75-year-old dies, one missing after boat capsizes on Wisconsin River, cops say

National 75-year-old dies, one missing after boat capsizes on Wisconsin River, cops say Two vanished when a boat capsized on the Wisconsin river, police said. One was found dead and another is still missing. Photo by the Wisconsin Dells Police Department Three people were on a boat in the Wisconsin River when the vessel capsized, and only one made it back, police said. Two were submerged under the 'volatile' waters, while one was able to swim safely to the shore, Wisconsin Dells police said on April 3. Now, rescuers are still searching for 20-year-old Francesco L. Di Filippo of Chicago days after the boat flipped, police said in an April 5 Facebook post. Luis F. Di Filippo, 75, also from Chicago, was found dead in the water on April 4, police said. The search efforts have been hindered by the dangerous waters, which have been at elevated levels since rescuers began their search, police said on April 6. In the interim, officials have covered 18 miles of the river with shoreline searches, underwater drones and other technology to search for the missing boater, police said. Family members told WFLD that Luis Di Filippo was enjoying spring break with his grandsons when the boat capsized. 'Life will never be the same without him,' Lina Schultz said about her son, Francesco. 'He was the most caring 20-year-old you ever came across. He never said no. Family always came first,' WFLD reported. Police said they believe the water levels will drop in the coming days, which could create manageable conditions for divers to search for Di Filippo. 10-year-old swept away by floodwaters found dead after search, Texas cops say

National 10-year-old swept away by floodwaters found dead after search, Texas cops say A third grade student was swept away by a flood during a severe storm, Texas fire officials said. Searchers found her dead. Screengrab from Brenham ISD on Facebook A community-wide search located the body of a 10-year-old girl after she was swept away by floodwaters during a severe storm, Texas fire officials said. The third grader, Devah Woods, vanished into the storm on May 5, which launched a dangerous hourslong search throughout Brenham, the fire department said in a Facebook post. First responders immediately began search efforts after Woods went missing, police said, but officers were also caught in the threatening floods and rescued, according to officials. 'Our hearts are broken for Devah's family, and we ask that you continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this unimaginably difficult time,' Brenham Independent School District said in a May 6 news release. Authorities from up to 24 agencies scoured bodies of water in the area for the girl, officials said, but the severe weather made efforts difficult. Woods' body was found around 10 a.m. on May 6, authorities said. 'In the face of heartache, Brenham has shown what it means to come together—with strength, compassion, and unity,' fire officials said. Brenham is about a 75-mile drive northwest from Houston. ‘Father figure' sexually assaults girl while dating her mother, Michigan cops say

National 'Father figure' sexually assaults girl while dating her mother, Michigan cops say A 34-year-old was convicted of sexually assaulting his girlfriend's teenage daughter, Michigan prosecutors said. Getty Images/iStockphoto A 34-year-old man was found guilty of sexually assaulting a teenage girl while he dated her mother, Michigan prosecutors said. 'Questionable acts' by David Ryan Sampson of Flint occurred while the girl and her mother lived with him, Genesee County prosecutors said in an April 7 news release. The girl was under 10 years old when this behavior began, officials said. When she was a teen, Sampson would give the girl marijuana and alcohol, then sexually assault her, prosecutors said. The assaults occurred at the man's home and in public areas such as a lake. County Prosecutor David Leyton said the mother's boyfriend 'took advantage of a young girl who had looked up to him as a father figure,' according to the news release. The situation came to the forefront in 2022, when a friend's father overheard the victim confide in her friend about the sex acts with her mother's boyfriend, officials said. The father asked the teen, at the time sitting in the back seat with his daughter, who was involved in the assault, prosecutors said. The teen named Sampson. Authorities and the girl's mother were notified, and Sampson was eventually convicted of three counts of criminal sexual conduct involving a victim between the ages of 13 and 16, officials said. Leyton's sentencing is scheduled for May 2. Prosecutors say he faces up to life in prison. Flint is about an 80-mile drive northwest from Detroit.
