Liverpool and England footballer's daughter lands lead role as Katniss Everdeen in the first ever stage adaptation of The Hunger Games

Former Liverpool and England footballer Jamie Carragher 's daughter Mia is stepping into the spotlight as she takes a starring role in the first-ever live stage adaptation of The Hunger Games. The 21-year-old will make her debut as Katniss Everdeen - a role made famous by Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence - on October 20, at Troubadour Theatre in London's Canary Wharf. On landing the coveted part, Mia said: 'I am so excited and honoured to be playing Katniss. 'This is a dream-come-true role, and I cannot wait to see the production come to life. 'From being a huge fan of the films, I feel so lucky to be a part of the Hunger Games world, especially working with Mathew Dunster and an incredible creative team.' Meanwhile, director Matthew Dunster, best known for 2:22 - A Ghost Story, Hangmen, and The Pillowman, added: 'We searched far and wide, and comprehensively, for our Katniss. 'It is not easy to step into Suzanne Collins's amazing creation and only one actor combined Katniss's charisma and combat skills - her quiet, tough determination and her brilliant creativity, athleticism, and humour. 'We've found our Katniss in Mia Carragher, and we can't wait for audiences to see her.' The live theatrical production has been adapted by Conor McPherson from both Suzanne Collins's bestselling novel and Lionsgate's blockbuster film. Mia, a graduate of Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, also trained at The Lee Strasberg Theatre. She's no stranger to screen work, having appeared in the independent film One Night in Istanbul, Channel 4 drama The Gathering, and will soon be seen in the new Playground Entertainment series Maigret. After receiving the life-changing news, Mia FaceTimed her parents – and her mum was left in tears of pride, while dad Jamie beamed with excitement. The former Premier League star, who shares Mia and son James with wife Nicola, also took to Instagram to share the proud news, writing: 'I'm bursting with pride with you being the first on stage Katniss Everdeen @miacarragher. 'You've put so much work in over so many years to land such an amazing role, you deserve this babe. I can't wait to come & watch @thehungergamesonstage it's going to be amazing.' The former Premier League star, who shares Mia and son James with wife Nicola, also took to Instagram to share the proud news, writing: 'I'm bursting with pride with you being the first on stage Katniss Everdeen @miacarragher' The Hunger Games tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, a young woman who volunteers to take her sister's place in a deadly, televised survival competition. Battling against elite-trained rivals, she must rely on instinct, grit and courage to survive. A behind-the-scenes video posted by the show's official page featured Mia, who said: 'My name is Mia Carragher, and I will be playing Katniss Everdeen. 'I'm really excited to play Katniss. I relate to her quite a lot. I think she is very fearless, but then she's also got that nurturing quality about her. 'Everyone needs to come and watch The Hunger Games: On Stage because it's going to be nothing like you've ever seen before. 'It's going to be an amazing experience, amazing sets, such cool costumes. There's going to be a new theatre built just for this show in Canary Wharf.'

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping casts Katniss Everdeen's parents

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping has cast Katniss Everdeen's parents. The upcoming prequel movie has added Scot Greenan and Grace Ackary as Burdock Everdeen and Asterid March, respectively - the father and mother of Jennifer Lawrence's iconic heroine from the original Hunger Games films. It has also been announced that Melody Chikakane Brown and Jefferson White have joined The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping as Hattie Meeney and Mr. McCoy, respectively. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will feature Joseph Zada in the lead role of Haymitch Abernathy - the character previously played by Woody Harrelson in the original tetralogy - while Whitney Peak has been cast as his girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. Maya Hawke will take on the role of Wiress, the former Hunger Games victor who now mentors the tributes of District 12, while Mckenna Grace will portray District 12 tribute Maysilee Donner. Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and Karate Kid: Legends star Ben Wang have also joined the cast as Plutarch Heavensbee, Beetee Latier, and District 12 tribute Wyatt Callow, respectively. Glenn Close has signed on to play Drusilla Sickle, the cruel escort to the tributes of District 12, while Billy Porter has been cast as her estranged husband Magno Stift, who serves as the contestants' uninspired designer. Kieran Culkin is set to appear in the movie as Caesar Flickerman - the character first played by Stanley Tucci in the original Hunger Games films - and Elle Fanning has signed on to play Effie Trinket, previously portrayed by Elizabeth Banks. Rounding out the ensemble is Ralph Fiennes, who will step into the role of President Coriolanus Snow, previously played by the late Donald Sutherland in the original movies and by Tom Blyth in the 2023 prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is based on Suzanne Collins' 2025 novel of the same name, and serves as the second instalment in her Hunger Games prequel trilogy. Taking place 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games, the story follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy as he is forced to compete in the ruthless 50th Hunger Games, where the number of tributes - and the bloodshed - is doubled. As Haymitch struggles to stay alive, he begins to uncover the Capitol's darkest secrets and learns the devastating cost of rebellion. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping - which is slated to hit cinemas on November 20, 2026 - is being directed by Francis Lawrence, who will be working from a script written by Billy Ray. The movie is being produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force, with Cameron MacConomy serving as executive producer. Following the announcement that Zada and Peak would lead The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-President Erin Westerman said: 'The Hunger Games franchise has long been a launching pad for remarkable young actors, and Jo and Whitney carry that legacy forward with incredible heart, depth, and fire. 'After auditioning hundreds of gifted performers from around the world, these two stood out - not just for their talent, but for the emotional truth they brought to these iconic roles. 'Haymitch has always been a fan favourite, and his origin story is one of the most anticipated in the franchise. His relationship with Lenore Dove is deeply woven into the emotional history of Panem. 'We can't wait for fans to experience the story that shaped one of the most compelling characters in the series.'

Chloë finds a hobby: I scream with delight as an arrow hits the target, but I'm no Katniss Everdeen

Picking up a bow allowed Chloë McPolin to live out her Hunger Games fantasy, but she soon found that archery is not ideal as a solo activity Recently, I haven't really indulged in many outdoor pursuits in my quest to find a hobby – which is interesting, considering we're in the depths of summer. It wasn't until recently when my housemates and I watched every Hunger Games film known to man that I saw Katniss Everdeen looking effortlessly suave with her bow and arrow, shooting down rivals and prey. It reminded me that I hadn't yet given archery a go. While it may often be written off as just another stag-do activity, I couldn't shake the image of myself with a bow and arrow. The idea appealed not only to my new interest in the Hunger Games but also to my long-standing aspiration to cosplay as an aristocrat.

66% Of Americans Feel The Job Market Is Nearly Impossible

Gen Z is grappling with the challenges of today's competitive job market. Welcome to the Hunger Games! Now, I know that the job market is far from the terror of Katniss Everdeen's bleak reality. However, for many, the entire hiring process can feel like trying to survive a fight to the finish with a glued-on smile and unyielding optimism that something, anything, will give you a glimpse of hope. Because let's face it: nothing feels more hopeless than trying to secure a job in 2025. In fact, according to the 2025 Workforce and Hiring Report by the leading hiring platform Greenhouse, despite continued confidence, nearly 7 in 10 candidates across all markets say the job market is extremely or very competitive (US: 66%, UK: 68%, Ireland: 63%), with more candidates than available positions. Why Is The Job Market So Challenging Today? Let's take a closer look at what Greenhouse found after conducting a multi-market survey of more than 2,200 full-time workers and temporarily unemployed job seekers from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Interestingly, the study revealed that hiring automation, employer ghosting (or unresponsiveness), and bias have reshaped the hiring landscape as a whole. And in turn, this has led to a problematic response from candidates. What they found was that many job seekers were turning to multiple tools, such as AI agents and resume hacks. Some, (45%) were even going so far as to embellish their qualifications on resumes to improve their chances of getting noticed. In short, they were trying anything and everything to even have a shot. The hiring process has become an outright mess. And it's only getting messier by the minute. So, how do we clean it up? Is there a way to create a level playing field where potential candidates feel they can be seen and allowed to stand out, while also safeguarding the system from AI hacks and cheating? Several companies have already begun exploring various options. In fact, according to a recent article by CNBC, Google is considering moving away entirely from virtual interviews to prevent candidates from cheating with AI. But, is that even possible? Can we truly return to a time when Chat-GPT or Jasper AI did not influence applications and interviews? Now, before we place all the blame on technology and try our luck at going back to churning butter and waiting for slow wifi to boot our 1989 computers, let's take a quick look at how this reality is impacting the psyche of Gen Z. Because, here's the thing: before we can fix the problem, we need to find out how this specific issue is impacting the mindset of potential hires. And believe me, this generation of recent graduates is not having it easy right now. Why Does The Hiring Process Feel Like A Bad First Date? Imagine being right out of college, sharpening up your resume, and feeling like there's absolutely no way you even have a chance at getting an initial interview. This is the reality for many Gen Zers right now. They're having to put their best foot forward and try to win over an AI bot, before even securing a single human view of their CV. And, if that's not depressing enough, look at the recent trend noted by CBS. Scammers are now creating deepfakes to apply for remote job postings. In addition to this finding, Gartner, a global research and advisory firm, suggested that by 2028, nearly one in four job applicants will be fake. So, not only is an entire generation fighting to stand out amongst their peers, they're also trying to prove their skills against AI bots. AI is becoming one of the top tools utilized by candidates and employers during the hiring process. But that tool isn't always creating an ideal outcome for either. In fact, according to the BBC, AI hiring tools might be killing your chances at getting the best person for the job, especially when the sole evaluation process is built upon AI's detection and interpretation of how well someone responds to prompts. Absolutely! And Daniel Chait, CEO and Co-founder of Greenhouse, has some ideas on where to start. In a statement on the Greenhouse blog, he suggested, 'We don't need more friction or hoops to jump through; we need a hiring process that allows people's true selves to come through more clearly and more completely.' Chait went on to state, 'A more human and three-dimensional hiring process that helps candidates showcase their skills and focus their job search is the only way to cut through the chaos and connect the right people with the right roles.' Anggie Salazar, partner and brand strategist at CROING, a global creative agency, also suggested that creating spaces where applicants can show you their humanity is ideal. She revealed that at her company, 'our approach is deeply human—we're more likely to hire someone who sends a voice note or video with their application than someone who blends in with an AI-written cover letter.' So, is the job market a mess? Absolutely. But, is there hope of making it human again? I think so. To attract the best candidates, we should do everything possible to create environments where AI and humanity can coexist and collaborate to bring us exceptional new hires.

If the Apocalypse Hits, Which Character Will You Become?

You know the scene: the sky's red, the city's on fire, some radio in the background is crackling out news of total collapse, and yet, here comes a group of random strangers magically surviving together. You've seen the movies and the characters and you know the drill. Because no matter how often Hollywood ends the world, the same personalities rise from the ashes. It's like someone handed out apocalypse roles and said, 'Go be your most dramatic self.'So the real question is: when the world goes into full chaos mode, which one will you become? The Leader of the Group – Katniss Everdeen There's always one person delivering a motivational speech while everything is collapsing. That's this character. They're constantly rallying the group with emotional one-liners like 'We don't leave anyone behind!' even if no one asks. But here's the twist, they don't just talk. They're also the first to jump into danger, with no hesitation. They'll sprint toward the chaos with no hesitation. Half leader, half chaos machine, but somehow It works. The Suspiciously Calm Genius – Nick Fury They never raise their voice, never panic and never explain more than they have to. While everyone else is freaking out, they're two steps ahead sipping coffee, making cryptic comments, and casually saving the day. This character doesn't need to shout or show off. They just know things. Like how the bunker door is rigged, or that the aliens are coming on Tuesday. They've got plans A through Z and probably a plan after that, too. The Walking Meme Who Can't Die – Scott Lang (Ant Man) Somehow still cracking jokes while everything's burning. Their role? To keep morale up and accidentally save the day. They trip over their own feet, scream the loudest, and flirt mid-crisis but make no mistake: this character will survive. You'll find them finding laughter in the chaos and asking the most unhinged questions in the most serious moments but to be honest? We need this spirit during a crisis. The Overly Attached One Who Wants Their People Safe – Evelyn Abbott This is the heart of the group, the one dragging injured friends to safety, crying mid-sprint, and refusing to leave anyone behind even the guy who betrayed them two scenes ago. They will pause a whole evacuation to grab a photo album or make sure someone's pet makes it out alive. They're loyal to a fault, extremely tired, and probably they're the mom of the group. The Lovably Clueless One – Dustin They have no idea what's going on. Everyone's panicking about rations and survival strategy, and they're in the back asking if it's okay to charge their phone. They confuse 'radiation zone' with 'restricted Wi-Fi,' and yet they survive. Somehow, they always get lucky. They open the wrong door and discover a safe exit. They misread the map and accidentally lead the group away from danger. They're not useless just operating on a completely different wavelength. Whether you're giving heartfelt speeches mid-disaster, accidentally saving the day by being in the wrong place at the right time, or just crying over your group's emotional arc, there's a little end-of-the-world character in all of us. And just know: if the apocalypse ever actually happens, you've already seen the movie and know exactly what role you're playing.
