Police probing death of student found in drain near Papar school dorm
Kamaruddin says a full investigation is currently underway, with all related aspects being examined to identify the exact cause of the incident. – Bernama photo PAPAR (July 18): Police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of death of a 13-year-old female student who was found unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory here last Wednesday. The victim is believed to have fallen from a third-floor dormitory at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama (SMKA) Tun Datu Mustafa Limauan, before being discovered at around 3am. Papar District Police Chief, Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka, said they received a report on the incident at 8.16am the same day. He said the student was immediately rushed to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for treatment. 'However, she was pronounced dead at around 1pm on Thursday,' he said in a statement today. Kamaruddin said a full investigation is currently underway, with all related aspects being examined to identify the exact cause of the incident. 'We urge the public not to speculate, as it may interfere with the investigation and add distress to the grieving family,' he said. He also called on anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in the investigation by contacting the Papar District Police Headquarters at 088-912222 or by visiting the nearest police station. The case went viral on social media after news of the incident involving the student from Sipitang began circulating, sparking widespread speculation and reactions online. Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said her ministry is working closely with the authorities on the case. 'The ministry's senior management and I visited the family at the hospital to ensure their needs are met and their welfare is taken care of. 'The Sabah Education Department has also provided immediate assistance, including psychosocial support for the family,' she said in a Facebook post today. Fadhlina appealed to the public to refrain from speculation that could hinder the investigation and to respect the family's privacy. 'Action will be taken in accordance with the investigation's outcome,' she said, while expressing condolences to the family and praying for their strength and patience during this difficult time. The girl, who was from Sipitang and also a resident at the dormitory, is believed to have fallen from the building and was found at 3am that day. Papar OCPD Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said his department received a report on the incident at 8.16am on Wednesday. He said the victim was taken to the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital here for treatment. 'However, she was confirmed dead at about 1pm on Thursday (July 17),' he said in a statement issued here on Friday (July 18), confirming the child's death. PAPAR – Nine individuals have been arrested to assist in investigations regarding a brawl and riot incident at a restaurant in Kinarut, here, on Sunday evening. The incident, which occurred at about 6pm, was believed to have stemmed from dissatisfaction between two parties, involving individuals aged between 19 and their 50s. Papar District Police Chief Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the initial investigations revealed the fight erupted due to a misunderstanding when a local suspect, drinking at the restaurant, addressed a Pakistani restaurant operator in a harsh tone. "Both parties expressed dissatisfaction and argued loudly before engaging in a confrontation that escalated into a scuffle. "The situation spiralled out of control when their friends at the location intervened. The fight intensified as both sides used chairs and wooden sticks as weapons to attack each other. "However, the brawl was eventually broken up by members of the public at the scene," he said when contacted by Sinar Harian on Monday. Kamaruddin added that further investigation also found that the misunderstanding originated from an incident a week prior. "The Pakistani suspect had previously visited the local suspect's shop to sell scrap metal but was unhappy with the price offered, considering it too low. "The issue escalated when the scrap metal shop owner and several friends later visited the restaurant as customers, leading to the brawl," he explained. He further noted that a video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, showing the chaotic scene with overturned tables and chairs scattered across the area. Two groups of individuals used chairs as weapons in a fight at a restaurant in Kinarut, Papar. "Following the incident, all individuals involved surrendered themselves at about 1pm today. The case is being investigated under Sections 148/160 of the Penal Code for rioting and fighting in public. "The public is urged to provide any information regarding this incident to the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Mazlan Mali, at 013-656 4978," he said. Kamaruddin also advised the public against speculating about the incident. PAPAR: One man was killed and two others injured in an early morning crash involving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a lorry along KM16, Jalan Papar–Bongawan on Thursday. District Police Chief Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the 4.48am incident occurred when the MPV, driven by a 35-year-old man, lost control and veered into the opposite lane. The vehicle, which was heading towards Membakut from Papar with two passengers onboard, collided with the front right side of an oncoming lorry. The 66-year-old backseat passenger sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Man killed in Papar crash

PAPAR: One was killed while another two injured following an accident involving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a lorry along KM16, Jalan Papar-Bongawan, here, Thursday. District Police Chief Supt Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka said the incident occurred at about 4.48am when the MPV, driven by a 35-year-old, skidded out of control into the opposite lane while traveling towards Membakut from Papar with two passengers. 'Upon entering the opposite lane, the victims' vehicle crashed to the front right of an upcoming lorry. 'Following the impact, the back passenger who was a 66-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his head and was pronounced dead by medical officers at the scene,' he said. Kamaruddin said the driver sustained injuries to his leg while another passenger, 25, was left with minor injuries. Both injured were given first aid treatment by Fire and Rescue Department personnel while the deceased was sent to Papar Hospital for further action, he added.
