Barcelona reach agreement for transfer of defender Martina Fernandez to Everton

Everton Women reached an agreement with Barcelona for the signing of defender Martina Fernandez on a long-term deal and have completed the signing of England forward Katie Robinson on loan from Aston Villa with an option to buy. The agreement for Fernandez, 20, includes a buy-back option for Barcelona who will reserve a percentage of the capital gain from any future sale. The contract is three-years long, according to sources who wish to stay anonymous to protect relationships. The Spain youth international joined Everton on a loan deal in January from the Spanish champions. She started 12 Women's Super League matches for the Merseyside club, playing the full 90 minutes in all of them and was a key player as Everton finished eighth in the WSL. For the 2024/25 season, Fernandez ranked first in the WSL for percentage of aerial duels won (80%) and was highly regarded across the league. Everton made Fernandez a key priority for their summer transfer business and have been working on securing the highly-rated defender's signature for the past few months. Everton have a history of developing loan players for top clubs, including Manchester City's Jess Park (on loan for the 2022-23 season), Chelsea's Aggie Beever-Jones (on loan for the 2022-23 season) and Arsenal's Kathrine Kuhl (half-season 2024) and Manchester United's Emma Watson (January 2025 – May). Securing Fernandez after her loan spell is considered a step in the evolution of the club's reputation as not only a place of development but a place to remain to compete. Fernandez is Everton's fourth signing in the first summer transfer window under new ownership, The Friedkin Group. She joins Spanish forward Ornella Vignola and Japan internationals Rion Ishikawa and Hikaru Kitagawa. At least three more incomings are expected. This article originally appeared in The Athletic.
