are already gearing up to give the Red Devils a grand welcome back to Malaysian soil. The former Premier League champions will take on an Asean XI at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on May 28 — their first visit since their memorable 2009 tour. For the Malaysian chapters of United's global fanbase, the news has rekindled vivid memories and renewed excitement. The Kuala Lumpur Mancunian Red Devils supporters club (KLMRD) — with branches as far as Sabah and Sarawak — is ready to reunite under one banner: United Malaysia. "The passion here is undeniable," said KLMRD president Muhammad Anderson Tan. "We've got a strong network across the country and this visit is huge for all of us." The 2009 tour remains etched in the minds of many fans - not just for the football but the rare closeness they experienced with their heroes. Back then, thousands gathered to watch training sessions, snap photos and collect autographs. KLMRD member S. Jeevanesan recalled: "I met David Beckham at the airport. "I even managed to get a photo with him. That kind of moment stays with you for life." Michael Owen, a new signing at the time, scored his first goal for the Red Devils in front of a packed Bukit Jalil crowd, netting the winner in a thrilling 3-2 victory over a Malaysian XI, then coached by K. Rajagobal. In the second game, United ran out 2-0 winners - matches still discussed among local supporters today. "In 2009, access was easier. Now, it's all VIP passes and sponsor zones," said longtime fan T. Yogaraj. "We just hope fans like us are not forgotten." Still, hopes are high that this tour will bring fans closer to the club once again. KLMRD is actively seeking partnerships with event sponsors to ensure grassroots supporters are part of the experience — not just spectators in the stands. "We'll be there no matter what," said Jeevanesan. "Whether it's full strength or not, watching United live is always special." Even if the club's biggest stars don't all make the trip due to international commitments, for Malaysian fans, it's the badge — not the names — that matters most.
