Dragons forward cops brutal news as Cowboys player learns NRL fate over incident

The NRL has slapped Cowboys forward Karl Lawton with a two-game ban after a hip-drop tackle on Jaydn Su'A that may ended the Dragons forward's season. Lawton was hit with a grade two dangerous contact charge for the incident which forced Su'A from the field during the second half of the Cowboys' 38-32 win in Townsville on Friday night. The victory saw Todd Payten's side leapfrog the Dragons into 11th spot on the ladder and kept their slim finals hopes alive. But it has come at a cost for the Cowboys, with Lawton banned for the second time this season for a tackle that had eery similarities to one that injured Roosters star Siua Wong last month. League Immortal Andrew Johns called for a crackdown on 'third man in tackles' after Lawton's previous offence on Wong, and the Cowboys star found himself in hot water again during a similar incident on Friday night. Lawton was placed on report for the 51st minute tackle that saw him target Su'A's legs after the Dragons forward was already wrapped up by two North Queensland tacklers. The force of Lawton's body weight fell on Su'A's leg and he went down in immediate pain, before being helped from the field by Dragons medical staff. It later emerged that Su'A had suffered a suspected MCL injury to his knee, with the Dragons' medical staff suggesting he could be sidelined for four to six weeks. Given the Dragons only have six games left in the regular season, and sit six points outside the top-eight, there is the distinct possibility it is a season-ending injury for the former rep forward. And it's another major blow to the injury-ravaged Dragons' slim hopes of playing finals footy, despite coach Shane Flanagan insisting after the game that they have not given up on the possibility. Lawton's suspension is also a major setback to North Queensland's hopes of finishing the regular season inside the top-eight, having snapped a worrying run of form with victory on Friday night. Lawton miss the Cowboys' next two games against the Sharks and Eels with an early guilty plea, and faces a third game out if he fights the charge and loses. Subsequent scans revealed there was no damage to the bone and that Hughes would not require immediate surgery but he still has to undergo an MRI scan to test for further damage. However, the second-placed Storm are hopeful Hughes will be able to return after a six-week absence, putting the reigning Dally M Medal winner in line for a comeback in their final game of the regular season against Brisbane in round 27. 'Shouldn't be able to': Andrew Johns calls for NRL crackdown amid flurry of bans

Andrew Johns' anger around a third-man-in tackle from Karl Lawton has been vindicated after the Cowboys star was handed one of the most serious charges of the year. Eels pair Ryley Smith and centre Will Penisini are also both facing stints on the sidelines after being hit with dangerous throw charges from their victory over the Titans in the NRL on Sunday night. But it was Lawton's tackle on Siua Wong earlier on Sunday that left league 'Immortal' Johns fuming in commentary for Channel Nine and the Roosters forward facing up to six weeks out with a knee injury. Lawton was hit with a grade 3 dangerous contact charge for the first-half incident that forced Wong from the field after he was held upright by two defenders, before Lawton came in and collected him directly on the knee. Scans on Monday confirmed a medial ligament tear for the Roosters forward, meaning he's set to spend at least a month on the sidelines. The Cowboys forward was not even penalised for the tackle during the 42-8 loss, despite referee Ashley Klein and bunker officials having time to review the incident. Fortunately for the Roosters, five-eighth Sandon Smith was cleared of a serious knee injury after hobbling off in the second half. "It's dangerous, I hate it," Johns said. "If you have two players in the tackle, and momentum is pretty much (stopped), that third man shouldn't be able to go in like that. "A couple of years ago we saw Liam Knight get hit from behind and it pretty much destroyed every ligament in his knee. The player cannot see it coming. And what's come into the game is they back into the tackle so they can see the third man coming in and spearing at the knee. "And what's happened with that happening is we have crushers coming into the game, because of players turning and twisting looking for that third man." Lawton's charge is only the second grade-three for any offence this season, after Dolphins veteran Felise Kaufusi copped the same punishment for dangerous contact on Cowboy Tom Duffy last week. Only Manly prop Tof Sipley has been given a higher grading this season after being referred straight to the NRL judiciary for a hip-drop tackle that injured St George Illawarra's Mat Feagai in April. Lawton's clean record means he can accept a two-match ban with an early plea or risk a third game on the sidelines if he elects to fight the grading. Penisini's lifting tackle on Beau Fermor was the worst of the two and he's facing a three-week suspension for the 78th minute incident that saw the Gold Coast player land dangerously on his head. The Eels centre was sin-binned for the tackle and faces an extra week on the sidelines than his Parramatta teammate, due to his prior record. Smith's lifting tackle on Phillip Sami was more innocuous but still ultimately dangerous for the Titans player, with the Eels hooker facing two games out unless he decides to fight the charge. with agencies

‘I absolutely hate it': Karl Lawton cops ban for tackle that injured Siua Wong, Eels duo in hot water for dangerous throws

Cowboys hooker Karl Lawton is one of three players facing multi-week suspensions after he was charged for a tackle that will likely sideline Roosters young gun Siua Wong for at least a month and left Immortal Andrew Johns incensed. Lawton was hit with a grade 3 dangerous contact charge for the first-half incident that forced Wong from the field with a suspected MCL injury to his left knee. Wong was held upright by two defenders before Lawton came in and collected him directly on the knee. 'I hate that third man in, I absolutely hate it,' Johns said in commentary. The Bunker looked at the incident but didn't advise the referee to award the Roosters a penalty, with Wong the latest player from the club to suffer an MCL injury. Teammate Nat Butcher suffered a similar injury earlier this year as a result of foul play that wasn't penalised on the field but resulted in a two-game ban for Penrith's Mitch Kenny. 'I don't know about that one. I looked at it quickly and moved on,' Roosters coach Trent Robinson said after the game. 'We've had some MCLs this year, I think that's our fifth. We've had lots of six-week (injuries), with MCLs taking out five of them, which has been really difficult. 'That's up for someone else (to judge the penalty), but it's been a tough one for MCLs for us this year.' Lawton will miss two games if he takes the early guilty plea but risks an extra match if he fights the charge and loses. The Eels are also counting the cost of Sunday's win over the Titans with two players facing bans for dangerous throws. Centre Will Penisini is looking at 3-4 weeks on the sidelines after he was hit with a grade 2 dangerous throw charge for a lifting tackle on Beau Fermor in the final few plays that led to a stint in the sin bin. Teammate Ryley Smith can accept a two-match ban for a tackle that landed Phil Sami in an ugly position.
