Honor of Kings World Cup set to kick off in Riyadh with $3m prize pool

The KWC is debuting in the Middle East for the first time, signaling the Gulf's rising influence in global esports. Honor of Kings has unveiled the full schedule and details for the Honor of Kings World Cup (KWC), which will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, starting July 15 as part of the Esports World Cup 2025. The global tournament will gather elite teams from around the world to battle for a prize pool of $3m. This year's edition of the KWC introduces notable changes, including the participation of two invited teams from China's King Pro League (KPL), the KPL Spring Season champion and the Asian Champions League (ACL) winner, promising high-level competition and more exciting matchups on the international stage. A key feature returning for the KWC is the Global Ban&Pick system, which was introduced earlier this year to add a new layer of strategy to team drafting. The format has already delivered dramatic results across regional leagues, including Game 7 thrillers and surprise victories from underdog teams. The competition opens with the Group Stage from July 15 to 19, where 16 teams will be split into four groups of four. Teams will compete in a double-elimination format with best-of-three (Bo3) matches. Group winners will advance to the 'Group Kings' stage, while runners-up head to the 'Last Chance' round. On July 20, the Last Chance stage will see second-place teams from the group phase face off in two best-of-five (Bo5) matches: A2 vs B2 and C2 vs D2. Winners of these matches will secure the final spots in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Group Kings stage will pit group winners against each other in Bo3 matches: A1 vs B1 and C1 vs D1. Victors will enter the playoffs as Pool 1 seeds, while the losers join Pool 2 alongside the Last Chance winners. The Playoffs will run from July 23 to 26 in a single-elimination bracket format, featuring the top eight teams, six qualifiers from the earlier rounds plus the two directly seeded KPL teams, and TT Global. The tournament culminates in the Grand Finals on July 26, played in a best-of-seven format using the high-stakes 'Ultimate Battle' draft mode. To mark the occasion, Honor of Kings is also launching a range of in-game events. From June 24 through August 28, players can access the first esports-themed Honor Pass for free. By completing missions, players level up to earn rewards, including the Nuwa–Syzygy Moonlight skin at Level 1 and the exclusive Alessio KWC skin at Level 80. Fans can also participate in team support votes and prediction quizzes tied to match outcomes.

Alberta karaoke bar provides community as well as a stage

The winner of the KWC Global Karaoke contest in Thorsby will have the chance to sing on a global stage. CTV News Edmonton's Connor Hogg has the story. Like many small towns, the hotel that serves also as a bar and restaurant in Thorsby, Alta., is the most happening place Friday nights. Located on a main street corner, the hotel boasts live local music every week — karaoke, that is. Thorsby Hotel Bar and Grill The Thorsby Hotel Bar and Grill is seen in this June 29, 2025, picture. (Connor Hogg/ CTV News Edmonton) The singers put on their best show last Sunday for a chance to participate in the 2025 Karaoke World Championships (KWC) finals in Bangkok, Thailand, in November. 'It can be a little intimidating once you get into the further parts of the competition, but honestly, it's actually one of the best things I've ever done,' contestant Pandora Aurora Knight told CTV News Edmonton. 'I've grown so much and gotten so many good people in my life as a result.... It gives me that sense of community, of a place where I fit.' Knight didn't exactly willingly begin karaoke 10 years ago. But the push was enlightening. 'I've discovered a passion for music and singing that I didn't really realize I had, and it's become very much a focal point in my life.' They all credited the judges' feedback for improvements in their performance and lauded competition as a confidence booster. But largely, they touted karaoke for its other benefits. 'It's kind of a release of endorphins,' Laura Mae Cartledge said. 'I like to bottle them up and try not to let my emotions show too much. And then (through) music, I can express them a bit more.' Alex Schwarzer added, 'I was a singer when I was in grade school, and I knew I had a little bit of talent, but I didn't know how much talent.... You get the applause, there's some sort of validation there saying, 'Yeah, you're as good as you think you are.'' Whether it's in Thorsby – a community of 1,000 about 70 kilometres southwest of Edmonton – or their own home cities, some singers on Sunday said they do karaoke multiple nights a week. We like to look out for what songs fit our vocal range, what we can kind of adapt and work with each other to get better,' Cartledge said of her 'KWC family.' The group gathers not just for karaoke, but holidays and other occasions, too. 'I moved a couple months ago and we put up a little post on our community wall. I had like 11 people show up to help me.... We are there for each other,' Knight told CTV News Edmonton. 'That's more important than anything — knowing where you belong or where you can fit in. Everyone needs that. Everyone longs for that.' With files from CTV News Edmonton's Connor Hogg

Draw could make or break Nova's World Cup run

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly crowned Malaysia Honour of Kings (HoK) Spring League (MKL) champions Nova Esports are hoping for a favourable draw at the HoK World Cup (KWC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, next month. Nova, together with reigning world champions Black Shrew Esports (BSE) and All Gamers Global (AG Global), have qualified for KWC by finishing in the top three during the MKL. Nova won the Season 3 Invitational in Manila, in March and have been in strong form this season. They carried that momentum into MKL, finishing second behind BSE in the regular season before going unbeaten in the playoffs. Nova edged BSE 4-3 in a thrilling Grand Final on Sunday (June 8) to clinch the title. Nova's manager, Noel Leng, said avoiding teams from China, who are the powerhouse nation in the esport, would give them a better chance of going deep at KWC. KWC is part of the Esports World Cup. "It depends on the luck of the draw in Riyadh," she said yesterday (June 8). "For us, we hope not to face Chinese teams early on. That said, we will prepare thoroughly to face any opponent at the KWC." In the MKL Grand Final, Nova trailed 3-2 after five games with BSE needing just one more win to secure the inaugural league title. However, Nova dug deep to win the sixth game, forcing a deciding Game Seven, which they went on to win, lifting the trophy and pocketing US$15,100 (RM63,948.50). Noel added that the team anticipated a tough and drawn-out encounter, especially after their earlier victory over BSE in the upper bracket semi-finals. "We beat them 3-0 in the upper bracket semis, and we knew they would analyse that loss to try and counter us," said Noel. "They also defeated AG Global 3-1 in the lower bracket final before facing us again, so they came in with strong momentum. "We knew that if we could push the series to a seventh game, we would come out on top as we've never lost a Game Seven before." Nova will now take a short break before resuming preparations for the KWC. A training boot camp in China is being planned before the team travels to the Middle East.

Isle of Man private school receives £2.2m 'repayable grant'

The Isle of Man's only private school will receive £2.2m to help with construction costs as it brings together its primary and secondary school facilities on one William's College (KWC) has been awarded the "repayable grant" under the Department for Enterprise's Financial Assistance Scheme for island year the institution confirmed its campus would be consolidated to include its primary school, the Buchan, with its former site sold to developers in Minister Tim Johnston said the loan was to help cover significant spending on building works and was due to the imposition of 20% VAT on private school fees. The UK government last year announced the standard rate of VAT would be added to private school fees from January, with KWC announcing in September it would absorb the costs for the spring and summer said that change had presented a "challenge" for the school, which had coincided with it going through "major investment" as part of the consolidation but the money was not "to pay a VAT bill" but to make it a "sustainable business". 'Select few' But MHK Joney Faragher said it "feels wrong that the government is propping up private schools when state schools are under such pressure" and it could "exacerbate educational inequality".It was public money and "should benefit the whole island's young people rather than just a select few".Lawrie Hooper MHK said the grant was awarded at the same time as the Department of Education, Sports and Culture was trying to find £400,000 in savings for swimming told the House of Keys he was "perfectly comfortable" the school was eligible for the support under the scheme and the funds would be paid back within five years, with interest applied from year said with 185 staff KWC was one of the largest employers in the south of the island and brought £1.3m in exchequer benefits as well as £2.8m in local economy spending each minister said he recognised the concerns raised by members, but the application received by his department had satisfied the criteria for the loan had received approval from the Council of Ministers and Treasury concurrence so had "gone through the normal processes", he a statement Chairman of Governors for KWC Peter Clucas said the funding enabled the college to move forward with its consolidation project, which "underpins the school's long-term financial sustainability".He said the school was working toward a completion date of later this year for the project.
