Kia begins mass production of next-gen military tactical vehicle in South Korea
Kia has officially begun mass production of its upgraded military transport vehicle , the next-generation Kia Medium Tactical Vehicle ( KMTV ), marking a significant milestone in the company's decades-long involvement in military mobility. The roll-out ceremony was held Tuesday at Kia's Autoland plant in Gwangju, about 270 kilometers south of Seoul, the automaker said. The event marks the introduction of the first new KMTV model in 48 years, following the debut of the original medium tactical vehicle in 1977. Features Developed under a contract with the South Korean Army awarded in December 2019, the new KMTV comes in two variants — a 2.5-ton model with a 280-horsepower diesel engine and a 5-ton version powered by a 330-horsepower unit. Both are equipped with 8-speed automatic transmissions. Beyond raw power, the new KMTV adds modern features such as air suspension seats, front and rear cameras, around-view monitoring, and a built-in navigation system. Kia says the vehicle also boasts improved payload capacity and enhanced protection features, aiming to appeal to both domestic and international defense customers. Deliveries to the South Korean Army are scheduled to begin this month, with plans to supply the vehicle to global markets in the near future. The announcement comes on the heels of Kia's participation in the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2025 in the UAE, where it showcased its full military portfolio, including the KMTV bare chassis, the Light Tactical Vehicle (KLTV) two-seater, and the company's first passenger pickup truck, the Tasman.

Seoul: Automaker Kia on Tuesday held a roll-out ceremony for its next-generation military medium tactical vehicle, marking the official start of mass production of the company's upgraded military transport vehicle. The ceremony for the upgraded Kia Medium Tactical Vehicle (KMTV) was held at Kia's Autoland plant in Gwangju, some 270 kilometers south of Seoul, the company said. Kia has been developing military vehicles since the 1970s, reports Yonhap news agency. The new KMTV, which comes in two variants, is the first model of its kind to be introduced in 48 years, following the previous standard medium tactical vehicle launched in 1977. Following a contract with the South Korean Army in December 2019, Kia carried out prototype development, extensive testing, initial trial production and evaluation before entering full-scale production for the new model. The KMTV features powerful 280-horsepower and 330-horsepower diesel engines for the 2.5-ton and 5-ton variants, respectively, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It also comes with advanced convenience features, such as around-view monitoring, air suspension seats, front and rear cameras, and a built-in navigation system. The updated KMTV offers superior payload capacity and enhanced protection features, increasing its appeal to both domestic and overseas defense markets. Starting this month, Kia will begin delivering the vehicles to the South Korean Army, with plans to expand the supply to global customers. "We will continue to apply innovative technologies to develop special purpose vehicles that support the safe transport of troops and shape the future of military mobility," a company official said. Meanwhile, Kia recently participated in the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2025 in the United Arab Emirates, showcasing its non-passenger military vehicles. The automaker displayed the Kia Medium Tactical Vehicle (KMTV) bonnet-type bare chassis, the Kia Light Tactical Vehicle (KLTV) two-seater cargo, along with the automaker's first passenger pickup truck, the Tasman, at the exhibition, according the company.

Bodies of 3 girls who went missing while fishing found in Missouri River
The bodies of three girls who went missing in the Missouri River have been recovered, Nebraska officials said Wednesday. The three girls, identified by CBS affiliate KMTV as Lah Tray Moo, Lainana Green and Eh Cress Moo, went missing two weeks ago. Eh Cress Moo was Lah Tray Moo's niece, KMTV reported. The girls were reported missing on April 15, while fishing in the river, KMTV said. The Omaha Fire Department said its special operations team had worked alongside local and state agencies, as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to find and identify the girls. Boats, drones, sonar equipment and helicopters were used to search the area, KMTV reported. The search turned into a recovery mission on April 16, KMTV said. The body of Lah Tray Moo was found over the weekend, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, which includes Omaha, said on social media. A fisherman spotted the remains, KMTV reported, and kept them from floating away until police arrived. The bodies of Lainana Green and Eh Cress Moo were found on Tuesday morning, KMTV reported. "We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of these girls," the fire department said in a statement on social media. "The loss of these young lives has touched our entire community, and our hearts continue to be with you now and in the days ahead." Lainana Green's aunt, Nichelle Griffy, told KMTV that the two families are leaning on each other and are "relieved that we have all three girls physically now." The Missouri River is the longest river in the United States. It is usually between 10 and 20 feet deep in Omaha, according to the United States Geological Survey.
