'We heard arguments': Neighbour on dead boy case
PETALING JAYA: What appeared to be routine family disputes has evolved into a murder investigation following the discovery of a young boy's remains in Pahang, weeks after he was reported missing from Johor. Speaking to The Star, 47-year-old resident, Kamarudin Abdullah, who lives in the same Seri Alam neighbourhood as the victim, M. Tishant's family, revealed that disturbing sounds frequently emanated from the household. 'We regularly heard shouting matches between the parents, loud enough for the entire street to notice. There was also the sound of a child weeping during these incidents,' Kamarudin explained during an interview with the English daily on Tuesday. The neighbour described the family as reclusive, with the father avoiding social interaction with other residents and communicating only when absolutely necessary. 'Learning about the boy's death came as a complete shock to all of us,' he added. According to Kamarudin, several family members and relatives visited the property on Monday evening but departed within hours. He noted that the couple had been absent from their residence for approximately one month, appearing only sporadically and never together. 'None of us had seen the child for several weeks before this tragedy unfolded,' he stated, mentioning that the family had relocated to the area roughly twelve months earlier. An inspection of the property revealed it to be completely vacant, with an unlocked front gate and no signs of occupancy. The case began when a 36-year-old man contacted authorities claiming his son had vanished from a coffee shop in Bukit Indah. However, the man was subsequently detained for seven days after investigators discovered the child's body in Rompin, Pahang. Iskandar Puteri district police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan reportedly confirmed the father's arrest on July 24, with remand extended until Thursday to facilitate the investigation. 'The suspect filed his report at approximately 2.15am on July 24, alleging his son disappeared the previous day after being left unattended in a parked vehicle at Bukit Indah,' Kumarasan explained. The suspect claimed he had briefly left the child in the car around 6pm on July 23 to purchase food, discovering the boy missing upon his return. Initial investigations proceeded under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, focussing on child neglect charges. However, continued investigation led authorities to the discovery of a child's remains in Rompin, located over 200 kilometres from where the initial report was filed. 'Evidence gathered during interrogation suggests the discovered remains belong to the missing child,' ACP Kumarasan stated. The investigation has been transferred to Jempol district police headquarters in Negri Sembilan for further examination. READ ALSO: Father remanded for 7 days over son's death in Negeri Sembilan Authorities have confirmed that the suspect now faces additional charges for filing a fraudulent police report, with investigations proceeding under Section 182 of the Penal Code.

Thai cuisine true to its Bangkok roots
IF you are craving the punchy flavours of Thai cuisine without needing to hop on a plane, there is a place right in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. For a limited time, The Mesh at Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur City Centre is serving Thai food that transports diners straight to the bustling streets of Bangkok. The hotel's chef de cuisine Kamarudin Dali said the dishes in The Mesh x Siam Road were authentically Thai, as two chefs from Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park were invited to teach the team to prepare the dishes from scratch. To start off the buffet, there's an enticing variety of appetisers. The Mesh buffet offers a spread of typically Thai dishes of bold flavours that transport guests straight to the streets of Bangkok. Som Tam Goong (green papaya salad with prawns) is tossed fresh in front of diners, its crunchy texture and balance of sweet, sour, salty and spicy notes instantly awakening the palate. The Larb Kai (spicy minced chicken salad) offers a mix of herbs with a hint of roasted rice crunch, while Yum Som-O (pomelo salad) combines juicy pomelo segments with sea prawn and a spicy chilli paste dressing for a refreshing zing. Pla Neua Yang (slow-cooked beef brisket salad) is richly flavoured with lemongrass, shallot and mint, giving it a fresh and aromatic finish. Tom Yam Goong stands out with its thick, flavourful broth, slightly different from local versions. Kamarudin said the fragrant soup was made with prawn, mushroom, kaffir lime, lemongrass and just the right amount of heat. Authenticity is at the heart of the mains too, he said. 'The Pad Krapoa Nuea (stir-fried minced beef with basil) and Pad Krapoa Gai (the chicken option) are prepared the traditional Thai way, which is slightly dry, allowing the bold basil and chilli notes to shine through. Pad Thai Goong with a generous amount of plump, juicy prawns. 'Comforting street food like pineapple fried rice and instant noodles stir-fried with tom yam spices add a casual touch. 'Fried favourites such as vegetable spring rolls, fish mousse wrapped in palm leaf and Thai fish cake are served with a tangy chilli dip to round out the selection,' he highlighted. The live cooking stations are a major highlight of the buffet. At the Pad Thai Goong station, silky rice noodles are cooked with juicy prawn, bean sprout, tofu and eggs. Guests can ask for a generous sprinkling of crushed peanut and lime juice on top to complete the dish. Another standout is Daging Bakar Danok – juicy, grilled marinated beef slices served with spicy dipping sauce. The meat is tender and smoky, with a hint of char that enhances its rich, savoury profile. If you enjoy dessert, the variety here is bound to impress. Som Tam Goong served atop sticky rice and grilled chicken. There's the chewy and fragrant Kanom Babin (mini coconut pancakes), while Mango Sticky Rice is served with perfectly ripened mango and a generous drizzle of creamy coconut sauce. Pandan Toast provides a comforting sweetness, while Ploy Krob (water chestnuts in coconut milk) and Kluay Buad Chee (bananas in coconut milk) offer a refreshing finish to the meal. To complement the feast, a variety of traditional Thai beverages are available, including rich Thai Iced Tea, aromatic Thai Green Tea and soothing Lemongrass Juice. Alongside the Thai food, there are also some Malaysian favourites for those needing a bit of local fare. The buffet is available until June 30, priced at RM168nett per adult and RM84nett per child for dinner and RM148nett per adult and RM74nett per child for lunch (Saturday and Sunday). UPSI bus crash survivors plan lawsuit against bus driver and company
KUALA LUMPUR: A group of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students involved in the chartered bus crash along the Jeli-Gerik Road on June 9 will pursue legal action against the bus driver and company. One of the survivors, Abdul Wafiy Kamarudin, said the group seeks compensation for injuries and loss of belongings and to serve as a lesson for all drivers to be careful when driving on the road. "The claim involves compensation for injuries and loss of personal belongings during the accident. "The claim will be submitted after the documentation process with the agencies involved is completed," he said. Kamarudin said they were still gathering victims interested in joining the claim. "So far, the majority of my friends are ready for legal action with a lawyer. "A line-up of credible lawyers is ready to fight this case in court," said Kamarudin, who held discussions with lawyer Dr Mahmud Jumaat. Meanwhile, Mahmud said he and his team would help the victims' families based on the law to enable them to get due justice. He said that so far, his team was still in the process of discussing with next-of-kin and family members. "It is sad to hear of third parties who promised they would receive hundreds of thousands of ringgit. That is not accurate because there is an act concerning it, and we act according to that act. "What is important is that these victims and their families get defence and they have the right to demand justice from this heartbreaking tragedy," he said. A total of 15 UPSI students tragically died when the special chartered bus carrying them from Jertih, Terengganu, to the main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, crashed into a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on June 9. The accident also resulted in 33 injuries, including the bus driver and conductor, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Perodua Alza.

‘I was voicing concerns'
In solidarity: Wong (front row, fourth from left) arriving at Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur. With her in the front row are (from second left) Chan, Kamarudin, Low and Tan. — MUHAMAD SHAHRIL ROSLI/The Star Cops quiz MCA Youth chief over post on data collection KUALA LUMPUR: Pahang MCA Youth chief Wong Siew Mun is under police investigation for allegedly causing public alarm and misusing network facilities following her comments on the government's collection of mobile phone data. Her lawyer Kamarudin Ahmad said police revealed that the investigation is being carried out under Section 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Wong arrived at Bukit Aman at about 10.45am yesterday, accompanied by a legal team led by Kamarudin and about 20 MCA Youth members. She met with investigators shortly after and spent about two hours giving her statement. Wong was summoned by police after posting a video on TikTok on June 6 questioning the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) move to collect mobile phone data from telecommunications companies. The MCMC reportedly said the data, which included IP call records and geolocation coordinates, would be anonymised and used to support policymaking in the ICT and tourism sectors. The commission stressed that no individual user could be identified through the data collected. 'The video I posted was based on factual reports by mainstream media and official statements from a minister and a government agency confirming the data collection,' Wong told reporters before entering Bukit Aman. 'I was merely voicing public concerns, with no intention of inciting unrest or disrupting public order. When the public voices its grievances, the government should look into its own weaknesses and enhance its policies, not find ways to silence us,' she added. Kamarudin called on MCMC to withdraw its police report and cease the investigation. Wong later revealed that police were investigating two videos she had uploaded on the same issue. Both Wong and Kamarudin also commended the police for their professionalism throughout the process. Also present at Bukit Aman were MCA publicity bureau chairman Chan Quin Er, her deputy Ivone Low and Selangor MCA Youth chief Tan Jie Sen. Meanwhile, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said the party stood firmly behind Wong and would provide legal assistance in her efforts to defend the people's right to freedom of expression. Dr Wee said on Facebook that Wong's comments were based on a report published by the South China Morning Post.

Asean Unggas Festival in Kelantan serves to strengthen ties among member countries
KOTA BARU: The ASEAN Unggas Festival 2025, organised by the Kelantan government and held for the first time today with nearly 1,000 participants, serves as a platform to strengthen relations among member countries. Kelantan State Tourism, Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Kamarudin Md Nor said that the organisation of the festival is also an effort by the state government to introduce Kelantan on the international level. "We are very satisfied with the response... It reflects a shared interest in competitions, thus becoming a tourist attraction and opening opportunities for bird enthusiasts to generate income and strengthen relationships among ASEAN countries," he told reporters after officiating the festival here today. The festival features five competition categories: the zebra dove, spotted dove, myna, Serama chicken and Queen chicken, and will be included in the state's annual tourism calendar. Kamarudin said the festival received the highest response from Thailand with 100 participants, followed by Indonesia (10), Singapore (five) and Brunei (two). Meanwhile, Sabri Ab Latif, 51, from Pattani, Thailand, whose entry won the songbird category, said he started visiting Kelantan when he was 25 years old, due to his interest in the songbirds. Sabri, who keeps 30 songbirds, said that through the hobby he has managed to create a network of contacts throughout the country, especially in Kelantan, and many have even obtained hybrid bird seeds from his flock. "This activity is not only a profitable hobby, but also a platform to get to know the culture and arts of ASEAN countries, including Malaysia," he said. In the pigeon category, Nordin Lae Mina, 42, from Songkla, Thailand, who emerged winner said he started learning Malay after participating in the bird competitions in Malaysia. "Before, I didn't understand Malay at all, but after participating in various competitions in Malaysia for several years, I started to master the language," he said. The former teacher now works on bird farming full-time and owns almost 200 birds because of his deep interest in the field. – BERNAMA Nation Nov 18, 2024 @ 3:05am Asean Festival 2024 celebrates cultures, strengthens ties Nation Feb 22, 2025 @ 12:36am Asean strengthens ties with China, explores new collaboration Nation Jan 19, 2025 @ 6:14pm Malaysia strengthens regional ties at Asean Foreign Ministers' Retreat Nation Jan 19, 2025 @ 5:46am Ponggal festival promotes unity among people, strengthens ties - Fahmi
