She chose to prepare from home, using online resources to clear her doubts and improve her understanding. She also regularly practiced through mock tests to sharpen her skills. After finishing her Madhyamik exams in 2023, Devdutta followed a strict study routine, dedicating at least 10 hours a day for JEE preparation. 'You need a proper study plan and consistent practice over two years. At the end of the day, self-study is the most effective tool,' she shared. What makes her achievement even more meaningful is the personal sacrifice that came with it. Devdutta, who used to love playing the violin, set it aside completely during her preparation. 'I didn't touch my violin for two years. It was something I loved deeply, but I knew I had to give it up. The only break I allowed myself was talking to my mother about my studies,' she said with a smile. After securing AIR 16 in JEE Advanced 2025 and emerging as the female topper, Devdutta now wants to get admission in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She wants to explore the world of artificial intelligence and robotics, especially in the field of research. The JEE Advanced 2025, conducted on May 18, saw 1.8 lakh candidates appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Out of those, 54,378 students qualified, including 9,404 girls.

KOLKATA: A Madhyamik topper in 2023, Katwa's Devdutta Majhi has come out on top among girls in this year's JEE (Advanced), securing an overall rank of 16 with 312 marks. The Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School student, who had ranked 6th in HS, aims to join IISc for further studies. Besides Devdutta, four other candidates from the IIT Kharagpur zone are among the top 100. Following Devdutta's brilliant performance, which she says is the result of two years of hard work, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee congratulated her on X. Devdutta wants to conduct research in the fields of AI and robotics. Devdutta told TOI that she had studied for JEE by herself, without much help from coaching centres. She went online for expert consultations and mock tests. "I kept myself away from all programmes and family gatherings to focus only on studies. One has to practise and study every day, for at least two years, if they want to do well in competitive exams," she said. Since Madhyamik, Devdutta has been studying 10 hours a day. She gave up playing the violin, once her favourite hobby, and went back to it only after her JEE exams. In the last two years, her only pastime has been speaking to her mother about her preparations.

‘Wish I could have done better': Devdutta Majhi, female topper in JEE Advanced with AIR 16

Devdutta Majhi from the IIT Kharagpur zone has emerged as the top female topper in the JEE Advanced, bagging an All India Rank of 16, scoring 312 marks in the Common Rank List. Hailing from Katwa, her success comes as no surprise: she has consistently excelled at academic milestones. In 2023, she was the West Bengal Madhyamik topper, followed by a perfect 100 percentile and AIR 1 in JEE Main 2025 (Session 2). 'For the last two years, I have been studying for this day. I wish I could have done a bit better,' she said. A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School, Devdutta studied for 10-12 hours daily. Her dream is to join IISc Bangalore to pursue a BTech in Computing, followed by research in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Over 1.8 lakh candidates appeared for the JEE Advanced this year. Her mother, Shelly Dan, a physics teacher, expressed pride and surprise. 'I am very happy for her. I had expected a good rank, but not this. She is the female topper. We were waiting for this day. She studied under my guidance. She never took tuitions, just self-study and online guidance. Many students go to Kota or Delhi, but she didn't,' Dan said. Majhi, who enjoys playing chess, caring for stray animals, and playing the violin, credited her preparation strategy to a disciplined study plan. 'I focused on theory in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics first, then practiced problem-solving. I had a lot of books for that,' she said. She also occasionally took online guidance from teachers based in Delhi and Kolkata. For aspirants, she advised that one needs hard work, discipline, and dedication.
