Forest dept launches afforestation drive in Mysuru, plans to plant 3.6L saplings
Mysuru: The forest department has launched a major afforestation drive aiming to plant 3.8 lakh saplings across Mysuru for the year 2025-26. Of these, 2.5 lakh have already been distributed to farmers and organisations, while 1.3 lakh are being planted along roads. The early monsoon has accelerated the initiative. The forest department grew more than 3.8 lakh saplings at its nurseries to distribute to farmers and various organisations, and to plant roadside, to improve forest cover. It grew varieties of fruit-bearing and other saplings under the Rising of Seedlings for Public Distribution (RSPD) scheme in 2025-26 to distribute to the public and farmers at its nurseries. Last year, the department grew 3.6 lakh saplings at its nurseries. It grew native species like neem, peepal, and banyan, which are well-suited for the local environment and wildlife, along with fruit-bearing plants such as mango, jamun, jackfruit, teak, sandalwood, red sanders, mahogany, and silver, among several others. Under the Aranya Krishi Protsaha scheme, the department distributed 1.1 lakh saplings to 720 farmers from all the taluks last year. Registration to avail benefit open This year, the department opened the registration for farmers, allowing them to buy the saplings at no cost after producing photocopies of their Aadhar card, RTC, other land records, and bank account details to the department. The department also provides an incentive of Rs 35 for each sapling of all surviving plants after the first year of plantation, Rs 40 for the second year, and Rs 50 for each plant by conducting on-the-spot inspection and verification under the scheme. A total of Rs 125 will be provided by the department for all surviving plants under the scheme for farmers. This year, the registration to avail the benefit under the scheme is open until the end of Oct. Farmers can plant the saplings on their agricultural fields, bunds, and other places of their interest in their fields. Aranya Krishi Protsaha scheme "Aranya Krishi Protsaha scheme has helped farmers like me with free access to saplings from the forest department. However, I request the department to deposit the incentive amount to my bank account on time for all surviving plants," said K Marigowda from Kaimaballi village in T Narasipura taluk. Deputy conservator of forest (Mysuru), KN Basavaraju said that the department has already started distributing saplings available at its six nurseries, and receiving good response for saplings both from the public and farmers.

DH Impact: MCC removes concrete bases of 108 trees on 8 roads in Mysuru
Mysuru: Mysore City Corporation has cleared concretisation of the bases of 108 trees on a stretch of 11.44km on 8 major roads of Mysuru city after DCF Mysuru territorial division, K N Basavaraju issued directions in this regard following a report in DH. One metre space around tree bases on 1.6 km stretch on Bengaluru-Nilgiri Road – from Five Lights Circle to Fountain Circle as been cleared; 3.09 km stretch of Nelson Mandela Road and Sayyaji Rao Road – from LIC Circle to KR Hospital; 630 metre stretch on Dewans Road; 4.01 km stretch on Vinobha Road; 600 metre stretch on Irwin Road; 170 metre stretch on Bogadi Road; 840 metre stretch from Andolana Circle to Anikethana Road; and 50 metre stretch on Vishwamanava Road in Kuvempu Nagar. MCC Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif informed MNREGA employees stage protest, demand payment of pending 7-month salaries."There were 339 trees on these roads and among them 108 tree bases which were covered, have been cleared," said, MCC Development Commissioner K J Sindhu said. .MCC Commissioner Asif added that they are in the process of attending to the legacy errors to clear all tree bases one by one in the entire city. MCC has even taken permanent steps to prevent concretisation of tree bases in the city in future. MCC has approved a council decision that any person who concretises trees have to deconcritise within months post which they will impose a fine of Rs 2000. It had highlighted judgment of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Sahil Garg Vs State of Punjab that mandates that one-metre radius around the tree base be left un-concretised and filled with soil to facilitate percolation of water to the roots to promote its health and survival. Followed by Report DCF Mysuru territorial division, K N Basavaraju had written a letter to MCC Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif asking him to take measures to de-concretise trees on priority in these eight major roads of the city which they have already surveyed. Meanwhile in a major development, Minister for Environment, Ecology and Forests Eshwar B Khandre has also passed an order on May 22, directing officials to take measures to concretisation of roadside tree bases in all the cities of the State.

Mysuru DC assures swift action to resolve farmers' issues
1 2 3 Mysuru: Deputy commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy on Thursday assured that farmers' issues will be resolved on top priority. Chairing the district-level farmers' grievance redressal meeting held at zilla panchayat hall, the DC instructed the district lead bank to distribute crop loans to farmers without any delay. He also emphasised collecting interest as per Reserve Bank of India guidelines from farmers who borrowed loans after pledging gold ornaments. The nationalised banks must stop collecting hefty interest from farmers on such borrowings, as they pledge such valuables for sowing, purchasing seeds, and other agricultural activities, he stated. He directed the agriculture department officials to ensure distribution of quality seeds and fertilisers. He also instructed them to book cases against agencies and shops found selling spurious seeds and fertilisers to farmers. He further directed the officials to complete the Jal Jeevan Mission works to ensure round-the-clock supply of drinking water to all rural households through tap water connections, without giving any room for complaints of corruption and irregularities. The DC also gave directions to maintain reverse osmosis plants installed across the district to ensure safer drinking water. When members of the state sugarcane growers association demanded the DC to ensure proper functioning of sugar mills in the district, the official said the Srirama Cooperative Sugar Factory of Chunchanakatte in KR Nagar taluk would open this year and start crushing activities this season. Bannari Amman Sugar Limited will start crushing sugarcane from next month, he informed. The farmers' leaders also demanded the DC to initiate measures for the extension of Fasal Bima crop insurance cover to all horticulture crops, clear encroachments of lakes, conduct soil tests in all Krishi Samparka Kendras, among several other demands. Deputy conservator of forests (Mysuru Circle) KN Basavaraju said the forest department also initiated measures for the improvement of planting trees and saplings on roadsides, as well as other afforestation and social forestry activities in the district. Superintendent of police N Vishnuvardhana, zilla panchayat deputy secretaries M Krishnaraju and Savitha, and joint director of agriculture M Ravi were present.
