Jana Kramer's Surprising Parenting Take On Sunscreen For Her Kids Might Leave You A Little Red

Jana Kramer's parenting stance on sunscreen is turning up the heat online. With summer in full swing and UV levels soaring, Kramer is making waves — not just on the beach, but in the parenting world. During an in-depth conversation about the dos and don'ts for the summer months, the actor shared her reasoning on a recent episode of her podcast, 'Whine Down with Jana Kramer,' where friend Kathryn Woodard joined her. 'I don't use sunscreen on my kids, unless it's going to be for hours out because I know they don't burn,' she said. When she does apply the ointment, Kramer confessed that she puts it on her youngest — but not her other two children. Kramer shared that her concerns center around what's in sunscreen itself, stating, 'There's so much bad stuff in sunscreen.' 'What's worse: the burn or the suntan lotion?' she mused. Kramer's question touches on the ongoing fear-mongering about 'toxins' in almost everything, from seed oil and food dyes to sunscreen — especially sunscreen. However, while some sunscreens may contain ingredients that warrant closer monitoring, experts say there are many safe options — and using sunscreen is preferable to the risk of skin cancer from the sun's rays. 'When people ask me which is riskier — sunscreen or the sun — the answer is always the same: the sun, hands down,' said dermatologist Dr. Oma Agbai to HuffPost in June. On the podcast, Kramer unapologetically doubled down with a confident, 'Come at me' to address any would-be critics. Kramer shares son Jace and daughter Jolie with ex-husband Mike Caussin. She is also mom to son Roman, whom she welcomed with her husband, Allan Russell.

Jana Kramer Shares the Reason She Sometimes Skips Putting Sunscreen on Her Kids

Jana Kramer Shares the Reason She Sometimes Skips Putting Sunscreen on Her Kids originally appeared on Parade. With summer in full swing, it's no surprise to hear that many people are all about getting their tan on — something that came up in conversation between and her friend Kathryn Woodard on her Whine Down podcast. After Kramer shared that her teenage stepson has been making her aware of the UV index (something many of his fellow teens have been a bit obsessed with since the weather started warming up this year), she and Woodard got real about their sunscreen habits involving their children. While Woodard stated that she's serious about sun protection, Kramer — who is a mom to daughter Jolie, 9, along with sons Jace, 6, and Roman, 1 — admitted that she's a bit more lax. Starting off by acknowledging that she would possibly "get a lot of hate on this," Kramer said she skips putting sunscreen on her children unless they're planning to spend the entire day in the sun. "I don't use sunscreen on my kids unless it's going to be for hours outside because I know they don't burn," she said. "And there's so much bad stuff in sunscreen that if we're not going to be out there for more than a couple hours, listen, come at me. But I'm just not putting it on." She added that she's more careful with her younger son than the older kids. "The kids, I haven't put on any on them because I'm like, they're not getting burned," she said. "What's worse, the burn, or the suntan lotion?" The Cleveland Clinic recommends that anyone who is cautious about the ingredients in sunscreen use lotion-based zinc oxide or titanium dioxide formulas. 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 Jana Kramer Shares the Reason She Sometimes Skips Putting Sunscreen on Her Kids first appeared on Parade on Jul 8, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 8, 2025, where it first appeared.

Jana Kramer Is Being Called ‘Lazy & Irresponsible' for This Parenting Move — & We Understand the Backlash

Kids come with a lot of accessories in the summer. Water bottles, swimsuits, towels, goggles, floaties, hats, and sunscreen — it's a wonder we ever leave the house! Jana Kramer just admitted to skipping one of the essentials when taking her three kids out, and people are shaming her for the 'lazy and irresponsible' parenting move. The One Tree Hill alum, who is mom to Jolie, 9, Jace, 6, and Roman, 19 months, was chatting with friend Kathryn Woodard about teens being obsessed with the daily UV index on an episode of her Whine Down With Jana Kramer podcast. During the conversation, Kramer admitted that she hardly ever uses sunscreen on her kids. More from SheKnows Bindi Irwin's Daughter Grace Is Glowing as She Twirls in the Sun in the Cutest New Video 'I'm gonna get a lot of hate on this,' Kramer said during the podcast, per PEOPLE. 'I am well aware that I should have worn sunscreen as a child. I am well aware. And I know my mom put on the Coppertone Baby, whatever SPF on me. Having said that, my mother was the generation who used no sunscreen and used the baby oil, right? If my mother gave me anything more than an 8 SPF, I would be like, 'I cannot get a tan with anything less than 8.'' Still, despite the harmful damage UV rays and sunburns can do to our bodies, Kramer doesn't feel the same pull to put sunscreen on her kids. 'I don't use sunscreen on my kids unless it's going to be for hours outside because I know they don't burn,' Kramer revealed. 'And there's so much bad stuff in sunscreen that if we're not going to be out there for more than a couple hours, listen, come at me. But I'm just not putting it on.' She added, 'I will if we're on the beach for hours and the reflection of all the things, like I'll put it on his neck, his ears — the baby — but like the kids, I haven't put on any on them because I'm like, they're not getting burned. What's worse, the burn, or the suntan lotion?' In a clip of the podcast posted on Instagram, people were quick to fill up the comments calling out the actress. 'Not putting sunscreen on your kids is downright lazy and irresponsible,' one person wrote. Another wrote, 'I once had a coworker who had skin cancer taken off her back at 20 years old! And that changed my outlook from then on-i never went back to the tanning bed again.' Others praised Kramer's no-sunscreen philosophy, claiming that it causes cancer and puts toxins in your body. But what do experts say? Research has shown that 50 to 80 percent of the skin damage induced by sun exposure occurs in childhood and adolescence, meaning that skin aging and skin cancer can be linked to childhood sun damage. Yikes! Pediatrician Dr. Edith Bracho-Sanchez previously told SheKnows that some sunscreen is better than others. For example, you want sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection, with an SPF of 30 or above, and mineral sunscreen made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as opposed to chemical sunscreens. (It's worth noting that chemical sunscreens have not been linked to adverse effects, and many of the ingredients in chemical sunscreens are also found in our moisturizers, makeup, and other skin products.) The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology (AOCD) recommends keeping children out of the sun during peak hours (11 a.m.-3 p.m.), dress them in clothes and hats that offer sun protection, and cover their exposed skin with sunscreen, starting at least 6 months of age. And, yes, even kids with dark skin need sunscreen to protect against sun damage. While we would never call another mom names or shame her for a choice she makes with her kids, we do think Kramer should listen to expert advice and consider using sunscreen on her kids. After all, they are too young to know better, and by the time they are old enough, the damage might have already been of SheKnows AP Scores Just Came Out — Here's What to Do If Your Teen's Upset About Theirs Celebrate Freedom With These Perfectly-Patriotic Americana Baby Names July 4th Printable Coloring Pages to Keep Kids Busy All Day
