Oman, Belarus ink deals to boost industrial and digital cooperation

MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Belarus signed three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) in Muscat aimed at strengthening cooperation and facilitating technology transfer in the automotive and smart technology sectors. The first MoU, signed between Karwa and Belarusian firm Amkodor, establishes a joint framework for industrial and commercial collaboration, enabling both parties to expand into markets across Oman, the GCC, and Africa. The second MoU, also involving Karwa and Belarusian company MAZ, focuses on cooperation in the manufacture and distribution of transport vehicles, specialised equipment, and trailers. It includes joint market studies, marketing initiatives, and the development of a full production line at the Karwa Automobile Plant in Oman. The agreement also facilitates the transfer of technical expertise, training programmes, and technical support to build the capacity of national talent. Representing Karwa at the signing was CEO Dr Ibrahim bin Ali al Balushi, with Aleksey Zanduk, Deputy General Manager of Marketing at Amkodor, and Alexander Atroshik, Deputy Commercial Director at MAZ, signing for their respective firms. The third MoU, between the Omani National Engineering and Investment Company (ONEIC) and Belarusian firm Delivery Software, targets the deployment of cutting-edge digital solutions in Oman and the wider region. Areas of collaboration include ICT innovation, AI applications, fintech, and other digital services that enhance automation and operational efficiency. The agreement was signed by Engineer Aziz Al Hasani, ONIC's General Manager of IT and E-Business, and Andrey Sudakov, CEO of Delivery Software. The ceremony was attended by Abdul Salam bin Mohammed al Murshidi, Chairman of the Oman Investment Authority, Dr Abdullah bin Masoud al Harthy, Honorary Consul of Belarus to Oman, and several senior officials from both nations. These agreements stem from efforts by the Omani-Belarusian Joint Committee to strengthen strategic partnerships, promote knowledge exchange, and position Oman as a hub for high-quality investments and future-focused projects. — ONA

Transport ministry oversees phased trial of electric autonomous taxis

DOHA: The Ministry of Transport has announced that Mowasalat (Karwa) began operational trials of Level 4 autonomous electric taxis in selected areas of Qatar, covering both tourist and service routes. In coordination with the Ministry, Karwa will conduct route mapping over the coming period in preparation for a two-phase pilot launch of the autonomous taxis. The first phase will involve trial runs without passengers, monitored by a specialized team. The second phase will see full-scale testing with passengers but no driver, continuing through the first quarter of next year. The trials aim to evaluate the technology's readiness and operational efficiency, alongside establishing regulatory frameworks and preparing the necessary infrastructure - part of Qatar's broader future smart mobility initiatives. This new pilot builds on the positive outcomes of previous autonomous electric bus trials and aligns with the Autonomous Vehicles Strategy developed by the Ministry. The strategy promotes the integration of advanced, eco-friendly smart technologies into Qatar's public transport network. Each autonomous taxi used in the trials is equipped with six long- and mid-range cameras, four radars, and four LiDAR units, enabling precise detection and navigation control during operation.

Qatar launches self-driving robot taxi trials ahead of 2026 launch

Qatar has officially launched operational trials of self-driving robot taxis. The Level 4 autonomous electric taxis are a landmark initiative led by Mowasalat (Karwa) in coordination with the Ministry of Transport. The trials are currently underway in selected touristic and service areas and are a key part of Qatar's Autonomous Vehicles Strategy and broader vision for smart, sustainable mobility. Qatar self-driving taxis The pilot follows the success of previous autonomous electric bus trials and reflects the country's commitment to integrating AI-driven, zero-emission transport solutions into the national network. The trial will unfold in two distinct phases: Phase 1: Driverless trial runs without passengers, monitored by a specialised team to assess technical readiness. Phase 2: Full-scale public testing with passengers but no driver, running through the first quarter of 2026. Each autonomous taxi is equipped with six cameras, four radars, and four LiDAR units, enabling advanced detection, real-time decision-making, and safe navigation in complex urban settings. In addition to evaluating the technology, the pilot will support the development of regulatory frameworks and the necessary infrastructure to accommodate next-generation mobility solutions in Qatar.

Ministry of Transport set to oversee robotaxi test run by Karwa in tourist & service routes

The Ministry of Transport announced on 27 June 2025 that it is set to oversee a test run by Mowasalat (Karwa) of level-4 electric robotaxis in specific areas in Qatar, primarily on tourist and services routes. Karwa will be working closely with the MOT over the coming period to scan and prepare the proposed routes. The test run of the electric robotaxis will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will be conducted under the supervision of a specialized team with no passengers on board. The second phase will be totally autonomous with passengers on board. The test runs will continue through Q1 of 2026 to allow for monitoring and assessing how prepared the technology is and how efficiently it operates, in addition to setting out relevant regulatory frameworks and preparing the supporting infrastructures, within the framework of future smart mobility initiatives in Qatar. Karwa robotaxi test run builds on the positive outcome of the previous test operation of autonomous e-buses, consistent with the plans of the Autonomous Vehicle Strategy developed by the MOT. This contributes to maximizing benefiting from advanced technologies, considering the latest smart and eco-friendly systems of public transportation. Each robotaxi is equipped with 6 medium and long-range cameras, 4 radar sensors, and 4 lidars for best detection and control while in motion. Source & cover image credit: Ministry of Transport

How to Explore Doha Without a Car: A Public Transport & Walking Guide List – Experiencing the history and culture of Doh

Although plenty of cars, including taxis, are available for hire in Doha, the public bus service known as Karwa or Mowasalat offers a seamless end-to-end service for locals and visitors using various Doha resorts. As most of the fleet consists of electric buses, your bus commute is almost noiseless and mostly environmentally friendly. Most contemporary visitors look forward to such sustainable experiences, and travelling by public transport is also a good chance to gain local insights. Karwa bus service operates modern air-conditioned electric buses in and around Doha, including several key routes to/from Hamad International Airport, and it covers other parts of Qatar. Visitors need to buy a Karwa smartcard with different values and packages, readily available at airport vending machines, Doha bus station and numerous merchant outlets in the city and beyond. Select the smartcard based on your travel requirements and length of stay. These bus fares are reasonably priced, starting at 3 Qatar Riyals (QAR) for trips within Doha and 4 QAR and above for trips outside Doha.
