Here's when you can renew your licence this month THE KZN Department of Transport released a statement informing the public of weekend dates and operating times of drivers licence testing centres and motor licensing offices for the month. Also read: New Ward boundaries could affect political landscape The Winklespruit Drivers Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) is open on Saturdays, July 19 and July 26 for all drivers licence-related transactions from 07:00 until 14:00. To book an appointment to renew your drivers licences or for any other enquiries, email [email protected] For motor vehicle licence transactions, the Winklespruit Sizakala Centre motor licensing office will be open on July 19 and July 26 from 07:30 until 14:00. This office only accepts card payments. The KZN DoT advised the community that DLTCs offer drivers licence-related services, including bookings for both learners and drivers tests, renewal of drivers licences, applications for and renewals of PrDPs and collection of drivers licence cards. Motor licensing offices offer only vehicle licensing-related services such as renewals of vehicle licence discs, change of vehicle ownership and more. The following documents are needed for the processing of drivers licence renewal applications: • Identity Document/Smart Card and a copy thereof • R250 for issue of drivers licence (provincial offices only accept card payments) • R90 for temporary drivers licence (provincial offices only accept card payments) and an ID-sized black and white or colour photograph. The following should be noted regarding proof of residence: • Must not be older than 3 months • Must clearly state the physical address, for example, a bank statement or store account statement • If the applicant is residing with parents, a letter by the parent accompanied with the proof of residence is required An eye test certificate from an optometrist is preferred and must not be older than 3 months. Watch: 5 dead, 13 injured in N3 crash near Marianhill in KZN Five people, including two police officers, died and 13 others were injured – three critically – when a minibus taxi veered off the N3 and rolled down a steep embankment near the Marianhill Toll Plaza in KZN late yesterday afternoon. The Witness reports that the crash occurred just before the Shongweni off-ramp at around 17:30. ALS Paramedics and Medical Services confirmed that emergency personnel were on the scene at the time. Video footage shared by ALS Paramedics and Medical Services showed medics working on the steep slope where the taxi landed. According to the KZN Department of Transport, the taxi, carrying 17 passengers, was travelling to Lxopo when the driver allegedly lost control while trying to avoid a reckless Polo driver. The vehicle plunged about 50m down the embankment. Truck drivers who witnessed the crash reported the Polo's erratic driving to nearby Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officials, who were in the area following a multidisciplinary roadblock earlier in the day. KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed the fatalities and said efforts were underway to trace the families of the deceased. 'We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. According to our dedicated team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate, the taxi veered off the road and rolled 50m down the embankment,' said Duma. Three passengers are in serious condition, and nine others sustained minor injuries. All were transported to R.K. Khan Hospital. 'We salute emergency rescue personnel who are working professionally to remove the bodies of the deceased,' Duma added. Duma raised concerns about the spike in winter road fatalities. Citing Road Traffic Management Corporation figures, he noted that over 900 people died in June alone. 'I have mandated the RTI team to sustain the 'No Nonsense, Zero Tolerance, and Alufakwa Campaign',' he said. Tourism groups call for urgent action on battlefield route infrastructure
The deteriorating condition of roads across the Umzinyathi District took centre stage during a special District Tourism Forum meeting held recently at the Umzinyathi Municipality offices. Tourism stakeholders from across the district gathered to engage directly with the KZN Department of Transport, raising urgent concerns about the impact of poor road conditions on the region's historical battlefield tourism routes. The meeting was chaired by K. Motumi from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), with Mr T. Dlamini from the Department of Transport present to hear and respond to the growing frustrations. There was consensus among the tourism representatives that road neglect is crippling the local tourism sector, once a strong drawcard for both domestic and international travellers. 'There has been a major decline in tourist buses,' said Pam McFadden of Tourism Dundee. 'Operators are pulling out after sustaining damage to their vehicles on our deteriorating roads.' This decline, stakeholders warned, has had a domino effect. Lodges and B&Bs are shutting down, unable to survive without visitor traffic to historic sites such as Isandlwana, Rorke's Drift, and Blood River. Heavy trucks transporting commercial goods were also singled out as a major contributor to the damage. Overloaded vehicles continue to break down road surfaces, leaving deep potholes and unsafe driving conditions in their wake. Douglas Rattray, owner of the well-known Fugitives' Drift Lodge, said many international tourists have cancelled visits due to unsafe roads. 'We've seen a sharp increase in cancellations. Tour operators can't risk their buses or their passengers on these routes anymore,' Rattray said. 'This is not just a tourism issue — it's an economic crisis for the entire district.' Recently, Rattray, local farmers, community members and a local councillor, Xolani Mkhize, joined forces to patch up the access to Rorke's Drift that had become undrivable following weeks of heavy rain in April with children unable to access schools. The Prince Imperial memorial, site of the death of Louis-Napoléon, the great-nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, has been particularly hard hit by sign thieves. The site, between Nquthu and Mondlo, is isolated and many visitors get lost without the signage. There was also, sometimes amusing concern over spelling mistakes on signs, with one famously declaring 'Rocks Drift 15km'. In response, the Department of Transport committed to conducting an audit of road infrastructure in key tourism areas and pledged to prioritise maintenance on high-traffic heritage routes. Search for missing aircraft ends in tragedy
The search for a missing aircraft has ended in tragedy after it was recovered, and the three people aboard found dead. According to reports, the aircraft departed Virginia Airport north of Durban at around 3pm on Sunday but failed to reach its alternate destination. It was last tracked flying over Ladysmith, heading south towards either Pietermaritzburg or Greytown. The KZN Department of Transport said an investigation is under way to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the accident. 'The Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre (ARCC) informed us that they will be handing over the matter to the SAPS Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for the official investigation,' said Transport MEC Siboniso Duma. 'We express our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. 'In particular, we are in touch with Zama Biyela, mother of the late student pilot Nqobile Biyela. 'This is the most difficult period for her and the entire family. 'Losing such a young, great leader with a promising career in the aviation industry, under such circumstances, is not only tragic but devastating,' said Duma. Authorities investigating tragic KZN crash, death toll revised to 8

According to KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the collision occurred at around 6:47am and involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 vehicle transporting members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC). While Duma initially gave the death toll as nine, authorities later confirmed that one of the bodies had been mistakenly counted twice and the correct death toll was eight. The victims were part of a group of 24 congregants travelling to Dukuduku in Mtubatuba, in northern KZN when tragedy struck. Duma said that the tow truck struck the rear of the Hyundai H-1, resulting in multiple fatalities and serious injuries. 'Those who were injured have been taken to hospitals and we wish them a speedy recovery. Equally, we express our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the Church,' he said. The National Department of Transport also expressed its condolences. Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa said they were 'deeply concerned and saddened by the loss of eight lives in a tragic road crash that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning on the N2 near Empangeni.' 'Preliminary reports indicate that the Hyundai H-1 was transporting members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) from their place of worship to the Dukuduku/Mtubatuba area when it was struck from behind by the truck,' they said.
