NFL analyst says Falcons LB could be franchise tag candidate in 2026

Falcons linebacker Kaden Elliss named franchise tag candidate by Pro Football Sports Network The Atlanta Falcons had no choice but to let some players walk in free agency due to the team's lack of salary cap space. Center Drew Dalman signed with the Chicago Bears, linebacker Lorenzo Carter landed a contract with the Tennessee Titans, and defensive lineman Grady Jarrett was released before following Dalman to Chicago. Several more Falcons players, including linebacker Kaden Elliss, tight end Kyle Pitts and right tackle Kaleb McGary, will become unrestricted free agents in 2026. The team won't have much cap space to work with next season, unless Kirk Cousins is traded or released. Even if Atlanta finds a way to offload Cousins, there still won't be much money to spend on free agents. That will leave the team with some tough decisions to make in the offseason. One option for the Falcons could be to use the franchise tag on their most coveted player. Pro Football Sports Network's Brandon Austin named Elliss as the Falcons' top franchise tag candidate for the 2026 NFL season: Kaden Elliss, who ranked 51st in our list of the top 100 free agents for 2026, is coming off a strong 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons. He started all 17 games and recorded a career-high 151 combined tackles, including 85 solo stops. Elliss also tallied five sacks, 43 pressures, and 17 quarterback hits, with an outstanding 29.3% pressure rate on just 147 pass-rush snaps. His consistent production highlights his emergence as one of the NFL's most effective blitzing linebackers. With linebacker franchise tag values projected around $28 million for 2026, the Falcons could use the tag to retain Elliss in the short term while they work out an extension. They just have to decide if he's worth such a lofty amount. Either way, he could be in for a payday. -- Brandon Austin, PFSN As mentioned by PFSN, Elliss had a career year in 2024 and was one of the few consistent pieces on Atlanta's defense last season. Elliss, the son of two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Luther Elliss, signed a three-year, $21.5 million contract with the Falcons in 2023. The former Saints linebacker has become a versatile weapon for Atlanta's defense, whether he's rushing the quarterback or dropping into coverage. While Elliss makes sense as a franchise tag candidate, the Falcons have a handful of players to choose from. Right tackle Kaleb McGary also has a case for the franchise tag, assuming he performs well in 2025. Kyle Pitts, despite his underwhelming production, could be in the mix for the tag if he has a big year this season. Check out the full list of Falcons players who will become free agents in 2026, along with our latest 53-man roster projection for 2025.

Former Raider LB Divine Deablo Fits The Mold For The Atlanta Falcons New Identity

Former Raider LB Divine Deablo Fits The Mold For The Atlanta Falcons New Identity originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker has just what the Atlanta Falcons seek on defense: a new identity and an edgy style of athleticism. Advertisement Divine Deablo spent four seasons with the Raiders before signing with the Falcons during the offseason. During that time, he was consistent and athletic on defense, always appearing around the football. Deablo would start 42 of his 54 games spent with the Raiders. His stats speak for themselves. He would total 288 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, six pass defenses, two sacks, and two fumble recoveries. New Atlanta Falcons LB Divine Deablo makes a tackle last year while playing for the Las Vegas Raiders. Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Raheem Morris would speak about Deablo at Falcons mini-camp, saying, "His athleticism stands out. It's been unique. His length stands out, which has been unique, and really him keying and diagnosing behind the ball probably a lot better than we thought, and I'm really fired up to see that." Advertisement Deablo started his career at safety with the Virginia Tech Hokies, but after coming to the NFL, he transitioned to linebacker. Deablo has also been a hit with teammates, and they have noticed the type of talent he is with all of the intangibles. "I mean, you can see what makes him sick," Falcons linebacker Kaden Elliss said. "I think he had probably the best play today in practice, a really good tip. Just came in and knocked the ball out, and I broke it up for us. And he's got the length, he's got the speed, he's got the athleticism, and he's got the mentality." The Falcons are in the business of establishing a whole new feel for the defense, and Deablo would be asked which part of his skill set would help lessen the number of times that the defense was exploited last season. "I say my height and my speed, I feel like I'm very tall, 6-foot-3 and ¾, usually I say 6-foot-4. And I'm really fast. So, I think my speed for sure." When Deablo would be asked about the coaching styles of Raheem Morris and Jeff Ulbrich, he would say, "Very energetic. They got a lot of energy. They make sure you come out here ready to work. That's the only thing they want, and that's what we've been doing for them regarding defensive philosophy." Advertisement So far, the Falcons coaching staff has been pleased in what Deablo is doing. He will be looked upon to complement Falcons linebacker Kaden Elliss. The defense will look much improved from a subpar season last year. It will be interesting to see how the linebacker's role evolves under new defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, especially considering the Falcons' aggressive efforts to upgrade the edge-rushing group this offseason. -- Gennaro Filice, The Falcons hope rookies Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. can get the pass rush back to a respectable level this season. Elliss will be counted on more than ever as the team transitions to defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. His versatility will help Atlanta run a multitude of defensive looks.
