Labour Minister and Dharwad district in-charge Santosh Lad has said that youth have a significant role to play in nation building and they should cultivate the habit of questioning while remaining independent of political affiliations. Inaugurating the Karnataka University Scheduled Castes Research and Postgraduate Students Association and Employees Association at Karnatak University in Dharwad on Monday, he asked youth to remember that the nation did not exclusively belong to the BJP, the Congress or any other political party. 'Everyone must come together to build the country. Positive thoughts must flourish in society. Students should avoid getting entangled in controversies and focus on academics to contribute meaningfully to the nation's progress,' he said. Elaborating on Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Mr. Lad said that through the Hindu Code Bill, Ambedkar ensured property rights for women and prioritised their educational and economic empowerment. Mr. Lad emphasised that Dr. Ambedkar's ideals must be embraced by all not just by members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the backward classes Underscoring the need for students to be careful about social media, he asked them to seek the truth behind what is seen on social media. 'Through study and understanding, real facts must be identified. When great leaders are spoken against, we must strongly condemn such acts,' he said. Amaresh Yatagal stressed the need for re-examining the contribution and history of Valmiki and Beda communities. He said that folklore literature revealed the history of the Beda community and references to the Beda community are also found in the histories of the Surpur kings and Sangolli Rayanna. Registrar (Evaluation) Nijaligappa Mattihal said that many communities have been deprived of education for centuries and they now have access to the world of letters and are slowly progressing socially. Along with making efforts for the development of these respective communities, one should remember to contribute towards building a united India, he said. President of Scheduled Castes Employees Association of the university Krishna Naik presided over the function. Valmiki Prasannananda Swami of Rajanahalli and Jnana Swaroopananda Swami were present. Achievers were honoured during the programme.

Dharwad: Prof AM Khan assumed charge as the new vice-chancellor of Karnatak University here on Monday. Acting VC prof RL Hyderabad handed over the charge to prof Khan. Syndicate members Robert Daddapuri, Sham Mallanagoudar, Mahesh Hullannavar, Basavaraj Gorawar, registrar (evaluation) NY Mattihal, heads of departments and senior officers greeted the new vice-chancellor. Daddapuri presented a copy of the Constitution of India. Prof Khan, an alumni of Karnataka Science College and Karnatak University, was serving as the professor of electronics in Mangaluru University before being appointed as the vice-chancellor of Karnatak University.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Delivering a special lecture on 'Financial inclusion and its impact on the Indian economy' organised jointly by the department of economics, Karnatak University, Canara Bank Chair, and the Centre for Multi-Disciplinary Research and Development (CMDR) at Karnatak University here, he emphasised that understanding financial literacy is crucial for societal development. "Between 2015 and 2020, there has been an increase in financial growth and GDP. The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (crop insurance scheme) has proven highly beneficial to Indian farmers, especially those facing crop losses due to unpredictable weather conditions. Therefore, agricultural insurance schemes like these are of great importance," he said. Swamy added that the public must be made aware of the special facilities offered by banks. "All nationalised banks are organising several programmes to promote financial literacy. People must also understand the value of money and should take advantage of life insurance schemes introduced by banks," he said and stressed the importance of citizens voluntarily engaging with banks and building direct financial relationships. CMDR director Prof Basavaprabhu Jirli said a financially strong household contributes to a strong nation. "Even when many countries faced global financial crises, India remained relatively unaffected. He further added that many prominent banks originated in Karnataka's coastal region, making the state a model in the banking sector. He also pointed out that the Jan Dhan Yojana has been immensely beneficial to the people and emphasised the proper implementation of govt schemes for public welfare. "People should actively participate in financial inclusion," he added. Presiding over the program, Prof B H Nagoor said that financial schemes play a key role in poverty alleviation. Life insurance schemes have been launched for the poor, and banks have rolled out schemes worth crores of rupees to support them. Currently, about 80% of the country's population is digitally literate, he noted. Professors Manoj Dolli, Nagaraj Mugadur and A R Kulkarni among others were present.

AM Khan appointed as new VC of Karnatak University

Dharwad: After almost nine months, the Karnatak University, state's second oldest university, has a permanent vice-chancellor. Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot, who is also the Chancellor of the state varsities, has appointed Prof Airani Mohammad Khan as the new vice-chancellor of KU. According to the order issued on Saturday, the Governor stated that Prof A M Khan has been appointed after his name was shortlisted by the search committee. He will be holding the office for a period of four years or until he attains the age of 67, whichever is earlier. Before being appointed as the vice-chancellor, Prof Khan was serving at Department of Studies and Research in Electronics at Mangalore University. Biomedical image processing, embedded system design, image/ data processing, algorithm development, IC fabrication technology, computer networks have been his research areas. Prof Khan is likely to take charge on July 7 (Monday). There was a growing demand from the faculty and students to appoint a regular vice-chancellor after Prof KB Gudasi attained superannuation in Sept, as administrative work was getting affected. However, the govt appointed three acting vice-chancellor to look into the administrative affairs of the KU. Three-day international conference on mathematics begins in Dharwad

Srinivasa Rao Pentyala of Department of Mathematics and Computing of Indian Institute of Technology (School of Mines), Dhanbad, has said that in the recent days neural network, artificial intelligence, and applied mathematics were gaining popularity and mathematical models were gaining prominence. He was delivering the keynote address at the inauguration of the three-day 'International Conference on Mathematical Analysis and Applications', organised jointly the Department of Mathematics of Karnatak University and Pawate Institute of Mathematical Science in Dharwad on Saturday. Prof. Rao elaborated on various developments in the field of mathematics and application of mathematical models. Senior principal scientist and professor at Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (ACSIR), Pune, Kiran A. Kulkarni narrated his experiments in teaching and said that mathematics was gaining prominence in the recent years especially because of the researches and the applications. Inaugurating the conference, acting Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, Dharwad (KUD), R.L. Hyderabad lauded the initiative taken by the department in getting mathematicians of international repute to the conference and facilitating sharing of knowledge. Former Vice-Chancellor of KUD H.B. Walikar said that the establishment of Pawate Institute of Mathematical Sciences was aimed at facilitating study of computer science, mathematics and statistics under a single roof. A huge building was being built to house the institute, by mobilising ₹11 crore from internal resources of the university. However owing to technical problems, the building had not been completed yet, he said, urging Syndicate members to take up the issue with the government to get the building completed. Registrar of KUD Arvind Mulimani said that in the era of challenges, new softwares were useful in analysis of mathematical models. On the occasion, the dignitaries released the souvenir brought out to mark the occasion. A total 72 mathematicians including 22 from various countries are participating in the international conference.
