Students who did well in SSLC, PU felicitated

Urging students to set clear goals and work hard to achieve success, Police Commissioner Sharnappa S. Dhage has said that they can reach their goals in life if they have determination, perseverance and strong willpower. He was addressing a gathering during the Pratibha Puraskar award ceremony to felicitate children of journalists who have scored high marks in SSLC and PU exams here recently. Dr. Dhage said that students should swim against the tide, overcome odds and manage to excel in their studies despite all adversities. 'Life is a journey encompassing both joy and sorrow, good times and hardship. It is essential to approach all seasons with courage and resilience, as challenges are inevitable and, at the same time, they can lead to growth,' he said. The officer also advised parents to avoid pressuring students to solely focus on securing high marks. Instead, they should prioritize a supportive and encouraging environment, Dr. Dhage added. Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) national president B.V. Mallikarjunaiah, Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) State president Shivanand Tagadur, KUWJ State vice-president Bhavani Singh Thakur, State secretary J.C. Heart attacks are not caused by COVID-19 vaccine, avoid unnecessary fear: Minister

Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil has said that there is no evidence to back the claim that COVID-19 vaccine causes sudden cardiac deaths and urged people not to panic over the recent reports of deaths due to cardiac arrest. He was addressing media persons after inaugurating a free heart check-up camp for journalists in Kalaburagi organised by the district unit of Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) in association with Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (SJICSR) here on Wednesday. Dr. Patil reiterated that a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research has confirmed that there is no link between increasing sudden deaths in young adults with the vaccine. Even the expert committee set up by the State government to study the exact cause of increasing cardiac-related deaths has found no link with vaccination. Dr. Patil suggested that journalists, due to the high-stress nature of their profession, should prioritize regular cardiac check-ups. He also advised journalists to adopt a healthy lifestyle by following a balanced diet, regular exercise and mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation, while avoiding tobacco, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Cardiologist in the Kalaburagi branch of Jayadeva Hospital Veeresh Patil Hebbal said that maintaining a healthy heart is crucial for the overall well-being of individual and longevity. He clarified that not all heart-related chest pain is due to blockages in the arteries. KUWJ district president Baburao Yadrami thanked the Minister for taking the initiative to organise a cardiac check-up camp for journalists. Nearly 600 media persons including office staff of both print and electronic media, are expected to benefit from the camp at Jayadeva Hospital. The camp will be conducted on Saturdays and Sundays for the next six weeks with 50 OPD slots every day.

Mediapersons facing challenging times: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

KOCHI: Mediapersons working in visual and print media are facing multiple challenges with the development of information technology and the spread of social media, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Kochi on Saturday. Though they are called the protectors of democracy, mediapersons are facing challenges in their work sphere, he said while inaugurating the Journalist Welfare Fund organised by Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) in Kochi. 'As India's ranking in the World Press Freedom Index declines, there has been a decline in the rights of journalists. The anti-labour policies of the Union government add to the crisis. The government is trying to merge the Working Journalist Act with the labour code. Concerns have been raised about the fate of the Wage Board formed to ensure better remuneration for journalists,' said Pinarayi Vijayan. Congratulating the KUWJ for launching its own Welfare Fund, he termed it as the right move for survival in challenging times. The decision to support the families of journalists during difficult times reflects the compassion and care towards colleagues. Assuring that there are no insolvable issues between the government and journalists, the chief minister said the problems regarding the Journalist Pension Scheme can be solved through discussions. He also congratulated the KUWJ for launching Breaking D, a campaign against drug menace. Inaugurating Breaking D, the anti-drug campaign launched by the KUWJ, Opposition leader V D Satheesan said while the government agencies focus on enforcement, it is the duty of society to create awareness about the menace. He termed the Journalist Welfare Fund as a model that can be replicated by other organisations. It reflects the compassion and empathy of journalists towards their fellowmen, said Satheesan.

Banu Mushtaq's ‘Heart Lamp' to be translated into 47 languages

BENGALURU: The anthology of short stories, 'Heart Lamp', which won the International Booker Prize, will be translated into 35 global languages and 12 Indian languages, said author Banu Mushtaq at a felicitation organised by the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), Bahuroopi Publications and Gandhi Foundation, here on Wednesday. She said the stories will be made into movies, for which the rights have been acquired. 'So much material is within us and this has to be made familiar to others. We have read their stories and novels and we practised their way of life for so long. But now, there is a need to familiarise them with our way of life, our ideologies and our characters and situations,' she added. Congratulating her, KV Prabhakar, media advisor to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said, 'At a time when disruptive forces, fanaticism and fundamentalism are destroying the world, I appreciate that the Booker International Prize has been awarded to Banu Mushtaq for her fusion of humanity and Indianness.' KUWJ president Shivanand Tagadur said, 'The award brings a lot of pride to Kannada and to us as she was first a journalist and later became a lawyer, an activist and everything that she is today. I feel that being a journalist for a decade fuelled her power and courage.' Writer, lawyer and activist Banu Mushtaq scripted history by becoming the first Kannada author to win the International Booker Prize with her anthology Heart Lamp. This is also the first time that a short story collection has won the prestigious prize.
