Over 500 personnel to be deployed in Aluva for ‘Karkidaka Vavu Bali'

The district administration and the Ernakulam Rural police have made extensive arrangements for the forthcoming 'Balitharpanam' (paying obeisance to ancestors) on the occasion of 'Karkidaka Vavu' on July 24. The Rural police will deploy around 500 police personnel in Aluva. A meeting to review the arrangements was chaired by District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) M. Hemalatha at Aluva on Saturday. More cops will be deployed along the bus stand, railway station and metro stations. A control room will be set up at Aluva Manappuram and will function round the clock. Traffic regulations will be enforced to prevent congestion, while CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic locations. The district administration is in the process of making elaborate arrangements at Aluva Manappuram, Perumbavoor Chelamattam Sree Krishna Temple, and along the banks of the Periyar in Kalady, taking into account the incessant rain. A review meeting attended by Anwar Sadath, MLA, and Additional District Magistrate Vinod Raj was held on Saturday. Arrangements will be made to offer 'bali' at Aluva Adwaithasramam from the morning. The offering of bali at the Perumbavoor Chelamattam Sree Krishna Temple will begin at 1 a.m. and continue till the afternoon. Special KSRTC services will be operated from the Angamaly and Perumbavoor depots. The Irrigation department will monitor the water level in the Periyar at frequent intervals and take necessary precautions. The District Medical Officer has been directed to deploy staff and ambulance services to handle emergencies. Fire and Rescue Services personnel will be deployed to avert accidents. The KSEB has been directed to arrange temporary power supply and ensure the presence of additional staff. Steps have been taken to ensure drinking water availability in the area, and the Food Safety department will monitor the quality of food and beverages sold in nearby shops. The Fort Kochi Sub-Collector and the Muvattupuzha Revenue Divisional Officer have been assigned to oversee the arrangements.

Devotees question fee collection for immersing ashes in Periyar

Kochi: Travancore devaswom board (TDB) began imposing a fee on devotees who immerse ashes, a ritual followed by Hindus after cremation, in Periyar River adjacent to Aluva Mahadeva Temple. The decision to impose a fee of Rs 50 is being questioned by devotees. Fee system came into effect on July 1. On average, around 50 people from various parts of the state arrive at Manappuram daily to perform this ritual, whereas the number increases on religiously important days. Devotees have started questioning TDB for imposing a fee for immersing ashes in a river that falls under the jurisdiction of irrigation department. At the same time, people's representatives feign ignorance about TDB decision. "We heard it from news reports. We don't have any other details. Moreover, the issue doesn't come under the purview of Aluva municipality," a municipal councillor said. It is learnt that TDB has set up a counter at the site to collect fee using temporary staff. Though TOI tried to contact temple administrative officer over phone, the official didn't respond. According to devotees, TDB takes responsibility for cleaning bathing ghats and riverbanks during major events such as Shivaratri and Karkidaka Vavu, but riverbanks remain dirty with garbage on normal days.
