New passenger bus service launching in Saskatchewan
A Flixbus can be seen in this file photo. (Supplied) A new bus service is coming to Saskatchewan – promising to give passengers another transportation option to and from Alberta. FlixBus will begin its intercity services on July 1. Daily service will connect Calgary, Edmonton, North Battleford, Saskatoon, and Regina. 'This is a big moment for Saskatchewan,' spokesperson Karina Frayter said. 'For years, people here haven't had a simple way to travel across provinces without a car or expensive flights. We're changing that. Whether you're a student heading to university, someone visiting family, or just looking for an affordable way to explore Canada, this route opens the door.' Pickup points include the Kahkewistahaw Gas & Convenience in Saskatoon and the Victoria Square Shopping Centre in Regina. According to the company's website, Flixbus entered the Canadian bus market in 2022 and has expanded its operations across Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Alberta. Access to bus transportation in the province fell off after the dissolution of the STC in 2017. Greyhound pulled out of western Canada a year later – and permanently shutdown operations across the country in 2021. Flixbus, described as a travel-tech company, was founded in 2013 in Munich, Germany. It currently operates in more than 40 countries on four continents. The new service will compete with Rider Express, a company that offers a similar bus service.

These are North America's top-searched summer destinations for 2025, says study
This summer, Americans are dreaming big—but traveling smart. According to new data from Flix North America (the folks behind FlixBus and Greyhound), the hottest destinations for summer 2025 are a mix of urban icons, bucket-list landmarks and wallet-friendly hubs. The twist? Budget-conscious travelers are skipping the TSA lines and boarding intercity buses instead. Released just as summer officially kicks off, Flix's ranking of the most-searched destinations gives a real-time snapshot of where the cool kids (and savvy savers) are headed. No surprise, New York City leads the list. But following closely behind are cross-border favorites like Toronto and Niagara Falls —proof that Americans are keeping it (mostly) continental while still chasing big vibes. Other high-ranking picks include Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas and Orlando, all connected by Flix's expanding bus network. It's essentially a greatest hits of summer travel, without the sticker shock. 'Travelers are looking for convenient, flexible ways to see more this summer without breaking the bank,' said Karina Frayter, head of communications at Flix North America. 'Whether it's visiting family, exploring a new city or checking out a bucket-list destination, we're seeing strong interest across our growing network.' That echoes a new Deloitte survey showing 53-percent of U.S. consumers plan to take a vacation this summer—up from 48-percent last year—even as financial anxieties linger. Instead of canceling entirely, travelers are editing: shorter trips, closer locales and cheaper ways to get there. Flix's data backs it up. Major hubs like Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia and Atlanta are all high on the list—places that are easy to get to, packed with summer fun and (crucially) well-served by intercity bus routes. This year's top travel takeaway is simple: think big, travel smart and maybe leave the car keys at home. The European-owned company, which bills itself as 'North America's fastest-growing intercity bus service,' expanded again in 2023 with a London-Detroit line. That route, an extension of the Toronto-Detroit service, includes stops in Scarborough, Hamilton, Brantford, Chatham-Kent and Windsor. Other companies have entered the market to meet demand. In 2021, St. Thomas-based BadderBus partnered with Megabus, a division of Coach Canada, to offer London-Toronto service. That same year, Mississauga-based Onex Bus also launched a Toronto route. bbaleeiro@

Hop on this bus to head directly to Moraine Lake from Calgary
Those wishing to take in the majestic beauty of Moraine Lake this summer can easily access the popular tourist destination thanks to a new route from FlixBus. The intercity bus service will take people from several Calgary locations to the Moraine Lake Road parking lot, directly adjacent to the lake. Previously, the FlixBus bus went to Canmore, downtown Banff and Lake Louise Village, but not the lake. Moraine Lake, named among the world's most beautiful places by Condé Nast Traveler, is only accessible from June to October and a shuttle is required to access it. 'This extension to Moraine Lake reflects both our rapid growth across Canada and our commitment to making world-class destinations more accessible to more people,' said spokesperson Karina Frayter in a Friday news release. 'Banff is a bucket-list region that draws travelers from across the globe, and with shuttle options to Moraine Lake often fully booked months in advance, we saw an opportunity to provide a more convenient, reliable and affordable way to get there.' The new extended route starts on June 2, operating twice daily, seven days a week.
