8 new power substations to be built in Belagavi dist

Belagavi: In an effort to promote non-conventional energy sources, eight villages in Belagavi district have been selected under the Greenfield Energy Corridor project. As part of this initiative, 110kV power substations and solar power projects will be established in these villages. This decision was made during a meeting of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) held in Bengaluru on July 3, and the same was informed to the managing director (technical) of Hubli Electricity Supply Company on Saturday. The eight villages are Appachiwadi (Nippani taluk), Pamaladinni (Gokak taluk), Saundatti Jackwell (Saundatti taluk), Ganikoppa (Bailhongal taluk), PY Hunashyal (Mudalagi taluk), Muragod (Saundatti taluk), Paschhapur (Hukkeri taluk) and Kenchanahatti (Belagavi taluk) have been selected for the scheme, according to a statement issued by district minister Satish Jarkiholi. The scheme will be implemented across two phases in Karnataka. These eight substations in Belagavi are part of Phase 2, which has a total estimated cost of Rs 1,036 crore. Through this, KPTCL aims to establish a Green Energy Corridor in the state, supporting the generation of non-conventional energy, especially solar and wind power. Once the new substations are operational, the load on existing substations is expected to reduce significantly. With rising electricity demand due to an increase in electric pumps and other reasons, the new substations will help meet the increased power needs.

Oriana Power wins Rs 212 crore order from KPTCL for 50 MW/100 MWh battery storage project in Karnataka

By Aman Shukla Published on July 14, 2025, 10:02 IST Oriana Power Ltd has received a significant Letter of Award (LOA) from Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) to set up a standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project with a cumulative capacity of 50 MW/100 MWh. The project, located at the Shahapur Taluk Yadagir substation in Karnataka, will be implemented under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model. This ₹212.31 crore project (inclusive of GST) will be executed over a 12-year period from its scheduled commissioning date. Oriana Power is expected to complete the project within 15 months of signing the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA). It will also receive a Viability Gap Funding (VGF) of ₹27 crore, based on the current estimated project cost. The BESS installation is designed for two-cycle daily charge-discharge operations and will help enhance grid stability, reduce blackout risks, and improve power efficiency in the region. KPTCL leads electricity safety education initiative

Udupi: A spirited initiative unfolded in the rural landscapes of coastal Karnataka as the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), teamed up with TLM and MESCOM, to deliver an electrical safety awareness campaign at the Government Higher Primary School in Nallur of Karkala taluk in Udupi district. Launched on June 27, 2025, as part of the National Electrical Safety Week, this event aimed to educate young minds and address safety concerns in underserved areas. The central message disseminated in the campaign was to raise awareness about electrical risks, and fire outbreaks due to electricity. The National Electrical Safety Week, driven by the National Safety Council of India with backing from the Central Electricity Authority, kicks off each year on June 26 to tackle these hazards head-on, making events like this a vital part of the national strategy. This program delivered practical advices such as avoiding circuit overloads and spotting unsafe electrical goods. Local educators hailed the approach, noting that these young learners could spread safety knowledge within their families and communities. By harnessing the school's community influence, it fills a void in rural safety efforts, which often center on urban areas. With the National Electrical Safety Week ongoing, the Karkala success story could pave the way for similar efforts across Karnataka and beyond say KPTCL officials.

CESC launches green drive to mark World Environment Day

Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) on Friday launched a green initiative as part of World Environment Day. Free saplings were distributed to over 8,000 officers and staff across five districts. They were told to plant two saplings each. The campaign was formally inaugurated at CESC colony in Kesare here. A sapling plantation drive was jointly organised by CESC, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), and a federation of local organisations. CESC Chairman and MLA Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda urged the citizens to join hands in preserving the environment. 'Our daily activities are harming the environment, despite conservation efforts. A healthy environment is directly linked to our well-being. Our ancestors led healthier lives even without modern facilities. Now, there is a need for living in harmony with nature,' he said. CESC Managing Director K.M. Munigopal Raju said all CESC offices have been instructed to organise week-long environmental programmes. Each office must plant a minimum of five saplings. Over 50 mahogany saplings will be distributed to the staff, who can plant them in their workspaces.
