Update after Aussie icon Magda Szubanski revealed cancer battle

Beloved Aussie actor and comedian Magda Szubanski has given fans a rare update after revealing her heartbreaking cancer battle earlier this year. The 64-year-old confirmed the shocking diagnosis of stage-four Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and fast-moving blood cancer, in a social media post on May 29. Szubanski described the cancer diagnosis as 'serious' and confirmed she had begun the 'the Nordic protocol' … 'one of the best treatments available' for the disease that was randomly picked up during a breast screening. In a clip posted to Instagram on Monday, the Kath and Kim alum could be seen wearing a grey hoodie and her head now fully bald from ongoing treatment. 'Having the cancer is not all bad because, look,' she smiled as she panned over to a gifted Lego set. 'I am such an 11-year-old boy trapped in a 64-year-old lesbian's body. I don't know how that happened, it just is what it is,' she continued. 'Getting so bored now,' she concluded. In the caption the comedian added the gift - a model Land Rover vehicle - will keep her busy for a bit. 'Tricky with chemo induced numbness in fingertips but … I've planned ahead and ordered a building kit with pliers and finger protectors,' she said. The video has received over 92,000 likes in just 15 hours, including from fellow stars Kylie and Dannii Minogue, Lisa Wilkinson and Rove McManus. In her clip earlier this year she assured fans she was being 'lovingly cared for by friends and family'. 'My medical team is brilliant and I've never felt more held by the people around me,' she said. 'I'll be lying very low while my immune system takes a hammering. 'This is an obscure cancer and was only diagnosed incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up. 'To be honest, I've been feeling pretty ratshit for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and – voila! 'So the take away is – get tested and listen to your body! 'For now, just know I'm in good hands, good spirits – but I reserve my human right to be a cranky old moll,' she said. According to the Cancer Council, numbness in hands or feet is a common side effect of some types of chemotherapy drugs. The sensation is called peripheral neuropathy and may last a few months after treatment finishes or permanently.

Tricky with chemo induced numbness in fingertips but… I've planned ahead and ordered a building kit with pliers and finger protectors!! GOOD TIMES!!! Now all I need is a Lego Queen Elizabeth II to pop in the driver's seat.' Her post struck a chord with fans, with a slew of celebrity friends flooding the comments with messages of love and support. 'Love this! Love you,' wrote The Bachelor star Alex Nation. 'God bless you and your beautiful outlook on life and Lego. sending positive vibes,' Married At First Sight's Dave Hand chipped in and celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge shared an applause emoji. In May, Magda announced on social media she was battling Mantle Cell Lymphoma. She appeared on camera with a shaved head after beginning her treatment to fight the disease. 'Hello my lovelies. So, the head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks because I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive, very serious lymphoma,' she began. 'It is one of the nasty ones, unfortunately. But the good thing is I'm surrounded by beautiful friends and family and an incredible medical support team. 'Honestly, we have the best in the world here in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, so I feel very fortunate. 'It's pretty confronting. It is a full on. But new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time.' Magda said she has started a treatment called the Nordic protocol, which treats Mantle Cell Lymphoma by shrinking the tumours with a combination of drugs administered in five phases. It's known as the Nordic regimen based upon its clinical trial sites in Denmark and Norway. The actress explained she will be 'lying very low' due to her weak immune system. 'I won't sugar-coat it: it's rough. But I'm hopeful. I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family, my medical team is brilliant and I've never felt more held by the people around me,' she said. 'Please keep a distance though because I will be very immunocompromised. So I can't hug no more. Don't hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me! Wave enthusiastically from a safe distance and know I love you madly.' She said the cancer was discovered during a routine breast screening. 'This is an obscure cancer and was only discovered incidentally via a breast screen where they found my lymph nodes were up,' she explained. 'TBH, I've been feeling pretty rats**t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and - voila! So the take away is - get tested and listen to your body! For now, just know I'm in good hands, good spirits.' What is mantle cell lymphoma? Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that causes white blood cells to grow and multiply uncontrollably. The average age at diagnosis is 60 to 65 years and is two to three times more common in men than women. The initial symptom of MCL is usually a painless swelling in the neck, armpit, and/or groin. It is usually treated with combination chemotherapy, but other therapies include radioimmunotherapy, radiotherapy and stem cell transplants. It is aggressive and often comes back after patients go into remission.

Deputy Premier's hilarious response to Kath & Kim front page

Like any politician worth their salt, she doesn't mind a bit of a 'look at moi' — and on the back of The West Australian's front page, she may soon be rocking a tiger sweater. Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti was quick to respond to the daily newspaper's splash on Wednesday depicting the Labor Cabinet, including Premier Roger Cook, as the famously bogan characters from hit TV show Kath And Kim. It came off the back of former premier Brian Burke claiming that pre-polling in the State election showed a lack of support for Labor from a group described as the 'bogan vote'. He said it fuelled Labor's plans for a $217 million amphitheatre and race track in Burswood, rugby league and combat sports. Mr Burke said Ms Saffioti was put in charge of winning them over with 'bread and circuses'. Showing her good humour, the Treasurer took to Facebook, posting of her depiction as Kath Day-Knight: 'Loving the tiger sweater! Does anyone know where I can get one from?' Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti's reaction to The West Australian's front page. Credit: Facebook Mr Cook said that he found the front page 'entertaining'. However, he declared that he does not need polling to appeal to bogans, defending the State Government's recent focus on sport and recreation. 'We don't poll to understand what bogans are thinking,' he said on Wednesday. 'We do things which we believe are popular and in the interests of the State. 'The economic returns that are going to come from, not only the integration and the uplift that we see in motor sport events but also, of course, the (Perth) Bears. 'They're great for the economy, they're great for living in Perth and we're very proud of those policies. 'We also announced funding to do a business case for a new art gallery, we're currently upgrading the Perth Cultural Centre and upgrades to the Perth Concert Hall, so it's about doing a range of things which make WA a great place to live.' Asked if he is proud to be bogan, Mr Cook said: 'I'm Roger. I'm just who I am.' But the Premier claimed bragging rights over the two projects at the centre of the claims, ahead of his deputy, when asked if he was disappointed she was dubbed the 'bogan whisperer' ahead of him. 'I'll just put on the record that the street circuit proposal was an initiative that was undertaken when I was the minister for tourism,' he said. 'And people have been criticising me for wanting to have an NRL team in WA, we're very proud of both those things and the outcomes that will come with them.' Mr Burke is a controversial figure in State politics, with his time in office marked by the WA Inc scandal and a royal commission into business links. He served six months in jail over allegations of stealing campaign donations. His conviction was quashed on appeal. Steve Thomas was sacked as deputy Liberal leader in 2024 after it was revealed that he had enlisted Mr Burke's help to arrange a meeting with a Perth businessman. Kevin Rudd famously banned Federal Labor MP's from any contact with Mr Burke in 2007. Mr Cook said that his ministers know not to engage. 'All my ministers understand the requirement or the expectation is that they will not,' he said. 'Brian Burke is a smart guy. You don't need to have conversations with people in the party to be able to draw the conclusions that were created in the media this morning. 'That doesn't mean someone's speaking to Brian Burke, it just means that he continues to have a pretty sharp mind.'

‘Classless' reaction to Magda Szubanski's cancer diagnosis

There has been a 'classless' reaction to Magda Szubanski's cancer news on social media. One day after the Aussie comedian revealed she was diagnosed with a rare stage-4 blood cancer, her push for vaccinations during the Covid era has been brought back to the forefront. During the pandemic, the 64-year-old urged her fellow Aussies to get the Covid jabs – she even dressed up as her famous Kath & Kim character Sharon Strzelecki for an ad promoting the vaccine for the Victorian Government at the time. Now, some X users have suggested that Szubanski's Covid vaccinations are the reason for her 'turbo cancer' – an anti-vaccination conspiracy theory that alleges people vaccinated against Covid are suffering from a high incidence of fast-developing cancers. 'Very sad to hear another experimental vaccine pusher has been diagnosed with something horrible. I guess you must 'face the consequences' of your choice now?' tweeted one user, as another wondered, 'How many Covid shots did you have? I'm not saying they caused it but it's an awfully big coincidence so many people who had multiple shots of got turbo cancer.' 'Interesting how many celebrities and 'TV personalities' in Australia who publicly pushed an experimental therapeutic are now suddenly falling very ill. Someone should do a tally,' another added, as one tweeted, 'I'm sorry but that's what happens when you get paid to push lies from the WHO [World Health Organisation].' And the onslaught continued: 'She was asking for 5th booster in 2022. wonder she's at now?' 'Guess pushing certain injections didn't turn out so well for her.' 'Zero sympathy.' 'It's good to see that karma still works.' However, among the criticism were people who came to Szubanski's defence. 'As if cancer didn't exist before Covid and vaccinations. Yiu guys are seriously cooked,' one tweeted, as another told the harsh critics, 'Classless of you to post this. Why drop to the level?' 'I can't believe you are rejoicing about this,' another sympathised with the star, as one commented, 'The posts here are highly disrespectful. No need for this rubbish no matter which side of the fence you sit on. Have some decency. BTW, these things can happen to anyone. Sometimes you don't have a choice.' Szubanski revealed her private health battle on Thursday, telling her Instagram followers she was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and fast-moving blood cancer. The star described her diagnosis as 'serious' and confirmed she has begun 'the Nordic protocol' … 'one of the best treatments available' for the disease that was randomly picked up during a recent breast screen. 'Hello, my lovelies. The head is shaved in anticipation of it all falling out in a couple of weeks,' she said in her video. 'I have just been diagnosed with a very rare, very aggressive lymphoma. It is one of the nasty ones unfortunately.' 'It's pretty confronting. It is a full on one. But new treatments keep coming down the pipeline all the time … I've just got to [laughs]. What do you? What are you gonna do? 'I'm being lovingly cared for by friends and family. My medical team is brilliant and I've never felt more held by the people around me,' she said. 'I'll be lying very low while my immune system takes a hammering … To be honest, I've been feeling pretty ratsh*t for ages. So I asked for extra bloods and – voila! 'So the take away is – get tested and listen to your body! For now, just know I'm in good hands, good spirits – but I reserve my human right to be a cranky old moll.'
