New Kahnawake summit targets emerging artists
Some of the biggest names in the Kahnawake arts scene assembled alongside up-and-comers over the weekend to exchange tips and ideas at the first annual Kahnawake Artists' Summit. 'I think having these summits is crucial to the development of the artistic community in Kahnawake,' said sculptor MC Snow, who took part in an artists' panel at the April 26 event at the United Church Hall. The summit was put on by the Kanien'kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center (KOR). Snow remembers how valuable guidance from established artists and curators was when he was getting his start, especially as he explored opportunities outside of the community. 'Without knowing any of those people, it would have been really difficult to get ahead in the art world. I'm always really thankful to them for introducing me around to be able to get my foot in the door. 'Now that I'm in a position of being able to do the same for other artists, that's what I feel compelled to do,' said Snow, who has four decades of experience in the arts. 'We have to be supportive of one another, because there's really nobody else to depend on,' he said. In addition to the artists' panel, there was an Arts and Archives presentation from the KOR, an authenticity presentation from Owisokon Lahache, and workshops on marketing as an artist from YES Montreal, not to mention breakfast, lunch, and a mocktail hour. 'It was great,' said organizer Scott Berwick, manager of KOR's Arts and Archives department. He was pleased with the turnout, noting 25 people turned up. 'Lots of great conversation and shared knowledge,' he said. 'It was a good first summit for artists, and I look forward to doing next year's.' Kahnawa'kehró:non photographer Martin Akwiranoron Loft, whose street photography is featured in an exhibition that recently opened at the McCord Museum in Montreal, came out for part of the day. 'I wanted to support fellow community artists and to hear about all the good work they are doing,' he said. 'Through the years, I've recognized the fact that it's always good to organize and push for the recognition of art and culture. It's important because it's a part of our story, our culture.' He appreciated the diversity of arts that were represented at the event, including beadwork, sculpture, photography, and several other art forms. 'It was long overdue and a welcome development in the community,' he said. 'I think that art and culture make a place, any place, interesting.' Although it was the first ever Artists' Summit, Snow noted how long the KOR has been creating opportunities for local artists, noting his own first shows in Kahnawake were through the organization. 'The cultural centre has always been so great with promoting artists. I think now one of the good things is that a lot of our artists are starting to get shows across Canada,' Snow said. He recommended that aspiring artists in Kahnawake get out there and interact with other artists when opportunities to do so arise. 'You have to not be afraid to put yourself out there and meet other people,' Snow said. 'Stay open to communicate with other local artists. Go to the events, be present at the events, so people see your face. We have to know each other in order to help each other.' marcus@ Marcus Bankuti, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

Johnson & Johnson Stops Late-Stage Depression Study Over 'Insufficient Efficacy'
On Friday, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) decided to discontinue the Phase 3 VENTURA development program evaluating aticaprant, a kappa opioid receptor (KOR) antagonist, as an adjunctive treatment for major depressive disorder (aMDD). The move follows insufficient efficacy in the target patient population. The data confirmed aticaprant is safe and well-tolerated, and no new safety signals were identified. The company will explore future development opportunities for aticaprant. Full analyses from the VENTURA development program are underway and will be shared at a future medical meeting. In January, Neumora Therapeutics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:NMRA) released data from the Phase 3 KOASTAL-1 Study of navacaprant for major depressive disorder. The study did not demonstrate a statistically significant improvement on the primary endpoint of change from baseline in the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) total score at Week 6 or the key secondary endpoint of a change from baseline in the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) scale. Navacaprant, like aticaprant, is a kappa opioid receptor antagonist. Johnson & Johnson says it continues to build on its leadership in Neuroscience. In January, the healthcare giant agreed to acquire Intra-Cellular Therapies Inc. (NASDAQ:ITCI) for $132.00 per share in cash for a total equity value of approximately $14.6 billion. Johnson & Johnson's other depression drug Spravato (esketamine), in January, received FDA approval as the only monotherapy for adults living with major depressive disorder who have had an inadequate response to at least two oral antidepressants. In 2024, Spravato generated global sales of around $1.01 billion. In May 2024, Johnson & Johnson topline results from Phase 3 MDD3001 clinical trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of seltorexant as an adjunctive treatment to baseline antidepressants in adult and elderly patients with major depressive disorder with insomnia symptoms. The study achieved all primary and secondary endpoints, with seltorexant demonstrating both a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in depressive symptoms and improved sleep disturbance outcomes in patients who had a prior inadequate response to SSRI/SNRI antidepressants alone. Knights of Rizal Bahrain Chapter launches ‘Adopt a School Program;' strengthens commitment to Filipino education
The Knights of Rizal (KOR) Bahrain Chapter formally launched its pilot project, the 'Adopt a School Program,' aiming to deliver educational opportunities and demonstrate unity and solidarity in the pursuit of education. The event took place on February 21, 2025, marking a significant achievement for both the organization and the Philippine community in Bahrain. The Philippine Embassy in Manama was represented at this significant event by Consul Bryan Jess T. Baguio, who attended and showed his support for the initiative. In his speech, Consul Baguio reinforced the mission of the Knights of Rizal and the significance of their commitment to enhancing educational visions. Various organizations and the presence of numerous community members and distinguished guests further illustrated a collective effort to support the recipient of this program, the Palaui Integrated School situated at San Vicente, Sta. Ana, Cagayan Valley. A remote and underserved community, Palaui Integrated School will greatly receive the gracious deed of the KOR Bahrain Chapter. This school faces unique challenges and the program aims to provide much-needed resources and support to improve the learning environment for its students. The KOR continues to uphold education as the foundation of progress—a belief recently reinforced by Eduardo Ona Hernandez, KOR Chapter Commander, who emphasized the organization's dedication to empowering the youth through knowledge. Mr. Hernandez highlighted that the KOR sees themselves as modern Rizalians, tasked with carrying on Dr. José Rizal's legacy in contemporary society. This commitment means actively working to ensure that young people have access to quality education and opportunities for personal and intellectual growth. Speaking with palpable passion, Henry Berbano, the KOR Project Chairman, shared fervently, 'When we learned of Palaui Integrated School's story, we saw not just a school in need but a community yearning for opportunity.' The Knights of Rizal Bahrain Chapter has embraced this cause, committing to provide solar panels, desktop computers, laptops, printers, LED televisions, and educational materials on the life and works of Dr. Rizal. Furthermore, Mr. Berbano underscored the potential of the program to change lives, stressing that the assistance to be given will empower the students and uplift the whole community. The KOR is committed to providing these young learners with the learning tools necessary to succeed and aim higher. Dr. Elpidio Quitevis, Knight Commander of Rizal (KCR) and Regional Commander for the Middle East and African Region, emphasized teamwork and collective responsibility. He extended his warmest congratulations to all those involved, from the project's conception to its successful execution. He commended the initiative, teamwork, and dedication of every member who contributed to the project's rollout. A ceremonial lighting of the Adopt A School Project logo signaling the official launching of the project was led by Consul Baguio assisted by Eduardo Hernandez, Henry Berbanom Paul Barrios. Lito Bugarin and Dr. Elpidio Quitevis. In addition to the presentation and speech, the evening was also filled with energetic dance and singing performances to connect on a casual level among the attendees. A raffle draw offering participants an opportunity to win prizes of different forms was included in the program. It is a strong proof of human solidarity of the people to be together with a unified task, positively impacting other people's lives as shown with the attendance of different organizations represented by their leaders from Las Damas de Rizal, Filipino Club Bahrain, Pinay Ikaw Na, Alwali Training and Development Center (ATDC) and Filipino Writers' Circle (Filwrite). Other personalities who showed support included Capt, Noel Escalona, Armed Forces of the Philippines Senior National Representative to the Combined Maritime Forces (AFPSNR to CMF); Dr. Zane Thirwall, KOR RC Emeritus and the generous sponsors of the event. Apart from actively heading official and diplomatic ceremonies marking significant dates in the life of Dr. José Rizal as well as in Philippine Independence Day, the Knights of Rizal also engage in youth empowerment programs, the promotion of Filipino culture and outreach community programs.
