Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute far from over: MP Arvind Sawant

BELAGAVI: A fresh political storm has erupted over the long-standing Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute after Maharashtra MP Arvind Sawant said that the struggle to merge Belagavi and other border areas of Karnataka with Maharashtra 'will never stop.' Sawant, a Lok Sabha MP from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), released a video on social media in which he strongly criticised Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka Iranna Kadadi. Kadadi had recently told reporters that the border dispute is 'a closed chapter.' The remark triggered a fierce response from Sawant, who accused Kadadi of dismissing the sentiments of Marathi-speaking people in the border regions. 'As long as we are alive, the struggle to merge Belagavi, Karwar, Bidar, and Bhalki into Maharashtra will continue. The matter is still pending before the Supreme Court and is far from over. If Kadadi believes the issue is resolved, let him say so in the court,' Sawant said. Kadadi, in his earlier statement, had indirectly accused the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) of keeping the dispute alive for political reasons. 'People have moved on. They are embracing national parties and distancing themselves from the MES ideology,' Kadadi had said. In a sharp rebuttal, Sawant alleged that Kadadi was ignoring the aspirations of the Marathi-speaking population in the border areas. He urged Marathi-speaking voters to unite and support candidates representing their interests. 'People like Kadadi should not be allowed to win,' he said. MES, Maha leaders condemn Kadadi Leaders from the MES have also condemned Kadadi for his comments. Some MES representatives recently met with political figures in Maharashtra to discuss the ongoing situation.

Congress leader accuses Amarnath Jarkiholi of assault in Gokak

Congress leader Mahantesh Kadadi has alleged that some BJP members, including Amarnath Jarkiholi, son of MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi, assaulted his driver during the annual fair at the Laxmi temple in Gokak on July 3. 'On July 3, I was going around town in my open jeep after visiting the Laxmi temple. When I got down to meet a friend, some youth, including Amarnath Jarkiholi, attacked my driver. They ran away after beating him up. Police Sub-inspector K. B. Walikar, who was on the spot, neither tried to stop the attack nor did he help the victim. Mr. Walikar only tried to give some advise to my driver, saying he should not take the incident seriously, and left the spot,' Dr. Kadadi said. 'The police are mute spectators to the crimes being committed by some powerful people in Gokak. In yesterday's case, the police did not entertain us when we tried to submit a complaint. I will complain against this incident to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G. Parameshwar,' Dr. Kadadi said. Dr. Kadadi had contested unsuccessfully against Ramesh Jarkiholi in the 2023 Assembly polls. He is related to Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi who is a BJP leader.

24.85 lakh tonnes of rice distributed to ration card holders in 2024-25 in Karnataka

Karnataka distributed nearly 24.85 lakh tonnes of rice free of cost to ration card holders under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) during the 2024–25 financial year, marking a slight increase from the previous year's figure of 24.80 lakh tonnes, according to data presented at the State Level Consultative Committee (SLCC) (under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution) meeting held on Friday. The meeting, chaired by Rajya Sabha MP Iranna Kadadi, reviewed the performance of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Karnataka and examined State-centre coordination on food procurement and distribution. As per officials, the FCI facilitated the delivery of 24,85,799 tonnes of rice to NFSA beneficiaries, who receive 5 kg of food grain per person per day free of cost. The meeting also highlighted the Central government's interventions in the open market to stabilise food prices, notably the release of 4,60,959 tonnes of rice and 1,05,065 tonnes of wheat through the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS). These releases, officials said, were aimed at controlling rising market prices and ensuring affordability for consumers. In addition to NFSA, the PM Nutrition Scheme — which supports mid-day meals in schools — saw the distribution of 1,06,895 tonnes of food grains across Karnataka over the past year. From February 2025 onward, the State government began purchasing approximately 2,42,000 tonnes of rice per month from FCI to support its own food security programs. Within this, 7,811 tonnes of rice were specifically supplied under OMSS for meal provision to students in classes 9 and 10. The officials also said that the State received 1,14,710 tonnes of food grains for distribution to children and mothers through Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). 'Special allocations were also made to Yadgir and Raichur, two districts in Karnataka designated as aspirational districts by NITI Aayog. We distributed 32 tonnes of rice and 472 tonnes of wheat to support nutrition programs for adolescent girls,' the officials noted. Mr. Kadadi raised concerns over what he described as the Karnataka government's failure to meet procurement targets for essential grains such as ragi, paddy, and jowar under Minimum Support Price (MSP) provisions.
