Garner takes reins for Kangaroos' AFLW flag defence
Jasmine Garner has added another accolade to her glittering AFLW career, named captain of North Melbourne for their premiership defence this season. Garner will lead a new-look leadership group of six players in 2025, after flag-winning skipper Emma Kearney stepped down last week. The 31-year-old Garner is a seven-time All-Australian and has won the Kangaroos' best-and-fairest award five times. "I never thought I would captain a team one day," Garner said. "To be voted in by my teammates, it's really special. "When I think of my whole career, it's definitely something I'm most proud of." Garner will be supported as vice-captain by fellow inaugural North Melbourne player and premiership teammate Ash Riddell. Experienced defender Libby Birch, Nicole Bresnehan, Bella Eddey and Jasmine Ferguson round out the leadership group. "Ash leads the way with her standards year in year out," Garner said. "You can't question what she does, we all look up to her. "Alongside the other leaders, I'm really looking forward to working with them." Kearney led the Kangaroos from their first season in 2019 and played a crucial role in last year's breakthrough grand final triumph. The 35-year-old has long been admired as one of the competition's best leaders. "Kearns has helped build my leadership along the way," Garner said. "I know she's still going to be there to lean on and I'm just excited that she doesn't have to worry about captaincy. "She can just go out there and play footy." North Melbourne's premiership defence starts in a round-one clash with Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on August 16. How Roos plan to mend ‘habitual' Wardlaw
North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson says he won't take 'take the beast out' of hard-nosed midfielder George Wardlaw despite yet another concussion setback. Wardlaw sustained a third concussion in 12 months during the Kangaroos' disappointing loss to Hawthorn on Saturday. He will enter the concussion protocols but could sit on the sidelines for longer as North Melbourne prioritises the health of its young star. Wardlaw was seemingly in good health at training on Tuesday, completing some running away from the main group. Clarkson says every footballer runs the risk of injury and has no intention of changing the way Wardlaw attacks the contest. 'He's been asked this question plenty of times, what do you change with him? He's habitual, it's the way he plays his footy,' he said. 'You just hope over time he gathers a bit more awareness, a little bit more luck, a bit stronger in his body, perhaps. 'I try to take the beast out of the way that he plays and you won't have the same George Wardlaw. 'That's the risk we all have when we play the game, hope he gets a good run of luck.' Wardlaw was not the only Roo away from the main group on Tuesday, with Luke Parker absent from the track. Clarkson says the short turnaround between the Hawks and Western Bulldogs this Thursday is forcing the Roos to limit the training of a few sore bodies. North Melbourne trains again on Wednesday and will put several players through a fitness test ahead of selection. 'We've got a whole heap of guys because it's such a short break, we trained today and most of those guys were able to do something,' Clarkson said. 'It's just getting them moving a bit, we'll train tomorrow and then select our side tomorrow night. '(Parker) is one of those guys that we need to test tomorrow, some of them didn't come out on the track at all today or they did very, very light duties on the side. 'They'll present tomorrow with another 24 hours of recovery (and) see how we go. We'll have a couple of certainties out … George and Jack Darling. 'We'll test a couple others tomorrow, see how they pull up and if they're no good we'll just go in with fresh guys.'

Bramley-Moor Dock to host rugby league world champions
Everton's new Bramley-Moor Dock stadium has been named as a host venue for rugby league world champions Australia's tour of England this autumn. The 52,888-capacity ground will stage the second Test of the three-game series on Saturday. 1 November, with Wembley stadium and Headingley in Leeds as venues for the other two Kangaroos' visit to England will be their first since 2003, with all matches set to be shown live on the BBC, and will be the first non-footballing event at Everton's new multi-purpose club's current home Goodison Park staged four Australia matches in the early part of the 20th century, including the Kangaroos' first-ever tour of England in new home, which held its second test event last weekend, is also one of 10 venues across the UK and Ireland chosen to host games during Euro 2028.
