EAM Jaishankar raises trade roadblocks in talks with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi
External affairs minister S Jaishankar on Monday held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Beijing and raised the issue of restrictive trade measures and roadblocks to economic cooperation in the backdrop of restrictions on rare earth magnet supplies to India. He also brought up the issue of faster de-escalation along LAC in eastern Ladakh and the two sides agreed to take additional practical steps, including travel to each other's country and direct flight connectivity, for facilitating people-to-people exchanges, said the external affairs ministry. "The EAM highlighted the positive impact of peace and tranquillity in the border for smooth development in bilateral relations and supported continued efforts towards de-escalation and border management. He underlined the need for cooperation on trans-border rivers, including resumption of provision of hydrological data by the Chinese side. He also took up restrictive trade measures and roadblocks to economic cooperation," said a statement issued by the ministry. "Our bilateral relationship requires that we take a far-seeing approach to our ties... We have made good progress in the past nine months for the normalisation of our bilateral relations. It is a result of the resolution of friction along the border and our ability to maintain peace and tranquillity there. This is the fundamental basis for mutual strategic trust and for smooth development of bilateral relations," Jaishankar told Wang. ET had reported that India and China could discuss a range of contentious issues, including the Dalai Lama's succession and the recent Indo-Pak tensions when Jaishankar meets Wang Yi. Jaishankar and Wang Yi reviewed the overall state of India-China bilateral relationship. Jaishankar appreciated China's cooperation for the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar yatra. He offered India's support for a successful Shanghai Cooperation Organisation presidency amid expectations of the PM's visit for the summit.

The minister suggested a structured roadmap be developed for complete India and China have disengaged troops on the Ladakh border by moving them away from hotspots, a larger de-escalation has not taken place as China has not moved back the thousands of troops it deployed near the Indian border in the guise of a military exercise in 2020, at the beginning of the Covid-19 said that the two ministers agreed to continue consultations at various levels to achieve progress on issues related to disengagement, de-escalation, border management and eventual de-limitation through existing mechanisms. Singh appreciated the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar yatra after a gap of five years. During the meeting, Singh also briefed his Chinese counterpart on the Pahalgam terror attack as well as India's actions under Operation Sindoor.

Indian pilgrims cross Chinese border into Tibet as relations thaw
A religious pilgrimage from India into China facilitated by both governments has resumed for the first time in five years — the latest sign of a cautious thaw in the contentious relationship between the world's two most populous nations. The first batch of Indian pilgrims taking part in the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra — named for the two Tibetan sacred sites the route traverses — left New Delhi on Sunday morning and crossed the mountainous border into China's Tibet Autonomous Region on Friday.

First batch of 33 pilgrims leaves for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra via Sikkim's Nathula
'The first batch of 33 pilgrims and two liaison officers left for Kailash Manasarovar Yatra via Nathula in Sikkim on Friday (June 20, 2025),' officials said. 'Governor Om Prakash Mathur flagged off the yatra at a function held at the Sino-Indian frontier in East Sikkim,' they said. The function was organised by the Ministry of External Affairs. Tourism and Civil Aviation Department Additional Chief Secretary C.S. Rao welcomed the pilgrims on behalf of the State Government and the people of Sikkim. He said that the first batch comprised 33 pilgrims and two liaison officers, one each from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. Mr. Rao said the State Government, in coordination with the departments concerned and paramilitary forces, had made all necessary arrangements to ensure the safety, comfort and smooth passage of the pilgrims during their journey. The Governor, in his address, appreciated the reopening of the yatra after six years and said that the resumption of pilgrimage was made possible owing to consistent efforts by the Centre. Mathur said Kailash Manasarovar holds deep religious and cultural importance for pilgrims across the country. The Sikkim Governor said that more batches of pilgrims would undertake the journey in the coming days. Mathur lauded the State Government for the flag-off event at Nathula and appreciated the people of Sikkim for upholding the value of "Atithi Devo Bhava" with commitment and respect towards the pilgrims. The Governor advised the pilgrims to take care of their health and expressed hope for a smooth and safe pilgrimage. This year, 750 Indian pilgrims have been selected for the yatra, with 500 travelling in 10 groups via the Nathu La route and 250 through the Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand.
