Waste corp seeks new green nod for Verna plant

Panaji: After failing to get an environmental clearance (EC) to set up an integrated solid waste management and waste-to-energy plant at Verna for two years, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) decided to speed up the process and file a fresh application before the state environment impact assessment authority (SEIAA). This plant would be the fourth plant in the state. There were some technical issues which led to the delay in the EC, but it has now been decided to clear all the queries and approach the authority for a fresh EC, a senior official said. The GWMC said that a waste-to-energy plant will be set up at Verna at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore and will generate 16MW electricity and 38MW heat while processing 250 tonnes of waste per day (TPD). The project is the first of its kind in Goa, and since the non-biodegradable waste is continuously generated, the project will sustain itself, a senior govt official said. The electricity department will procure the power, and the steam generated at the plant will be supplied to industries to be utilised in manufacturing processes, the officer said. 'The objective of the plant is to generate electricity and steam from the non-biodegradable waste by adopting environment-friendly processes, and the outcome of the project includes long-term management of non-biodegradable waste without harming the environment,' the officer said. The non-biodegradable waste is stored in sheds in the panchayat jurisdiction, where the recyclable fraction of non-biodegradable waste is recovered and sent for recycling. The non-recyclable waste is stored in the shed and is collected by the GWMC. The corporation then bales this non-recyclable waste and sends it to various cement plants in Karnataka to be used as a fuel alternative in kilns, thus making it refuse derived fuels (RDF). 'The cost of transportation of such RDF is almost Rs 1,000 per tonne. The state is fully dependent on the Karnataka-based cement plants for the disposal of RDF,' the senior official said. He said that if there is a direction in the near future by the Karnataka state pollution control board for the stoppage of transportation of interstate waste, it will lead to the accumulation of RDF in water bodies and thereby affect aquatic life and also the flora and fauna. 'So, in order to have our own facility in Goa, it is proposed to establish a 250 TPD waste-to-energy plant,' he said. The plant at Verna will cater to the waste generated in Mormugao taluka and some parts of Salcete taluka. The plant will be set up on an area of 1 lakh sqm, and the environment impact study for the plant has already been done.

Karnataka: ED attaches ₹4 cr worth assets in Aishwarya Gowda 'fraud' case

The Enforcement Directorate on Monday said it has attached assets worth about ₹ 4 crore as part of a money laundering investigation against a Karnataka-based woman, who is alleged to have cheated a number of people by threatening and claiming proximity to "high profile" politicians. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested the woman -- 33-year-old Aishwarya Gowda -- earlier in April. Congress leader D K Suresh, the younger brother of Karnataka deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar, appeared before the federal probe agency and recorded his statement in this case on Monday in Bengaluru. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested the woman -- 33-year-old Aishwarya Gowda -- earlier in April following searches against her, Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni and some others. The provisionally attached properties include flats, building and land worth ₹ 2.01 crore apart from cash and ₹ 1.97 crore vehicle, the ED said in a statement. An order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was issued on June 19 for attaching these properties, it added. The total value of the attached properties is ₹ 3.98 crore, the ED said. The ED did not specify in the statement as to whom the attached assets belonged to. The money laundering case against Gowda, her husband Harish K N and some others stems from multiple FIRs filed by Karnataka Police against them. The allegation in the FIRs is that Gowda, her husband and others have entered into a "criminal conspiracy" to defraud and cheat several individuals by taking gold, cash and funds through bank accounts promising high rate of returns, the agency said. However, it said, that the accused neither returned the money nor gave the promised return and also "threatened" the investors of dire consequences in case of further pursuance of the matter by "claiming her proximity to various high profile politicians". Gowda is alleged to have used the name of D K Suresh, a former MP, and claimed to be his sister. Suresh had denied knowing her and filed a police complaint against her. He spoke to the press in Bengaluru before appearing before the agency. "The ED issued a notice asking me to appear before the investigation officer at 11 am. So, accordingly, I am reaching there. They had sought some information. So, today I am meeting the ED officers with my lawyer," Suresh said. He said that this case was unrelated to him. "I am unable to understand why the notice was served to me. I was the one who had lodged a complaint with the police commissioner against the woman, who had orally said that she is my sister. I have no connection with the cheating case," Suresh said.

'He's Doing The Best He Can': Manjrekar Backs Prasidh's Selection In Playing XI

Last Updated: Prasidh was preferred over Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh in India's playing XI for the ongoing first Test of the five-match series against England. Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar on Sunday (June 22) backed Indian team management's decision to include Prasidh Krishna in the playing XI for the ongoing first Test against England in Leeds. According to Manjrekar, who has now donned the hat of an expert and commentator, Krishna is India's No. 2 seamer, and he is bowling better than Mohammed Siraj. He feels the Karnataka-based fast bowler is doing the best he can, and if he manages to get a couple of wickets, then it will help him build confidence, and he might get better. 'If you see Prasidh Krishna in this Test match as opposed to the Test he played for India earlier in South Africa, he's looked the best to me. Yesterday (Saturday, June 21), although he didn't quite get the wickets, he was still India's number two seamer. He was better than Mohammed Siraj, certainly more potent than Shardul Thakur. So, India made the right choice and went for him; this is Prasidh Krishna doing the best he can. With time, if he gets a couple of wickets and builds confidence, he might just get better and better. I will not be critical of Prasidh Krishna with the way he's bowled—he has done everything he possibly could to the best of his ability," Manjrekar said on 'Match Centre Live' after the first session on Day 3. After failing to take any wicket for India on Day 2 of the Leeds Test, Prasidh helped India get off to a flying start on Day 3, as on the first ball of his second over of the day, he dismissed Ollie Pope. The right-handed batter was caught behind by Rishabh Pant after making 106 runs from 137 balls with the help of 14 fours. Krishna, who last played a Test match for India against Australia in Sydney from January 3-5, 2025, managed to retain his place in the red-ball squad for the England tour by producing a super show for the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. He played 15 matches for the Shubman Gill-led side in IPL this year and picked up 25 wickets, which was the most by any bowler. First Published: June 22, 2025, 19:46 IST
