First batch of pilgrims reaches Manasarovar Lake as yatra resumes after 5 years: Chinese Ambassador to India shares photos
The first group of Indian pilgrims undertaking the sacred Kailash-Manasarovar Yatra, has reached Manasarovar Lake, marking the resumption of the journey after a five-year break. Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong posted this on X. He added, "Pleased to know that the first batch of pilgrims has arrived at Lake Mapam Yun Tso (Manasarovar) in Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, China.' This group, consisting of 36 pilgrims, is the first to visit the holy site since the pilgrimage was suspended in 2020. Their arrival signals a significant step in the thawing of India-China relations, which had been strained due to the border standoff in Eastern Ladakh since 2020. A breakthrough came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, last year, paving the way for renewed diplomatic and cultural exchanges. He added, 'Expressed my happiness on restarting the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after a gap of nearly six years. It is incumbent on both sides to maintain this positive momentum and avoid adding new complexities in the bilateral relationship.' China refers to Tibet as 'Xizang', Mount Kailash as 'Gang Renpoche', and Manasarovar Lake as 'Mapam Yun Tso'. These spiritual landmarks hold immense significance for many faiths, particularly for Hindus who consider Mount Kailash the abode of Lord Shiva. Among the pilgrims is 68-year-old Damina Bendya, who is visiting Tibet for the first time. 'China and India are neighbours. China is wonderful, and all the staff here have been very warm and helpful,' she told the state-run Xinhua news agency upon reaching Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. He described Mount Kailash and Manasarovar Lake as vital to cultural and religious ties, highlighting their role in fostering people-to-people connections between the two countries. Guo also noted that this year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and China and expressed China's willingness to work with India to promote stability and positive engagement. Rajnath Singh meets Chinese counterpart; stresses avoiding new complexities in ties
"Expressed my happiness on the restarting of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after a gap of nearly six years," he said. "It is incumbent on both sides to maintain this positive momentum and avoid adding new complexities in the bilateral relationship," he added. Singh also presented Don a Madhubani painting called 'Tree of Life' that symbolised wisdom and vitality, officials said. Madhubani art painting has its origin in the Mithila region of Bihar. This painting is a symbol of wisdom and vitality. According to a Chinese readout, Singh said in the meeting with Don that India does not seek conflict or confrontation with China, and is willing to properly handle differences, enhance communication and promote mutual trust for the steady development of bilateral relations. Singh's visit to Qingdao coincided with the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in Tibet. It is taking place after a gap of nearly five years. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra was suspended initially in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently because of the military standoff between the two sides on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. The pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake in China's Tibet Autonomous Region holds religious significance to Hindus as well as Jains and Buddhists. The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020, and a deadly clash at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe downturn in ties between the two neighbours. The face-off effectively ended following completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21 last year. In December last, NSA Doval visited Beijing and held talks with Wang under the framework of Special Representatives (SR) dialogue on the boundary dispute. The decision to revive the SR mechanism and other such dialogue formats was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan on October 23, 2024. The Modi-Xi meeting came two days after India and China firmed up a disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok. Doval visited China this week as well to attend a conclave of top security officials of the SCO.

Watch: Meet the first Yatris to Kailash Manasarovar yatra
The Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is resuming after a gap of 6 years. The yatra has been on since 1981, but came to a halt due to the Covid pandemic, then the Galwan conflict and tensions at the LAC between India and China that lasted from 2020 to 2024. Now, a series of steps are being taken to 'normalise' ties between India and China, and the restart of the yatra is one of them. About 750 pilgrims will travel to Tibet between June and August, with the first batch expected to travel from Delhi on June 30. At the diplomatic level, top leaders including Ajit Doval, Rajnath Singh, S. Jaishankar will travel to China for summits in the coming months. PM Narendra Modi too is expected to visit China for the SCO summit, his first visit to China since the LAC tensions.
