China's women target volleyball world No 1 spot after taking Japan scalp in Hong Kong

China's women vowed to become the best volleyball team in the world once again, after an impressive 3-1 win over Japan at the Volleyball Nations League in Hong Kong on Saturday. Advertisement Roared on by a boisterous home crowd at a sold-out Kai Tak Arena, China served Japan only their second defeat of the season – with the first a 3-2 loss to Italy on Friday. China's victory means they are now the highest-ranked team in Asia, stealing Japan's No 5 spot, with Nippon dropping down to No 6. 'I think every team will have this determination to be the best in the world, we are also hoping that we can again be the best,' Wang Yuanyuan, the middle blocker, said. 'But I think that there are many great teams in the world, and we need to attack every one of them. I believe that in regard to results and world rankings, we won't think too much, but instead enjoy every match.' China fans cheer on their team against Japan in the Women's Volleyball Nations League clash at Kai Tak Arena. Hong Kong Coliseum to hold more concerts after opening of Kai Tak Sports Park

Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom will be repositioned to hold more concerts following the launch of Kai Tak Sports Park, the city's tourism chief has said. Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui also revealed on Saturday the government would reserve some venues for long-running performances and Cantonese opera to ensure groups that staged quality performances had a chance to rent venues for shows. Law said Hong Kong Coliseum could be repositioned following the opening of Kai Tak Arena at Kai Tak Sports Park, which officially opened in March. 'With the opening of Kai Tak Sports Park, Hong Kong's sports and entertainment experience has been elevated to an unprecedented level,' she said in a speech at a wealth management summit. 'Volleyball, handball, fencing, table tennis and other sports being held at Kai Tak Arena have been well-received by athletes and audience, so we have room to adjust the positioning of Hong Kong Coliseum, which is of the same size.' Kai Tak Arena can seat 10,000 people while Hong Kong Coliseum can hold 12,500.

Women's Nations League volleyball: players praise Kai Tak Arena but will miss Coliseum

Players at the FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Arena have praised the new venue, saying the bigger and better facilities allowed for the best possible preparation, but they also said the memories forged at the event's former home would not be easily forgotten. The Volleyball Nations League Hong Kong 2025 presented by China Life kicked off on Wednesday at Kai Tak Arena, marking the first time it has not been held in the Coliseum since it came to the city in 2018. On Thursday, Paris Olympic champions Italy beat Thailand 3-0 to reclaim their position at the top of the league, before China emerged victorious with a 3-2 win over Bulgaria. 'Both venues are beautiful,' said Italy's outside hitter Alice Degradi. 'But I have very beautiful memories from the Coliseum, because we were losing 2-1 against China [in 2023], and when we beat them, we qualified for the finals. 'I have that place in my heart, we have good memories there, but we want to create new ones here.' Thailand's Ajcharaporn Kongyot (left) said Kai Tak was a more comfortable venue. However, Degradi said that in terms of the facilities on offer to the elite players, Kai Tak was the clear winner, a view echoed by her Thai counterpart, Ajcharaporn Kongyot.

Tyson Yoshi The Villain Live in Hong Kong

Photograph: Courtesy The Bridge Agency Indie Hong Kong hip hop artist Tyson Yoshi has announced his first concert at the Kai Tak Arena, promising to show fans a new side of himself: the self-proclaimed villain. Instead of a straight-up 'bad guy', Yoshi's villain signifies his position as a black sheep in the music industry, from not doing pop to insisting on remaining independent instead of signing onto a major label. Referencing his favourite anime shows, he says, 'Other artists might be the heroes in Naruto or One Piece , but I'm more like Death Note .' Yoshi's concerts will run from July 4 to 6, and tickets range from $680 to $1,180. Lack of cash could see Hong Kong drop out as hosts of fencing World Cup

Hong Kong could be forced to withdraw as hosts of the FIE Women's Foil World Cup next year because of a lack of sponsors, sources have told the Post. Advertisement The three-day tournament, featuring individual and team events like this year's edition at AsiaWorld-Expo, is scheduled to run from January 9 to 11. However, securing financial backing has proved difficult in the current economic climate. 'We were awarded the rights by FIE but securing sponsors would be crucial and given the current economic environment, it's highly likely that we might not be able to get one,' a source said. 'It would be great if we could do it, but that being said, there are other priorities. 'First it's the National Games, then there is the FIE Junior Men's and Women's Epee World Cup, and there's also the all-important World Championships next July. The World Cup was the last thing to worry about.' Hong Kong's Kuan Yu-ching (right) against Ukraine's Anna Tarankeno.
