Nearing time of peace in Malaysian music industry: Karyawan welcomes M. Nasir's call for amicable negotiation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Artistes Association (Karyawan) welcomes the call by Datuk M. Nasir, Chairman of the Music Authors' Copyright Protection (MACP), urging all parties in the music industry to pursue peaceful negotiations in resolving the ongoing conflict involving the Malaysian Artistes Association Karyawan, 3P Muzik Malaysia, and the three collective management organisations (CMOs) — MACP, PPM, and RPM. "We agree that consultation and negotiation are the best course of action, and legal proceedings should be the last resort, as they may jeopardise the sustainability and future of the country's creative practitioners," said Karyawan president Datuk Freddie Fernandez in an interview with The Star. He added that Karyawan acknowledges that many of the issues stem from a lack of mutual understanding among stakeholders within the national music ecosystem. "Therefore, we call for a comprehensive dialogue involving all relevant parties — including arts associations, royalty collection bodies, authorities, and key stakeholders — to find a fair and realistic resolution. "Most importantly, all parties involved, who form the backbone of our national music industry, must stand on a solid foundation based on their respective roles. Only through this approach can the music industry grow harmoniously, without imbalances that may disadvantage any party," said Freddie. "We sincerely hope that all parties can come together to find a solution that is not biased but instead benefits the entire music industry in a balanced and equitable manner." Karyawan, also said Freddie, firmly believes that only through open democratic dialogue, coupled with a spirit of tolerance and cooperation, can we rebuild the national music industry and ensure its long-term sustainability. Earlier on Monday, Malaysian music legend Nasir said that he sees peaceful negotiations are the best solution to the issues concerning the three Collective Management Organisations (CMO). Nasir, a popular singer, composer and producer, said during the press conference for the "Datuk M N46ir Cipta 3 Concert " that the issue has also been brought to the legal level and he cannot comment much on the case. "This matter has been brought to the legal level. But negotiations are the best solution," he said in local media reports. Meanwhile, the President of 3P Muzik Malaysia, Aris Ariwatan expressed disappointment with the refusal of three CMOs in the music industry who did not agree with the Copyright Guidelines for Collective Management Organisations 2025 under the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO). "It is difficult to say, but it is also difficult not to say. Because the three CMO chairmen can be said to be our friends and our members. Not anyone else. "But I would like to ask everyone involved not to go too far to the point of appearing rude to disregard the government guidelines. The guidelines settle so many issues that musicians have had in the past," he said. The media conference held recently in collaboration with the Karyawan was held to find a solution with the MACP, PPM and RPM, who were seen not complying with the new ruling made by the government on the issue of royalty collection.

#SHOWBIZ: Man Senoi, wife consider taking action against 4U2C

KUALA LUMPUR: Composer Man Senoi and his wife, Mama Rap, are considering legal action against the group 4U2C and related parties involved in organising the "WE 4U2C Live in Concert" in Petaling Jaya, scheduled for next September. Man Senoi, whose real name is Othman Masri, 72, claims to be the copyright owner of 4U2C's songs. He said that neither 4U2C nor the concert organisers have approached them to discuss the ownership of the songs intended for performance at the concert. "To be honest, no one from their side has said anything about this matter yet. I'm still waiting; it's not me who is at fault," he said. "There hasn't been any news from the concert organisers yet. However, they informed me they'd be in touch but I haven't heard anything." Speaking at a press conference on royalty collection organised by Karyawan at the Malaysia Tourism Centre (MATIC) yesterday, Man Senoi added, "For now, we are not taking legal action; let them do a concert if they want. After that, perhaps we will take action with all the evidence we have." Man Senoi also issued a reminder to the hip-hop group, which was once under his recording company, Zman Production, to ensure any concerts are staged through the correct channels. "If they want to do a big concert, use common sense. Whose songs do you want to play?" he questioned. "The 'sound recording' they want to use for the performance is the property of Zman Production; no one else can use it." He further clarified, "We are not members of Public Performance Malaysia (PPM), so they need to contact us. I just want them to understand that we should do all this through the right channels." "If everyone agrees, we have no problem. Why is it so difficult to meet us? Put your ego aside because all this will affect the concert," he stressed. Meanwhile, Mama Rap, whose real name is Ramziah Mohamed Noor, 62, claimed that 4U2C has become like an "enemy" since their last collaboration in 1993. "We just wanted them to come and meet us before the concert. We have not been in contact with any of them," she said. "They and we are already like No.1 enemies. The last time, in 1993, they just left our company; it's been over 30 years since we last saw each other. They were with Zman Production for three years from 1991 to 1993," she recounted. It was previously reported that Man Senoi and Mama Rap had asserted copyright ownership of 4U2C's songs, but neither he nor his wife was informed about the upcoming concert. Man Senoi was also reported to have questioned how the group intended to hold a concert if the 25 songs planned for performance were the property of their company, Zman Production.

#SHOWBIZ: Karyawan: Stop exploiting artistes for ratings and monetary gain

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Artistes' Association (Karyawan) has urged the public not to be alarmed by a series of fake videos containing "negative news" about artistes, including prominent figures such as Datuk M. Nasir and Datuk David Arumugam. Its president, Datuk Freddie Fernandez, said that these videos were created by irresponsible parties who falsely depicted these artistes as seriously ill or impoverished. He said: "None of these claims are true. This is a very worrying trend on social media. The people who created such videos are sick, fabricating stories about respected and popular artistes just to gain views and make money." Fernandez added that the videos employed fake voices and images generated by AI technology. "More worryingly, there is also content that, at first glance, appears to be shocking news about artistes, but when clicked, it redirects viewers to pages selling various products." Fernandez highlighted that the names and images of the artistes were used without their permission, violating their privacy and human rights. "This is a most immoral, fraudulent exploitation of artistes' rights. It can create public confusion and panic, besides damaging the reputation of artistes." Fernandez said that Karyawan has called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to monitor and block fake content, as well as prosecute those responsible. "Platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook need to be more strict in monitoring content uploaded on their platforms," he said. "We encourage the public to report fake videos. This will lead to the immediate suspension or blocking of the culprits' channels. It is our responsibility to ensure that our digital space is healthier and free from scams." Fernandez urged all artistes to defend the dignity of their peers. "And to all Malaysians, do not easily believe everything that goes viral, for a lot of it could be fake news. Let's work together to put a stop to malicious individuals who slander artistes."

'Action need to be taken fast, people must stop exploiting artistes for ratings and monetary gains', says Karyawan of malice that is threatening Malaysia and the region

The Malaysian Artistes' Association (Karyawan) has asked members of the public not to be alarmed over a series of fake videos circulating freely which carry negative news about many our leading artistes including big names such as Datuk and Datuk David Arumugam. Some of these videos created by these irresponsible parties paint a sad picture of these top artistes, including personal issues, sickness and in some cases even falsely reporting the death of the artiste concerned. The trend is not new in Malaysia. Such issues have cropped in many countries especially in South-East Asia including th likes of the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. And in many occasions it is the artistes that have to pay the heavy price and some had been even picked up by the authorities for questioning on such issues. 'None of these (such fake news and malice intent) could be further from the truth. We are becoming increasingly concerned about this trend that is becoming more and more prevalent on social media. "These videos are created by those who are willing to fabricate false stories about our artistes in order to chase views and money' said Karyawan President Datuk Freddie Fernandez. 'These videos also use fabricated voices and images from AI technology, to create catchy video titles that are supposedly exclusive, when in fact they are nothing but mere fabrications.' 'More worryingly, there is also content that at first glance seems to be shocking news about artistes, but when clicked on, it takes viewers to pages that sell various products. 'The names and images of the artistes are used without their permission, which is clearly a violation of their rights. "This is not only immoral, but a form of blatant fraud and exploitation of artistes. It also confuses the public, makes fans panic, and damages the reputation of the artistes themselves, leading to losses in potential income for the artistes concerned' he added. 'We call on authorities such as MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) to monitor and block fake content like these from going viral. Platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Facebook also need to be more strict in their monitoring to ensure the veracity of the content uploaded on their platforms. 'We also encourage the public to actively report fake videos like these. If many people report to the operating platform, their channels could be suspended or blocked immediately. We must all take responsibility so that our digital space becomes healthier and free from scams such as these.' In some cases in recent times, many scammers have also been using AI to copy voices of famous actresses and actors, top singers and celebrities, to scam people from buying their products which has led to some people losing huge amounts of money. 'To fellow artists and art activists, let us unite to defend the dignity of our fellow artistes. "And to all Malaysian citizens – do not easily believe everything that goes viral. Filter before sharing. In this era of AI, we are going to be faced with more and more fake content such as these. Let's work together to put these irresponsible people out of business," said Freddie.
