80 Kolhapur students make it to state list in school scholarship exam

Kolhapur: Students excelled in the school scholarship exam, with two securing the top rank in the state merit list. The Maharashtra State Education Council declared the results for the Stds V and VIII exam on Thursday, revealing that 80 students from Kolhapur district were among the 422 state toppers from rural and urban areas. The first prize was bagged by Ishwari Digvijay Kotkar of ZP-run Vidya Mandir Sonali in Bhudargad tehsil, securing 294 of 300 marks in the Std V scholarship exam. The second and third ranks were bagged by the ZP school students too. "We have eight students in the state merit list this time. We have 44 students among the top 100 students from Kolhapur district. Last year, we had two students in the state merit list from Std V, who appeared for the scholarship exam," D C Kumbhar, administrative officer of KMC education board, said. The civic school is the most sought after for admissions by parents. In 2007, one of the students bagged the first rank in the state. Meena Shende, district primary education officer of Kolhapur ZP, said, "Twenty-seven students from the rural areas of the district have made it into the state merit list for the Std V scholarship exam and 18 in the Std VIII exam, which tests general knowledge, reasoning and mathematics. The total pass percentage of the students from Kolhapur district is around 36%, much higher than the state average." Sourabhi Suryakant Dawar from Kendra Shala Fejiwade in Radhanagar bagged the second rank in the state list with 292 marks. Shlok Shashikant Patil from Vitthal Vidyamandir Pedrewadi in Ajara tehsil came third with 290 marks in the Std V scholarship exam in the rural merit list. Jodhpur Park emerges as wettest zone, experts try to figure out why

1 2 Kolkata: Though storm water started receding from most parts of south Kolkata on Tuesday afternoon, neighbourhoods in and around Jodhpur Park and areas along the Anwar Shah connector remained waterlogged until late evening. The KMC-run Jodhpur Park drainage pumping station on Tuesday recorded the highest ever rainfall in its history — 280 mm by 2 pm. The unprecedented rainfall in areas under the drainage pumping station, including Jodhpur Park, Dhakuria, Lake Gardens, Keyatala, Garfa, and large stretches off the Anwar Shah connector (from Jadavpur police station to Avisikta crossing), went under water since Monday evening as torrential rains lashed these areas. The problem was compounded by spells of heavy rains since early Tuesday morning. A baffled KMC administration took several measures to flush out storm water from Jodhpur Park and its adjacent neighbourhoods. However, water receded at a very slow pace as BB canal and the intercepting canal that carried storm water from the Jodhpur Park drainage pumping station were overflowing and failed to carry extra water. As the KMC drainage department bosses received frantic calls from Jodhpur Park, Lake Gardens, and Dhakuria neighbourhoods, the department, out of desperation, sent several jetting-cum-suction machines to these areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo But the situation didn't improve until late evening. "Though storm water receded from several parts of Dhakuria, Jodhpur Park, and Lake Gardens in the evening, some pockets of Jodhpur Park market and large stretches of the Anwar Shah connector remained waterlogged until late evening," conceded a KMC drainage department official. "We sent five jetting-cum-suction machines to Jodhpur Park to clear the clogged sewer lines. Though they worked efficiently, the waterlogging scenario took time to change as the outfall canals that carry storm water failed to function," said a KMC official. Reacting to the intensity of rain in Jodhpur Park and its adjacent neighbourhoods, Alipore Met officials said that while the intensity of rain can differ from one locality to another, a massive difference between the localities was unlikely. "The intensity of rain can differ from one locality to another even within the city during spells of incessant rain. But a huge gap sounds aberrant," said Met scientist HR Biswas. Sources confirmed that while a difference of around 10 to 20 mm could happen, especially during incessant rain, between pockets in Kolkata due to localized weather phenomena, a massive difference is very unusual. "Sometimes calibration issues in equipment could also affect the rain count record," said a Met official. According to Met parlance, over 200 mm recorded at Jodhpur Park by the KMC's drainage pumping station comes under the extremely heavy rain category, which can cause massive flooding.

Demolition of dangerous structures begins

Amid debris and dust, workers carry out demolition of the rear section of Gudda Plaza of which some parts caved in earlier. PHOTO: JALAL QURESHI/EXPRESS Following the tragic collapse of a five-storey residential building in Lyari's Baghdadi area that claimed 27 lives, the authorities have launched a demolition drive targeting other dangerous structures in the vicinity. Teams from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) have begun tearing down dilapidated buildings identified as hazardous. According to Building Inspector Zulfiqar Shah, two buildings are currently being demolished in phases after evacuation, while a survey is underway for a third structure. Assistant Commissioner Lyari Shehryar Habib confirmed that all three buildings have been completely evacuated and temporary arrangements have been made to relocate the displaced residents to community centers and KMC-run schools. He added that it may take up to 10 to 15 days to completely demolish a single building. Meanwhile, affected residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the government's response and warned of protests if they are not compensated and provided permanent housing. They demanded clarity on the government's plan for their rehabilitation and vowed to raise their concerns at the Chief Minister's House, Governor House, and the Sindh Assembly. Security and rescue teams remain stationed in the area to oversee ongoing operations. Lyari collapse claims 27 lives as rescue operation concludes A 50-hour-long search and rescue operation in the Baghdadi area of Lyari - where a five-storey residential building collapsed on Friday morning - concluded on Sunday, with 27 confirmed deaths and 10 injuries. "Twenty-seven people lost their lives in the Lyari tragedy, while eleven others were injured. Among the deceased are eleven women and sixteen men, including a one-and-a-half-year-old girl," confirmed the Civil Hospital administration. The report states that 26 bodies were brought to the hospital, while 55-year-old Fatima succumbed to her injuries during treatment. "Of the injured, ten people were discharged after receiving medical treatment. However, 30-year-old Sanatia remains under treatment," it stated. The list further noted that most of the injured sustained head injuries in the incident. Many of the deceased belong to the Hindu community. According to rescue officials, the final body was recovered - after 48 hours of digging through debris - was that of 15-year-old Muhammad Zaid, found trapped near the building's staircase. His body was moved to Civil Hospital for legal formalities. Zaid's elder brother, who survived the collapse, told reporters he had tried to pull his younger sibling out of the building when the structure began to crack but lost his grip during the escape. Tragically, Zaid, their father, and two other brothers died in the collapse. According to Rescue 1122 officer Hasnain and Edhi Foundation volunteer Farooq, Zaid's body was found at a location from which five other bodies had previously been taken out. However, his was buried too deep under the rubble to be immediately detected. After renewed efforts by family members, search teams returned to the location and recovered Zaid's body using specialised equipment. During the operation, cash, cheques and jewellery were recovered from three separate locations and handed over to the local union council chairperson. Rescue 1122 South In-Charge Hameer Wahid told Express News that 95% of the debris had been cleared, and no further victims were believed to be trapped. "No families remain at the site waiting for missing persons," he said. He further added that rescue operations were deliberately prolonged to ensure careful recovery of bodies. Several rickshaws and motorcycles parked beneath the building were also destroyed. Locals said the area underneath the structure was routinely used for parking.

KMC's anti-vagabond drive runs into resistance, ops called off

1 2 3 Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and cops on Tuesday started a drive, for the first time this year, to oust pavement dwellers from several prime city areas but faced stiff resistance and called off the drive. Though the civic officials and cops during the special drive seized belongings of around 200 pavement dwellers, the civic officials finally convinced only five such dwellers to go to the KMC-run shelter house. According to plans, three different KMC teams started the drive from three locations: Park Circus-Beckbagan zone, Ballygunge-Gariahat zone, and Hazra-Alipore zone. When the civic officials and cops reached the Park Circus-Beckbagan belt and asked the pavement dwellers to move out of the approach road to AJC Bose Road, they fled. The civic officials seized their belongings and moved forward. When the cops and civic officials were busy playing a cat-and-mouse game in the Park Circus area, the second team in the Gariahat area faced real trouble as the pavement dwellers under the flyover turned violent. The cops present in large numbers helped the civic officials in removing their belongings. The pavement dwellers refused to move from the space, expressing their inability to move to a shelter house in the Kalighat area. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo In the Hazra-Alipore belt, sensing a civic drive, some pavement dwellers fled. Later, the KMC brass sent officials from its social welfare department and roped in a couple of NGOs that work among the homeless to conduct counselling so that the defiant pavement dwellers accept the civic proposal and leave the space. "We gave strict instructions to our officials and the cops not to do bodily damage to any of the pavement dwellers even if they don't fall in line. We have sought help from two NGOs who have experience in handling such issues. We hope this will yield some sort of results," said a senior civic official. However, the KMC brass has asked the cops to keep a constant vigil on the pavement dwellers and get ready for fresh drives in the coming weeks. According to a KMC source, the civic body planned a major drive to remove pavement dwellers after receiving frequent calls from across the city complaining about illegal encroachment of roads and spaces under flyovers. "We planned to conduct a raid only to clear roads and civic infrastructures. The complainants also expressed their apprehensions about the law-and-order situation at night. But we don't want the pavement dwellers to be deprived of their right to shelter. We have kept several shelter homes ready for them," said a KMC official. According to a KMC social welfare department official, the department runs seven such shelter homes across the city. Sources said the civic body planned to accommodate pavement dwellers from the Gariahat-Ballygunge zone at the Kalighat shelter home and dwellers from Park Circus-Beckbagan at a Beleghata shelter home.

Citizens recall contributions of KMC's first administrator

Kolhapur: Dwarkanath Kapoor was the first administrator of Kolhapur civic body, from 1972 to 1975, after it achieved the status of a corporation from a municipal after 50 years, many in Kolhapur still recall his immense contribution to the city. Kapoor contributed to building markets, beautification of Rankala Lake, building Savitribai Phule Hospital, development plan (DP) roads and gardens. He roped in architects and engineers for Sundar Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has been under the charge of an administrator for the last four-and-a-half years as the term of the civic body ended in Nov Adgule, a dformer KMC mayor, said, "You name any project in Kolhapur, and you will find most of them were built during Kapoor's time or his ideas were later implemented. He implemented the development plan and got major roads constructed. He used to be on the field most of the time during his tenure."Bhupal Shete, a former corporator, said, "If Kapoor had not been the administrator, then there would not have been any roads in slums. He was very keen on keeping the city clean. He refused staffers at his official residence, and instead deployed them for public works. Officers and staffers used to fear and respected him in equal measure. When I started work for leprosy patients, he helped me a lot. I remember him being present for cremation of a leprosy patient in KMC-run crematorium as the workers there refused to cremate leprosy patients."Kapoor envisioned making Bhausingji Road, connecting New Palace with Bhavani Mandap a 'royal street'. However, it could not happen because he was transferred to apartment building constructed by him for KMC workers now bears his name. Also, a school in Ganjimal is named after him. Such an honour has hardly been given to any civic chief in Kolhapur so in Kolhapur think that had Kapoor been in charge of the civic body during this period, the city would have looked much better and different.
