Beloved CA cafe owner with ‘kind soul' shot dead at Nevada casino, friends say

A Southern California restaurateur described by friends as a 'kind soul' is among three people killed in a shooting outside a Reno casino, Nevada police reported. Andrew Canepa, 33, died in a shooting spree Monday, July 28, at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, along with two others, Sparks police said in a news release. Four others were injured, including the accused gunman, police said. Canepa co-owned the Side Street Café in Newbury Park near Los Angeles, KABC reported. 'Andrew was a kind soul, a dedicated business owner, and a loving father to his young son,' wrote Andrew Gorell, a Ventura County supervisor, on X, formerly known as Twitter. Canepa, who had a 6-year-old son, was remembered for his welcoming presence at the café, a popular breakfast spot, KTLA said. 'He would sit down with people at the booth, share with them and make them feel at home,' friend Rick Bucaria told the station. 'Andrew was so warm and welcoming. He was always so happy.' 'He probably greeted and waited on almost everybody in this city,' friend Israel Rodriguez told KTLA. Canepa and a friend, Justin Aguila, 33, of Southern California, were in the Reno area for a bachelor party, police said in the release. They were shot in the back and killed while waiting outside the casino for a ride to the airport, police said. Angel Martinez, 66, of Reno, also died when he was shot while driving through the parking lot, police said. Two others are hospitalized but expected to recover, and one person was treated and released, police said in an earlier news release. Dakota Hawver, 26, of Reno, hospitalized in critical condition after being shot by an officer, is accused of firing more than 80 rounds from a 9mm pistol in the incident, police said. Authorities in Sparks, just outside Reno, are leading the investigation because it involves a police shooting, the release said. Investigators have not found a connection between Hawver and any of the victims or the casino, police said. Police ask anyone with information to call 775-353-2231. Newbury Park is about a 45-mile drive northwest from downtown Los Angeles.

Gilbert Arenas, former NBA star, arrested, tied to illegal gambling business

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas has been arrested, along with several other people, in connection with an alleged illegal gambling business he is accused of hosting. A federal indictment on Wednesday claims the operation included high-stakes poker games held at a mansion in Encino, Calif., that was owned by Arenas. The 43-year-old 'Agent Zero,' of Woodland Hills, is charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating an illegal gambling business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators,' the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a release. 'At Arenas' direction, Arthur Kats, 51, of West Hollywood, staged the mansion to host the games, found co-conspirators to host the games, and collected rent from the co-conspirators on Arenas' behalf,' the office explained. Also charged in the indictment and arrested in connection with the illegal gambling business charges are: Yevgeni Gershman, 49, a.k.a. 'Giora,' of Woodland Hills; a suspected organized crime figure from Israel Evgenni Tourevski, 48, a.k.a. 'Eugene,' of Tarzana Allan Austria, 52, a.k.a. 'Elica,' of West Hills Yarin Cohen, 27, a.k.a. 'YC,' of Tarzana Ievgen Krachun, 43, of Tarzana Gershman, Tourevski, Austria, and Cohen are accused of managing illegal 'Pot Limit Omaha' poker games, among other illegal games, at the Encino mansion and 'collected a 'rake' – a fee the house charged from each pot either as a percentage or a fixed amount per hand – and invited players to compete.' Gershman is also accused of hiring young women to serve drinks, give massages and 'companionship to the poker players' in exchange for tips. However, they were charged a 'tax' for working the games. Chefs, valets, and armed security guards were also hired for the games. Krachun is accused of working as a 'chip runner,' according to the release. 'He's accused of tracking players' wins and losses, distributing poker chips to players and paid employees.' 'Each of these defendants is charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business and one count of operating an illegal gambling business,' the release continued. If convicted, they would face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count. Gershman is an Israeli citizen. He and Valentina Cojocari, 35, of Woodland Hills, are charged with three additional counts: conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, marriage fraud, and making a false statement on an immigration document. 'In early 2022, Gershman conspired with Cojocari to enter into a sham marriage for the purposes of obtaining permanent legal status in the United States and lied to immigration authorities to procure legal status for Gershman, who provided financial support to Cojocari in exchange for her participation in the sham marriage,' the USAO said. 'Both Gershman and Cojocari submitted false information on their U.S. immigration forms, including Gershman's answers of 'no' as to whether he had ever been detained by any law enforcement official and as to whether he intended to engage in illegal gambling or any other form of commercialized vice. Homeland Security Investigations' Northridge Office, the Los Angeles Police Department's Major Crimes Division – Transnational Organized Crime Section, and IRS Criminal Investigation are investigating the case. All of the defendants, including Arenas, are set to appear in court for their arraignments on Wednesday afternoon in the United States District Court in Los Angeles.

Ex-Netflix employee sues streaming giant claiming she was fired after filing discrimination complaints

A former labor relations lawyer at Netflix has sued the streaming giant and two executives, claiming they discriminated against her and other employees and retaliated against her after she filed harassment complaints, leading to her wrongful termination. Nhu-Y Phan, who worked at Netflix from May 2021 until her termination in September 2024, states that she and others experienced a hostile work environment while working under senior labor relations lawyer Ted Sinclair and Director of Labor Relations Jonah Cozien. In her lawsuit, Phan, who is Asian American, alleges she and colleagues who are women of color experienced gender and racial discrimination under Sinclair by being consistently passed over for opportunities they were qualified for and left out of meetings. Phan also alleges that Cozien sexually harassed her colleague, according to the lawsuit obtained by KTLA. After Phan filed complaints against Sinclair and Cozien, she alleges the two retaliated against her by writing unusual negative performance reports, which ultimately led to her termination. A spokesperson for Netflix said in a statement, 'These claims lack merit and we intend to defend this matter vigorously.' The Independent has reached out to Sinclair and Cozien for comment. 'Ms. Phan has been devastated both economically and emotionally by her wrongful discharge,' attorneys for Phan wrote in the complaint, filed in the California Superior Court in Los Angeles on July 21. 'Once a highly compensated professional with a sterling reputation, Ms. Phan faces an uphill battle finding comparable employment. The stress and humiliation of her termination, loss of income, and damaged reputation have been profound,' the complaint says. In her lawsuit, Phan says there was a clear change in the way she was treated after she filed the discrimination and sexual harassment complaints against her supervisors. The lawsuit states that Phan was well-paid and received glowing reviews. In her first few months working at the streaming giant, she received a $50k raise and was the lead labor relations person on multiple projects. In her role, Phan became the go-to person for production and business affairs when people were seeking labor advice, such as payment for directors, performers, and below-the-line crew. However, Phan says Sinclair, her then supervisor, began excluding Phan and other women of color from professional opportunities and giving those to other white employees who were less qualified. Phan alleges that at one point, Sinclair excluded her from negotiations between Netflix and the Directors Guild of America, despite Phan having previously worked under multiple executives at the DGA. In her lawsuit, Phan says she raised at least eight verbal or written complaints about Sinclair. Eventually, she moved under Cozien's supervision. But Phan states she later reported Cozien for allegedly sexually harassing her female colleague, after the colleague informed Phan that Cozien had been making her 'uncomfortable' by consistently asking her to get lunch, dinner, and after-work drinks – sometimes outside of work hours, such as when Cozien was on vacation with his family. Phan alleged Cozien then became 'hostile' toward her and revoked opportunities. Her lawsuit states that Cozien 'conspired' with Sinclair to have her fired, in part by writing a critical performance report. Phan is requesting a jury trial and asking for an unknown amount in damages from Netflix, Sinclair, Cozien, and other unnamed Netflix employees. 'Netflix is a corporate bully that will do anything to avoid responsibility for its actions,' said Brian Olney, an attorney at Hadsell, Stormer, Renick, and Dai LLP representing Phan, in a statement obtained by KTLA. The Independent has reached out to HSRD LLP for comment. The law firm told KTLA that 'Netflix repeatedly tried to silence Ms. Phan, first by firing her and then by suing her' by filing a lawsuit against her to compel arbitration. 'Nhu Phan had the courage to blow the whistle about Netflix executives who are discriminating against women of color and sexually harassing a female employee,' Olney said.

Fiery street racing crash on 110 Freeway in South L.A. caught on video

Two suspected street racers caused a fiery crash on the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles early Sunday morning, sending four vehicles careening across all northbound lanes. The chaos — caught on dramatic video — unfolded around 2:30 a.m. near Florence Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP officials said the incident involved two separate collisions and is being investigated as a hit-and-run. Footage obtained by KTLA shows a white and a black sedan weaving dangerously between vehicles, appearing to race while recklessly cutting off other drivers. At the start of the video, the white car leads, with the black car close behind. As the white car swerves around an uninvolved driver, the black car attempts to follow — but fails destructively. The black sedan then cuts across three lanes and, instead of squeezing in between and beyond the two cars on either side, slams into the bystander on the right, triggering a violent chain reaction. The first car struck spins out, sending sparks flying across the freeway before slamming into a guardrail. On its way, it hits another car, which then shoots down the Gage Avenue exit at high speed. The force of the initial impact also sends the suspect vehicle ricocheting into another car on its left. That vehicle is pushed across five lanes before it appears to regain control near the center median. CHP and Los Angeles Fire Department crews arrived shortly after, shutting down all northbound lanes to assess damage and check for injuries. LAFD confirmed no one was transported from the scene. It remains unclear whether any arrests were made, but news stringer service reports that the black sedan and three other badly damaged vehicles were towed from the scene. The white sedan believed to be involved reportedly fled without stopping. Luis Zuniga contributed to this report. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Riders dangle in midair after spinning ride stalls at California amusement park

A ride malfunction left Knott's Berry Farm visitors briefly dangling in midair on a spinning ride at the California amusement park, news outlets reported. A video shows about 20 riders hanging sideways on the stopped Sol Spin ride Saturday, July 26, KTLA reported. Some of the riders are heard screaming in the video, KABC reported. Officials at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park told McClatchy News in a statement that the ride was stopped for about five minutes. The ride reopened after a full safety inspection. 'The safety of our guests is a top priority,' the park said. 'Today the ride did not complete a full cycle as a safety precaution.' Sol Spin sends riders six stories in the air on one of six spinning arms, Knott's Berry Farm said. In November, 22 people were stranded in midair on the ride for about three hours, KTLA said. Buena Park is about a 20-mile drive southeast from downtown Los Angeles.
