Kurdish student in Finland turns coffee waste into clean energy
Also in World From refugee to educator: A Kurd's mission to empower children in Germany Author uses literature to document Kurdish tragedies US reiterates support for SDF integration Ukraine: Three years of Devastating war A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A Kurdish environmental engineering student is working to turn used coffee grounds into clean energy as part of a university project promoting zero-waste solutions. 'We want to collect that coffee and give it another life,' Bahez Kareem, a Finland resident originally from Sulaimani, said during Rudaw's Diaspora program that aired on Friday. 'Instead of it becoming a burden on the environment, we turn it into a clean energy source that is a good alternative to traditional fuels.' According to scientific research, the coffee industry generates over eight million tonnes of waste coffee grounds annually. This waste emits methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and produces toxic leachates that can harm aquatic ecosystems, said a study published in Global Challenges. 'At university, we were asked to prepare a project for creating a 'model city' - a city where no type of garbage or waste is thrown away and all materials are reused,' said Kareem. 'During our research, we discovered that in Finland, which has only 5.5 million inhabitants, an enormous amount of coffee is consumed and most of its waste goes to waste,' he added. His project is named "T Seven Percent Coffee Waste and Biodegradable Ingredients." Hoping their project will attract attention and be successful, Kareem said, 'This is just the beginning, and in the future you will hear more news about us.' Turning waste into clean energy helps reduce the volume of trash thrown into landfills, cuts methane emissions, and supports climate goals by promoting resource efficiency and advancing the circular economy. Kareem, originally from the Sharbazher area and born in Sulaimani, said he moved abroad to pursue his education. 'Initially, I was in Germany for a year, then I was accepted at a university in Finland. And now I have been settled here for nearly six years,' he said.

I interviewed Kamala Harris before election but it was so weird it was destroyed – I didn't want blame for election loss
'REALLY, REALLY BAD' I interviewed Kamala Harris before election but it was so weird it was destroyed – I didn't want blame for election loss KAMALA Harris gave an interview before the election that was so "confusing and weird" it was immediately deleted, according to the social media personality who hosted it. The then-Democratic nominee's appearance on "Subway Takes", where guests admit their favourite hot take, would alone have lost her the election - so she and the host agreed to erase it. He told Forbes in an interview posted to TikTok: "Her take was really confusing and weird, not good, and so [we] mutually agreed we shouldn't publish it." Kareem claims the Democratic Party reached out to him to say that Kamala and Tim Walz, her vice-president running partner, were "really interested" in being on the show. The presenter said he got "lucky", because he "didn't want to be blamed for her losing". Kareem is a Muslim, meaning he can't eat pork-based products and has never eaten bacon - making it a particularly odd choice for Kamala to go with. Kareem previously said his main reason for not airing the interview was because he didn't want to upset the Muslim community by spending air time on trivial matters when something as serious as the Israel-Hamas war was ongoing. Dare Kareem (19) proves the Drogheda winner on his first start, delivering the only goal against Galway
The 19-year-old striker was handed a first full start by Kevin Doherty and repaid his manager handsomely with the goal that secured victory. For Doherty, this was his first managerial career win over John Caulfield. Since the Court of Arbitration of Sport decision which saw Drogheda expelled from the Uefa Conference League, they have now played two home games and won both 1-0. They remain a hard side to keep down. Kareem's winner arrived four minutes into the second half. It was Drogheda's one and only clear-cut opportunity in 98 total minutes of play. Owen Lambe's throw into the box was met once and then twice by Galway defenders, but neither cleared the ball. The striker – a St Patrick's Athletic academy product – showed lightning reactions to hook the ball beyond Evan Watts. Galway had dominated the first half but made nothing count. Stephen Walsh, back in favour now, had two shots on goal while wing-back Jeannot Esua mishit an effort. Canadian-born Trinidad and Tobago international Malcolm Shaw had an early goal ruled out by the offside flag too. If those of a Galway persuasion thought Kareem's goal might bring about a second-half onslaught, they were wrong. Luke Dennison was hardly troubled for the remainder and did not fall foul of the new eight-second rule affecting goalkeepers who like to hold onto the ball for a little longer than they should. DROGHEDA UNITED: Dennison; Quinn (Bolger, 70), Keeley, Harper-Bailey; Lambe, Brennan (Farrell, 72), Heeney, Kane; Markey; Oluwa, Kareem. GALWAY UNITED: Watts; Buckley (Brouder, 58), Cunningham (Horgan, 90+4), Slevin; Esua, Borden (Bolger, 72), Hurley (Piesold, 58), Burns; McCarthy; Walsh, Shaw (Tollett, 58).

Dare to dream - Debutant Kareem the Drogheda United match-winner
Drogheda United's Dare Kareem had the majority of the Sullivan & Lambe Park crowd forgetting all about one departed hero as the debutant scored the winner to beat Galway United. Supporters have been left reeling with Douglas James-Taylor's departure to Bohemians and with Warren Davis nursing a injury, Kareem stepped into the breach and duly delivered for his team. The 19-year-old was brought into the club in the off-season, predominantly as an Under 20s player, but injury problems for Kevin Doherty has meant he has had plenty of involvement with the first team. But with United's major attackers - Josh Thomas is also injured – unavailable, this was his first real opportunity to make a mark since his arrival from St Patrick's Athletic. His 49th minute winner is Drogheda's second home win since their European expulsion. Three points against the Tribesmen – Doherty had never beaten John Caulfield as a manager before Friday night – could go a long way towards securing European football in 2026. Galway themselves were missing major players who have been so important to their recent successes. Moses Dyer has left for Cambodia while Patrick Hickey was missing once again. Stephen Walsh, the veteran striker, has benefitted in the last couple of games and is once again in favour, as far as the starting XI goes. He teed up Jeannot Esua for a shot which the Cameroonian made a mess of. Walsh himself had two first half shots – one blocked and one off-target – while recent arrival Malcolm Shaw had an effort ruled out for offside in the early stages. Galway were dominant but unable to transfer that to the scoreboard. It was a failure they were left to rue. Drogheda had offered virtually nothing as an attacking threat in the first half but that soon changed. By the 49th minute, they were ahead. Owen Lambe's long throw was not cleared sufficiently and Kareem's outstretched leg hooked the ball into the net. It was an instinctive finish from the centre-forward and a demonstration of what his manager felt he might bring to proceedings. Galway supporters might have felt that would light a fire under Caulfield's side to find an equaliser. It didn't however, as the hosts outperformed them after the break. The away side hardly had a shot on goal in response. For Drogheda, victory was a fine riposte to last week's drubbing in Derry and keeps them in European contention. On a memorable night, the home fans even have a new hero. Drogheda United: Luke Dennison; Andrew Quinn (James Bolger, 70), Conor Keeley, Aaron Harper-Bailey; Owen Lambe, Ryan Brennan (Shane Farrell, 75), Luke Heeney, Conor Kane; Darragh Shane Farrell; Thomas Oluwa, Dare Kareem. Galway United: Evan Watts; Garry Buckley (Killian Brouder, 58), Greg Cunningham (Colm Horgan, 90+4), Rob Slevin, Jeannot Esua, Vincent Borden (Aaron Bolger, 72), Denis Hurley (Axel Piesold 58), Bobby Burns; Edward McCarthy; Stephen Walsh, Malcolm Shaw (Cillian Tollett, 58).
