Ekitike to Liverpool: Hong Kong fans could be first to see new signing in action

Fans in Hong Kong could be the first to see new Liverpool signing Hugo Ekitike in action. The Reds announced the French striker's arrival on Thursday and added that he would be flying straight to the city to join his teammates for their pre-season tour. They will take on AC Milan at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday. Liverpool are still waiting on international clearance before the 23-year-old Ekitike takes the field, but supporters in Hong Kong will certainly catch a glimpse of their new idol. Ekitike, signed from Eintracht Frankfurt, is the latest in a number of signings made by Liverpool this summer. He joins fellow signings Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Giorgi Mamadashvili, who have already made their first pre-season appearances against English second-tier sides Preston and Stoke. Meanwhile, Liverpool have been training in the city following their arrival, with videos on their social media channels showing players being put through their paces – including Wirtz, who demonstrated why fans are so excited about his British-record US$156 million arrival from Bayer Leverkusen.

Counting down to the Hong Kong Football Festival

This month, Hong Kong hosts the much-anticipated Hong Kong Football Festival 2025 at the newly opened Kai Tak Stadium. Bringing together four of Europe's most high-profile clubs – Liverpool, AC Milan, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – it's the city's latest stab at a large-scale sporting event, following the now infamous Messi-less exhibition match played between Inter Miami CF and Hong Kong League XI in February 2024. With more than 48,000 fans expected at each game, the festival is set to draw the largest-ever football crowd in Hong Kong. Christian Pulisic of AC Milan could be jetting in for the Hong Kong Football Festival. 'There are few bigger occasions in English football than a North London derby,' says Ryan Norys, the chief revenue officer for Tottenham Hotspur, 'and to play this fixture in Hong Kong will be a huge occasion for our passionate fan base across Asia.'
