Surge lose late to Rattlers on trio of threes by Pierre-Louis

Nate Pierre-Louis led the Saskatchewan Rattlers past the Calgary Surge 96-89 Thursday night in Saskatoon. Saskatchewan's Nate Pierre-Louis got hot late and the party was soon over for Calgary, as the Rattlers edged the Surge 96-89 in Saskatoon. Pierre-Louis sank three straight threes in Target Score Time to provide the margin of victory, giving the Rattlers their first win at home this season. Saskatchewan has owned the 8-4 Surge so far this season, defeating them by three points in Calgary in early June. Calgary was led by Greg Brown III's 22 points and eight rebounds. Jameer Nelson Jr. added 19 points, while Sean Miller-Moore had 13. Pierre Louis led the Rattlers with 28 points and five assists. The Rattlers outrebounded the Surge 50-47, including 17 offensive boards which gave them a huge advantage in second-chance points. 'They did a good job of crashing the glass and they beat us on the boards and I think that dictated the game,' Calgary head coach Kaleb Canales said. The lead changed hands five times in the third quarter, before the Rattlers took a one point lead, 72-71 on a basket at the buzzer from Isaac Simon. The Surge dropped into second in the Western Conference behind the Vancouver Bandits, who are 8-3. Next up for the Surge is a July 3 road game in Brampton.

CEBL's Calgary Surge hire Kaleb Canales as head coach

CALGARY — The Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League announced Thursday that former NBA bench boss Kaleb Canales has been named the team's head coach for the 2025 season. The 46-year-old Canales, who is currently the associate head coach for the Dallas Mavericks' NBA G League affiliate, has previously been an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic. During the 2011-12 NBA season, he was promoted to interim head coach of the Trail Blazers for 23 games after head coach Nate McMillan was dismissed, becoming the NBA's youngest active head coach and the first Mexican-American to hold the position. Canales is the first CEBL coach to have NBA head coaching experience. 'We could not be more excited to have such an experienced and talented individual like coach Canales join our team this season," said Surge general manager Shane James in a statement. "Rosters in the CEBL experience substantial turnover each season and that has emboldened our organization to approach coaching recruitment quite differently than other teams." Canales has also served as associate head coach of the Mexican men's national team since 2021. The Surge open the CEBL season May 11 on the road against the Edmonton Stingers. NBA's Kaleb Canales signs on as Calgary Surge head coach ahead of team's 3rd season

The opportunity to develop the game at a global level in Canada prompted NBA coaching veteran Kaleb Canales to sign with the Calgary Surge as its new head coach. Canales makes the move north of the border, stepping away from the highest level of professional basketball and his role as the G League's Texas Legends associate head coach, after more than a decade worth of NBA experience. The Calgary Surge announced the move Thursday. "I just think it's perfect timing for me and my career and my goals and what I still want to achieve," Canales said in an interview with CBC News. "I wasn't just like actively looking, but when the opportunity presented itself and I felt the connection and the energy and the vibes with the leadership group, it just became a no-brainer from my end." Canales has coached NBA legends and Hall of Famers including Dirk Nowitzki and has been behind the bench with teams including the New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Indiana Pacers. His first head coaching stint came when he led the 2011 Portland Trailblazers. "Playing for [him] was great for me as I entered the league because of how genuine he is as a man first," said Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard, in a release. Lillard won Rookie of the Year under Canales, who was an assistant coach at the time. "The support, the challenges, the direction, the love, the care, the time, and the belief really meant a lot to me as I transitioned [into the NBA]," he said. Canales' appointment with Portland made him the first Mexican-American head coach in the NBA and his role with the Surge marks another debut achievement for him and the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). He's set to become the first head coach in the league with NBA experience. "Basketball has gotten so much better everywhere," Canales said. "I feel I can bring a unique set of winning tools to our program and our culture and our standard and the excitement that it will bring to our Surge fans." The Calgary Surge begin their third CEBL season in May against their provincial rivals, the Edmonton Stingers. The team will look to make its third championship weekend appearance in as many seasons after falling short in the semi-finals last year and losing in the finals a season before that.
