Temp records tumble in NE as Assam, Arunachal sizzle
1 2 Guwahati: The northeast sizzled on Sunday as Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh and Mazbat in Assam broke their previous maximum temperature recorded in July, while Guwahati equalled its previous highest maximum temperature for the same month. While Itanagar recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degree Celsius, breaking its previous highest maximum temperature of 38.8 degree Celsius recorded on July 19, 2018, Mazbat in lower Assam touched 39.9 degree Celsius, breaking its previous record of 38.4 degree Celsius recorded on July 6, 1984. Under the sweltering July sun, Mazbat on Sunday recorded the northeast's highest maximum temperature, followed by Itanagar. Dibrugarh and North Lakhimpur both recorded 38.5 degree Celsius respectively. Meanwhile, Guwahati touched its previous highest July temperature of 38.4 degree Celsius, which was recorded on July 18, 2017. However, the departure in maximum temperature from normal was highest (7.6 degree Celsius) in Arunachal Pradesh's Passighat. Heavy rain alert for NE in next three days
1 2 Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued an orange alert, which is a warning for the authorities to "be prepared" for disasters, for northeastern states for next three days. Met officials here said a new branch of monsoon spell is simultaneously heading towards Delhi and the northeast as well. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in the northeast in the next three days, warns multi-hazard warning chart of IMD. The media release issued by the IMD on Saturday warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall over northeast during next three days and isolated heavy rainfall thereafter for subsequent four days. "Another new spell of monsoon rain is coming. One branch is going to Delhi, while parallelly coming to northeast India," KN Mohan, head at Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD here told TOI, on Saturday. As per the multi-hazard warning issued by IMD on Saturday, there is orange alert for Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Sunday. For Monday, IMD has issued an orange alert for all seven northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh. As per IMD report, heavy rainfall at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya was recorded in last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Saturday. However, in the corresponding period, Meghalaya and Tripura received normal rainfall, whereas rest of the NE states either received deficient rainfall or large deficient rainfall. IMD stated that light to moderate rainfall at many/most places accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over northeast India during next seven days. Overall, in the month of May, the northeast has experienced good amount of rainfall ranging from normal to large excess rainfall. As per IMD, Assam received 334.7 mm, Arunachal Pradesh (303.3 mm), Tripura (378.7 mm) and Mizoram (289.2 mm) received rainfall in the normal range in May so far, whereas Nagaland received excess rainfall (242.4 mm). Meghalaya (753.1) and Manipur (296.5 mm) received large excess rainfall in May as per IMD records.

Rainfall returns to NE: Relief from heat, showers likely in some parts
Guwahati: The second spell of monsoon rains lashed the northeast and Assam in the last 24 hours, bringing much-needed relief to several areas that had been enduring scorching heat for nearly a week. In Guwahati, where waterlogging was reported in multiple locations, moderate rainfall ranging from 1.1cm to 1.9cm was recorded on Saturday afternoon. "Monsoon clouds have started hovering over NE again and for the next four days Assam and a few neighbouring states are likely to experience a good amount of rainfall. However, it is unlikely to be as intense as the first spell of monsoon rains experienced earlier this month," KN Mohan, head at regional meteorological centre (RMC) of the IMD, told TOI on Saturday. RMC on Saturday warned that heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura in the next 24 hours. However, regions that do not experience rainfall may see no respite from the heat. The Met office cautioned that hot and humid conditions will prevail over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur in the next 24 hours. Heatwave respite hope as NE braces for second spell of rain
Guwahati: The northeast region expects respite from severe heat with a fresh monsoon phase in the next two to three days even as Itanagar and Dibrugarh broke their June temperature records on Thursday. Dibrugarh also set a new June record at 38.7 degrees Celsius. Both cities surpassed their previous highest readings of 39.5 and 38.2 degrees Celsius, respectively, from June 26, 2015. Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh equalled its highest temperature of 38.6 degrees Celsius on Thursday, previously recorded on June 21, 1996. On Thursday, Regional Meteorological Centre chief KN Mohan said, "Now, after intense heat in the last few days, a second spell of monsoon rain can be expected in the next two to three days. There were some hindrances in the flow of the southwest monsoon, but the second spell is most likely to come in two days and continue to cause rain for at least a week." Several localities in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh recorded temperatures exceeding normal ranges by five to eight degrees on Thursday. The World Meteorological Organisation's heat index for Dibrugarh indicated an apparent temperature of roughly 62 degrees Celsius. Itanagar registered the highest temperature in the northeast at 39.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday, with Dibrugarh at 38.7 and Pasighat at 38.6 degrees Celsius. Assam's Jorhat, Mazbat, and North Lakhimpur reached 38.2 degrees Celsius. Pasighat showed the highest variation, exceeding normal by 7.6 degrees Celsius. The IMD announced on Thursday that the northeast would experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph over the next seven days. Heavy rainfall is predicted for Arunachal Pradesh during June 14-18, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura during June 12-18, with very heavy rainfall expected in Arunachal Pradesh on June 18, Assam and Meghalaya during June 16-18, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on June 17 and 18. The IMD indicated that maximum temperatures would remain 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal across the northeast on Friday, with no significant changes expected.

Maximum temp in city touches 37C as rain subsides & cloud cover clears out
Guwahati: As rain subsided in the northeast, the lack of cloud cover pushed the maximum temperature five degrees Celsius above the normal range in several towns and cities in the last couple of days. Guwahati's maximum temperature on Monday was 37 degrees Celsius, one of the highest in the northeast for the day. The departure above normal for Guwahati was 4.5 degrees Celsius. Commuters said the rise in maximum temperature felt unusually high. Dibrugarh, North Lakhimpur and Tezpur in Assam and Passighat in Arunachal Pradesh recorded the highest departures in maximum temperatures for the day, and this trend has been continuing for at least the last couple of days. Tezpur and North Lakhimpur on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam recorded the highest departures at 5.5 degrees Celsius and 5.2 degrees Celsius, respectively. Passighat in Arunachal recorded a departure of 5 degrees Celsius on Monday. Most of the towns and cities in the northeast experienced a two to three degree Celsius rise in temperature above the normal range on Monday. Earlier, the India Meteorological Department had predicted a similar trend. A departure by 4.7 degrees Celsius in Dibrugarh, 4.1 degrees Celsius in Jorhat and 3.9 degrees Celsius in Agartala resulted in discomfort. "It seems that the temperature rise is a clear impact of climate change. Construction has gained pace everywhere, and trees are being cut for development, resulting in this discomfort," said Niki Talukdar, a Guwahati student. KN Mohan, head of the regional meteorological centre of IMD, said the simultaneous rise in maximum temperature and humidity has resulted in these conditions. "Temperatures during the day feel higher due to the hot and humid conditions. Relative humidity is above 70 in various parts of the northeast, and this has resulted in discomfort," he added. He said there is not enough moisture and wind for the formation of clouds over the northeast. This has left the region without a cloud cover, resulting in direct sunlight heating the surface. However, Mohan added that the maximum temperature has not yet touched previous record highs for June. Cities like Guwahati, Silchar and Dibrugarh are still below the highest maximum June temperature recorded ever, he added. On Monday, Guwahati's maximum temperature was 37 degrees Celsius, whereas Silchar and Dibrugarh's corresponding figures were 35.7 and 36.2 degrees Celsius. For June, Guwahati's highest maximum temperature was 39 degrees Celsius, recorded on June 13, 2019, whereas the corresponding figures for Silchar and Dibrugarh were 39.2 (recorded on June 29, 2021) and 38.2 (recorded on June 26, 2015).
