With over 2.8 lakh stray dogs in the city, the BBMP has invited FSSAI-registered food service providers to feed 500 dogs each across all eight city feeding drive comes amid growing concerns over public safety. Between January and August 2024 alone, Bengaluru reported 18,822 dog bite address the issue, the BBMP has launched a pilot project to implant grain-sized microchips in stray dogs, helping monitor their territory, sterilisation, vaccination status, and say the city's stray dog crisis is fuelled by inconsistent sterilisation, poor vaccination coverage, and uncontrolled feeding near open garbage sites, according to several media conditions often lead dogs to form packs, increasing the chances of aggression and making them harder to capture, leaving the problem to spiral CRITICISM OF THE POLICY TO FEED STRAY DOGS?Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, a vocal critic of stray dog management policies, questioned the BBMP's Rs 2.88 crore feeding scheme, calling it a "huge health and safety hazard".He reiterated his stance that strays should be moved to shelters and not left to roam who claims India has over 6.2 crore strays, has even raised the issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and suggested the formation of a national task force. Meanwhile, Congress MLAs, including CM Siddaramaiah's advisor, have criticised the government for lacking funds for infrastructure, making dog-feeding spending a fresh the move has earned praise for its compassion, it's also drawn sharp criticism over civic priorities and public OVER BRUHAT BENGALURU MAHANAGARA PALIKE PLANHere's how people have reacted to the announcement."The horrendously misplaced priorities of the Congress government in Karnataka! First photo – 56,244 kids are malnourished in Kalyana Karnataka. Second photo – chicken and egg rice for Bengaluru's stray dogs! What an irony," one user person wrote, "Here we were hoping the government would address the rising stray dog population. Instead, BBMP is launching a Rs 2.8 crore scheme to feed them rice, chicken, and eggs daily across Bengaluru. What could go wrong?"Critics argue that providing easily available and nutritious food will increase survival and breeding rates, deepening the stray dog crisis. Feeding dogs at fixed locations, they warn, may also encourage pack behaviour, making them more territorial and aggressive, particularly towards children, pedestrians, cyclists, and street post noted that regular feeding might condition dogs to gather in large crowds, turning them into a greater public nuisance. "I'd have supported this if BBMP had simultaneously announced a plan to map the fed dogs and run a sterilisation and vaccination drive. Instead, they're about to worsen the problem," it said."Congress government in Karnataka rolls out daily meals for street dogs. Rs 2.8 crore tender was floated by BBMP to serve meat-based meals across all eight city zones, roughly 600 to 700 dogs per zone. Chicken and egg rice for stray dogs! Many questioned the use of taxpayer funds for feeding strays when numerous citizens are still struggling for necessities. The initiative has triggered broader discussions about governance and were far more blunt in their criticism: "Utter nonsense. They're feral dogs, not strays. They should be culled without mercy. It's a tragedy that rabies still claims thousands of lives every year. If only the Karnataka government and BBMP had an iota of common sense."- EndsTrending Reel

150g chicken, 100g rice: Bengaluru municipality rolls out Rs 3 crore diet plan for street dogs, Bengalureans say, 'please add desserts too'

In a first-of-its-kind move, Bengaluru's civic body BBMP is set to serve up chicken and rice, not to school kids or hospitals, but to stray dogs. With a price tag of Rs 2.9 crore, the daily feeding plan aims to calm aggressive street dogs and improve public safety. But while some call it a thoughtful welfare move, others are howling in protest. — ANI (@ANI) Starting soon, 5,000 stray dogs across Bengaluru's eight zones will receive one carefully prepared meal every day. Each meal, costing Rs 22.42, includes: 150g chicken (protein) 100g rice (carbs) 100g vegetables (minerals) 10g oil (fats) Together, this provides 465–750 kcal, perfect for a 15kg dog's daily needs. According to BBMP, these meals will be served at designated feeding points, with each zone hosting 100 to 125 such spots. Vendors will be hired and held responsible for cleanliness at these locations. BBMP believes feeding can reduce dog aggression, help monitor stray populations, and even aid in anti-rabies efforts. 'This is more than a welfare act,' said a senior official. 'It's a public safety strategy.' Live Events Officials say feeding will help track and access dogs more easily, making it simpler to carry out vaccinations and sterilisation, key steps in eliminating rabies by 2030. Public Reacts: From Praise to Pothole Memes Social media exploded with reactions. Some users praised the move, especially those already feeding strays out of their own pockets. 'Protein' Prabhu, who feeds 30 stray dogs and monkeys daily, called it a 'huge relief'. 'I spend around Rs 2,500 on dog food every day. BBMP's help will mean a lot,' he said. Others, however, questioned the timing and priorities. 'My father was chased by strays recently. Shouldn't BBMP focus on sterilising them first?' asked one resident. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram also suggested relocating strays to shelters instead of feeding them on the streets. Meanwhile, X (formerly Twitter) lit up with jokes. One user posted: 'Bengaluru stray dogs eat more protein than North Indians.' Another wrote: 'Dogs from across India are migrating to Bengaluru. No language barrier for them!' A Plan With a Purpose Despite the criticism, BBMP officials are standing firm. Special Commissioner Vikas Kishor explained that feeding will be focused in areas with high dog bite cases or low volunteer activity. 'We're not feeding all 2.8 lakh strays,' he said. 'Just around 2%, for better control and care.' The civic body is also encouraging citizens to chip in, financially or as volunteers. 'It's a shared responsibility,' said Kishor. Cannot form govt in Tamil Nadu without backing of national party: MP Karti Chidambaram

COIMBATORE: No party can form a government in Tamil Nadu without the support of a national party, said Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram, and reaffirmed the unity and strength of the INDIA bloc in the state. Speaking to reporters at Malumichampatti in Coimbatore on Tuesday, Chidambaram reviewed the Congress' grassroots position and preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections. "The DMK-led alliance is politically strong in Tamil Nadu, and the Congress is gearing up as a powerful force," he said. While he acknowledged that the AIADMK still holds a significant vote bank, he criticised its renewed alliance with the BJP. "Grassroots AIADMK workers are unhappy. After severing ties before the Lok Sabha elections, why rekindle the alliance now? Many are questioning this," he added. Commenting on coalition dynamics, Chidambaram stressed that Congress is not in a position to demand more seats than the BJP in an AIADMK-led front. "We are caught between not being in power or in the opposition. It's a complex situation," he admitted. "Congress hasn't been in power in Tamil Nadu since 1967, and that's unfortunate," he added. On national issues, he welcomed the Indian Army's response to the recent terror attacks in Pahalgam and backed Chief Minister Stalin's move to write to fellow chief ministers on the governor issue. He clarified that P Chidambaram's recent remarks were misunderstood, and affirmed that the INDIA bloc remains robust.

"Incumbent upon govt to call Parliament session": Congress' Karti Chidambaram

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) [India], May 20 (ANI): The Congress continues to raise doubuts over the chain of events leading to cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on Tuesday demanded a special parliamentary session to be convened to brief the nation about the 'security failure' during the recent terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians. 'We support Operation Sindoor unconditionally. We understand that all the facts can't be laid out on the table immediately because of issues of national security. However, it is incumbent upon the government to call for a short session of the Parliament and to inform the nation through the house about the events post-Pahalgam, including what led to the security failure (in Pahalgam),' Chidambaram told ANI. He further stated that asking questions was natural in a functioning parliamentary democracy while acknowledging that some questions may not be answered openly due to national security issues. Chidambaram asserted that it was necessary for the centre to make a statement in the Parliament. 'Some legitimate questions will be asked. We understand that some can be answered openly, and some can't be. However, questions will be asked, and that's natural in a functioning parliamentary democracy. It is necessary that the government comes and makes a statement on the floor of the house...A two-day session can be held where the Prime Minister and Defence Minister can take the house into confidence,' he added. Earlier, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government, alleging that the recent move to send all-party delegations across the globe reflects a 'momentary, hypocritical, and opportunistic' shift in India's diplomatic approach. In a post on X, Jairam alleged that the BJP's 'poisonous politics at home' has damaged India's global image. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sharpened its attack on Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi following his remarks accusing External Affairs Minister Jaishankar of being silent on how many aircraft the Indian Air Force lost during Operation Sindoor. The ruling party has accused the Congress MP of speaking the 'language of Pakistan' after his remarks. (ANI)
