Chiefs coach reveals the embarrassing error Patrick Mahomes made as a rookie in Kansas City

For all of Patrick Mahomes ' success with the Kansas City Chiefs, it can be easy to forget that the soon-to-be 30-year-old quarterback was once a backup struggling to learn the position behind starter Alex Smith. Drafted 10th overall out of Texas Tech in 2017, Mahomes arrived in Kansas City with experience in then-Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury's spread offense, but still lacked some basic fundamentals. 'He was yelling his first play into the huddle,' Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy remembered, as quoted by ESPN. 'The defense could hear the play. We had to tell him to chill out.' Since then, Mahomes has guided the Chiefs to five Super Bowls, winning three, all while making teammates forget about the clumsy, overexcited rookie he once was. Asked about Mahomes' growth, running Kareem Hunt explained that the Chiefs signal caller is a significantly better player now than when they first played together in 2017. 'Just how much he knows the system now and just seeing how he's able to recognize defenses and call the plays on the fly if he needs to,' Hunt told ESPN. 'He's grown a lot in that aspect.' Mahomes believes his growth reflects a better knowledge of himself and how he responds physically to the punishment of a 17-game season. 'More than anything I have a better understanding of my body,'' Mahomes said. 'I know the extra amount of recovery stuff I need to do, how to feel my best on a day-to-day basis. 'Obviously I probably bounced back a little bit quicker when I was younger but at the same time, I have a better plan and a better standard that I hold myself to on a day-to-day basis so I can be ready for every single practice.' Statistically, Mahomes is coming off a slight down year after passing for just 3,928 yards – his lowest output as a starter – and 11 interceptions, which was more than all but 11 passers in 2024. Still, he once again led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl, and although Kansas City fell to Philadelphia, Mahomes once again enters the season as one of the favorites to lift the Lombardi Trophy at season's end.

Kansas City Chiefs 90-man roster by jersey number: No. 29, RB Kareem Hunt

The Kansas City Chiefs reunited with veteran running back Kareem Hunt last season after initially selecting him with the No. 86 pick in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. When his first stint with the Chiefs ended, Hunt went East to play for the Cleveland Browns from 2019 until 2023. Hunt signed with Kansas City as a free agent on September 16, 2024, after star running back Isiah Pacheco sustained an injury that left the Chiefs' backfield in need of a consistent rusher. Upon returning to Kansas City, the former Toledo Rockets standout put together one of the best regular season campaigns of his career, racking up 728 yards on 200 carries and scoring seven touchdowns in 13 total games played. What jersey number does Kareem Hunt wear? Kareem Hunt currently wears the No. 29 jersey for the Kansas City Chiefs. How much money will Kareem Hunt make in 2025? According to Hunt will receive a base salary of $1,255,000 in addition to a prorated signing bonus of $110,000 and a per-game roster bonus of $100,000 in 2025. His total cap hit will be $1,482,353 next season. Top Kareem Hunt highlight

Chiefs Running Back Details Learned Lessons Of Rookie Season

Chiefs Running Back Details Learned Lessons Of Rookie Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kansas City Chiefs running back Carson Steele had a solid rookie season with Andy Reid's offense despite being a bit-part player. Advertisement An undrafted free agent, Steele had to do things the hard way to begin his NFL career, and he made good progress during the offseason, eventually making the 53-man roster. Steele would total 183 rushing yards from 56 attempts in the regular season, but didn't feature in the playoffs with Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco leading the way. But for Carson, going from where he was to making the active roster, he learned a few things. "It's one of those things where you're thinking you're okay and then you got to wait and kind of figure things out," Steele said in an interview with Nate Spangle. "I always try to tell people that if you make a mistake, doing it at 100%, they're going to be mad, but they aren't going to be upset. When you're making mistakes and half-assing it, that's when something is going to need to change." Kansas City Chiefs running back Carson Steele (42) is tackled by Atlanta Falcons linebacker Arnold Ebiketie (17) during the second half at Mercedes-Benz Zanine-Imagn Images That mindset of not 'half-assing" it got Steele on the field in 2024, and where he did show some flashes (72 yards from 17 carries vs. Atlanta). Advertisement Now, though, as he enters his second offseason, it will be tough sledding getting touches with Pacheco, Hunt, and now Elijah Mitchell and Brashard Smith all vying for reps. But as we know, Steele is no stranger to adversity, having gone from an undrafted rookie to making the final roster, but Carson knows that he might have to replicate his efforts again this offseason to ensure he stays on the Chiefs roster in 2025. Chiefs' Kareem Hunt Seen As 'Luxury' Player In 2025

Chiefs' Kareem Hunt Seen As 'Luxury' Player In 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs had to dip into the free agency well after Week 2, following the injury to Isiah Pacheco, and that search led them to Kareem Hunt. Advertisement With no minicamp or training camp, Hunt was signed off the couch, and was put to work by Andy Reid to be the bellcow back as he rushed for 728 yards and seven touchdowns. Not a speed burner, but a bruising runner, Hunt was the one whom the Chiefs relied on in short-yardage situations to keep the chains moving, and he did. As such, for ESPN's Bill Barnwell, in naming luxury players in 2025, Hunt sees his name mentioned as the short-yardage back. "Hunt wasn't great, but the one thing he did well was convert in short yardage," Barnwell wrote. "He went 15-of-18 (83.3%) in those situations, one year after he went 15-of-20 (75%) in those same spots for the Browns. Advertisement "Doing that for an offense that relied heavily on converting third downs and wasn't willing to run Patrick Mahomes on sneaks was a critical piece of the puzzle for Kansas City. With Pacheco back to full health and free agent Elijah Mitchell joining the mix, it would be a surprise if the Chiefs relied on Hunt in a featured role again in 2025. However, he could still be a useful third running back in the right situations." Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt (29) is congratulated by quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15)Kyle Terada-Imagn Images Hunt likely won't see his 200+ carries from last year in 2025 with Pacheco back healthy and speed merchant Elijah Mitchell now in the building. But there will still be a place for this hammer to punish defenses when the Chiefs only need a couple of yards to keep the chains moving. Kareem proved last season he can be the lead back if needed, but this upcoming season, the hope is that he won't need to be leaned on in such a way, and thus be fresher and more explosive. Advertisement However, when those short-yardage situations pop up, it will be Hunt's number that gets called. Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt appreciates offseason workouts: 'Prepared me more'

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt appreciates offseason workouts: 'Prepared me more' During his voluntary OTA press conference, Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt expressed his excitement about the upcoming season and the opportunity to experience full offseason workouts. "It's going to definitely help me get my body in shape (and) get used to hitting and grinding out those long, tough days in training camp," said Hunt, "That's what helps you get through the season." Last season, Hunt led Kansas City in rushing with 728 yards and seven touchdowns. He didn't join the Chiefs until Week 4 last season after being signed due to Isiah Pacheco's injury. "I'm definitely going to be able to come in guns blazing," said Hunt. "I'm excited that I get to get my legs underneath me and actually do football stuff and work drills and go against defensive guys and stuff like that so that just prepared me more instead of just coming (in), not being tackled or touched." Hunt's full camp with Kansas City will be essential for the new season. He may not be the same player who earned All-Rookie and Pro Bowl honors in 2017, winning the rushing title with 1,327 yards, but he's an effective, experienced option in the backfield.
