Ahead of 2026 TN elections, MLA Kathiravan spices up ticket bid with outreach meet, hot biriyani

TIRUCHY: With Assembly elections less than a year away, Manachanallur MLA S Kathiravan has launched a campaign titled 'Makkaludan Manachanallur Kathiravan' — notably on the same day the state government inaugurated its 'Ungaludan Stalin' outreach. The campaign was flagged off by Municipal Administration Minister and DMK principal secretary K N Nehru. Framed as a grievance redressal drive, Kathiravan's initiative will see him meet residents across all 63 panchayats in his constituency over the coming months. Every evening, around 6 pm, party functionaries assemble people in a common place, where they air their issues to the MLA. Most of their questions are regarding the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai, MGNREGS job cards, house patta, etc. The MLA listens to them, promises follow-up. The meetings invariably end with a serving of piping hot biriyani. The pattern is the same in every meeting.

Panjappur terminus goes live, mofussil and intra-city buses to run from facility

TIRUCHY: With the flagging off of the first set of buses by Minister for Municipal Administration KN Nehru, operations commenced at the Rs 492.55-crore Muthamizh Arignar Dr Kalaignar Karunanidhi Integrated Bus Terminus at Panjappur on Wednesday. All long-distance buses plying across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states as well as intra-city buses will now be operated through the terminus. Addressing media persons after the launch of operations at the terminus that was inaugurated by the chief minister on May 9, Nehru said, "We are still in the process of finalising the annual maintenance contract." The terminus, however, has been equipped with all essential passenger amenities, and no additional user fee will be charged. Until permanent shops are established, passengers can buy food and beverages from kiosks, the minister added. While the terminus's fully air-conditioned ground floor is designated for mofussil (inter-district) bus operations, city buses will be operated from the first floor, which is not air-conditioned. According to a district administration release on Wednesday, TNSTC has deployed city buses from the new terminus on key urban routes including Central Bus Stand, Chathiram Bus Stand, Srirangam and Thiruverumbur. To meet early-morning commuter demand, 196 additional bus trips will be operated between 3 am and 10 am. Suburban and long-distance services operated by TNSTC, SETC and private operators will also use the facility. To ensure smooth operations, TNSTC has posted staff in rotation to provide round-the-clock support.

Most buses to shift operations to Panjapur IBT from July 16

Trichy: Two months after the inauguration of the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur by chief minister M K Stalin on May 9, both mofussil and city buses will finally commence operations from the new facility on July 16 (Wednesday). Built at a cost of ₹246.1 crore, the terminus will replace the Central bus terminus as the originating and terminating point for most intrastate buses. Both TNSTC and private bus operators have confirmed their readiness to shift operations, barring a few destinations. Fares may marginally increase as the IBT is located 7 km from the Central bus terminus. "There was a delay in approving the annual maintenance contract (AMC) for the new terminus. In less than 10 days, it will function at full scale," minister K N Nehru said on Sunday. He added that a police station and TNSTC facilities, including a bus maintenance yard, will be developed at Panjapur in due course. Trichy Corporation officials said shops inside the IBT will become operational in phases. However, essential amenities such as beverage stalls, drinking water facilities, and public toilets will be available from day one. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esse novo alarme com câmera é quase gratuito em Santana Do Paraíso (consulte o preço) Alarmes Undo While all mofussil buses currently operating from the Central terminus will shift to Panjapur, a decision on Karur-bound buses remains pending. Operators cite increased travel time, as the IBT is situated on the opposite end of their route. "Private buses may revise fares only to reflect the additional distance covered, not as a general fare hike. Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Thuraiyur-bound buses will continue from Chathiram bus stand," said R Dharmarajan, secretary, Federation of Bus Operators Association of Tamil Nadu. Buses heading to Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Namakkal, Salem, and Madurai will operate from Panjapur, likely using highways to bypass core city areas. Dindigul-bound buses may still access certain central areas like the district collectorate. "TNSTC is ready to shift operations. Any fare adjustment reflecting the additional distance will be finalised on the first day. The operational plan will be confirmed within two days," a TNSTC official said. Trichy Corporation added that the contractor managing IBT will also handle shop rentals, cleaning, and parking. "Preparations for launching shops inside IBT are underway. A restaurant operator has been allotted space. We will ensure the transition proceeds smoothly," an official said.

Waste to electricity plant may come up at dump yard

Trichy: The govt has initiated preliminary work to expand waste-to-electricity plants to major cities in the state including Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy, said municipal administration minister K N Nehru on Sunday. In Trichy, it will be considered at Ariyamangalam dump yard. He said the govt is exploring an option to retrieve plastic waste from dump yards and utilize it in road construction. "Waste mounds in dump yards in major cities that have accumulated for over five decades are being cleared using a biomining method. The waste-to-electricity plant introduced in Chennai will be expanded to other cities as a long-term solution in another 3-4 years," Nehru told reporters on the sidelines of Oraniyil Tamil Nadu campaign held in E Pudur to add new members to DMK. He said no new infrastructure projects are viable in the 47-acre Ariyamangalam dump yard for the next 15 years except for public parks since the subsurface has accumulated plastic waste for decades. Responding to a question about his constituency, Trichy West, cornering a lion's share of new projects, Nehru said all 65 wards in the city are treated equally. On opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami's remarks about Rs 1,000 monthly assistance provided to women in the state, Nehru said, "We (DMK) introduced the scheme to provide financial assistance to women heads of the family. Who is he (Palaniswami) to say that people will not get the assistance? We will conduct more camps to continue and expand the coverage. "
