Anshul Kamboj Reacts After Making India Debut In Manchester Test: "Can't Express It..."

Indian pacer Anshul Kamboj showed his excitement and humility after being picked in place of injured Akash Deep for the fourth Test against England in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday. 'The feeling is surreal. So much that I can't express it in words. I will just look to do better as much as I can,' said the 24-year-old fast bowler in a video shared by the BCCI, shortly after receiving his Test cap from former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta. Just a week ago, Kamboj was training in Karnal with a Dukes ball, hoping that his chance would come soon. When injuries hit India's pace attack ahead of the Manchester Test, the selectors turned to Kamboj — a consistent performer in domestic cricket over the past few seasons. On Wednesday, he became India's 318th Test player, replacing the injured Akash Deep, who is suffering from a groin injury. Kamboj, a right-handed batter and a right-handed medium pacer, first caught the attention of fans and selectors last season during the Ranji Trophy, when he took all 10 wickets in an innings for Haryana against Kerala — a rare achievement in Indian cricket. Since then, he has grown steadily. In 24 first-class matches so far, he has taken 79 wickets and also contributed useful runs down the order. His recent performance for India 'A' against the England Lions further strengthened his case. In a four-day game in Northampton last month, he picked up two wickets in each innings and remained unbeaten on 51 in the second innings, showing calmness and control with both bat and ball. Kamboj, who represented Mumbai Indians in 2025, was part of the Chennai Super Kings squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, playing under MS Dhoni. He picked up eight wickets in eight matches, but Test cricket has always been his biggest goal.

'Can't Express My Feelings In Words': BCCI Welcomes Anshul Kamboj To Test Cricket

Anshul Kamboj made his Test debut for India against England at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Just a week ago, Anshul Kamboj was training in Karnal with the Dukes ball he brought with him from England. The world noticed him performing promisingly against the England Lions, but nobody had thought he would be making his Test debut in England in the coming days. As India ran out of bowling options due to injuries, they summoned Kamboj ahead of the fourth Test at Old Trafford and on Wednesday, he became the 318 th player to represent India in Test cricket. Meanwhile, the BCCI shared a video to announce Kamboj's entry to international cricket. The speedster could be seen sharing a laugh with senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah, getting ready for the Test match in Manchester, getting his debut cap from former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta and also sharing his thoughts on representing the country in the longest format of the game. Anshul Kamboj grabbed headlines last season when he took all 10 wickets in an innings during a Ranji Trophy match for Haryana against Kerala in Rohtak—a rare feat in Indian domestic cricket. In total, he has played 24 first-class matches so far, picking up 79 wickets and scoring 486 runs. He was last seen in action for India A in a four-day game against the England Lions in Northampton from June 6 to 9, 2025. It was a solid all-round show from him—two wickets in each innings and an unbeaten 51 with the bat in the second, helping India A draw the match. Kamboj is part of the Chennai Super Kings setup in the IPL. He was bought for ₹3.40 crore in the mega auction last year. He made his debut for CSK against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 11, 2025, in Chennai and picked up a wicket. He went on to play eight matches in the season, finishing with as many wickets under the leadership of MS Dhoni. In the past three years, Kamboj has steadily grown in domestic cricket. Along with the 79 wickets, he has a couple of five-wicket hauls and a highest score of 51\*—the one he made against the Lions. With both bat and ball, the young all-rounder has shown he's ready for bigger challenges. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 18:57 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IND vs ENG: What led Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir to prefer rookie Anshul Kamboj over Prasidh Krishna in 4th Test?

Despite an impressive show for India A during their tour of England last month, Anshul Kamboj didn't find a place in the Indian squad for the five-match Test series against England. But, as luck would have it, Kamboj was called from India to join the senior squad ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester. With pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh both injured, captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir decided to hand the Haryana pacer his debut India cap at Old Trafford - just three years after making his first-clash debut with Haryana. Besides Kamboj, India have also brought in Sai Sudharsan and Shardhul Thakur as other changes. However, the biggest question is what made Gill and Gambhir to show trust in Kamboj over an experienced Prasidh Krishna, who played the first two games in Leeds and Birmingham. In the two games for India A, Kamboj might not have got load of wickets, but the right-arm pacer was impressive in containing the flow of runs against England Lions. Kamboj took five wickets in two games. But what impressed Gill and Gambhir was Kamboj's ability to score runs while batting at no.9. In the second unofficial Test against England Lions in Northampton, Kamboj scored 51 not out in 86 balls an forged a 149-run stand (179 balls) for the unbroken eighth-wicket stand along with Tanush Kotian. Kamboj's knock included five fours and a six. On the other hand, Krishna was guilty of leaking runs in both the Tests he played. In the first Test in Leeds, Krishna conceded 220 runs for his five wickets, while he gave away 111 runs for one wicket in Birmingham. In all the three Tests so far, India have struggled with their lower-order batting and Kamboj's inclusion gives Indian management a confidence with the bat to add those extra runs.
