Vaping has led a surge of young people using nicotine/tobacco products
The number of young people vaping and/or using other tobacco products has surged from less than 20% in 2015 to 30% almost a decade later., new Irish analysis shows. Experts have also warned that the decrease in tobacco cigarette use has slowed in parallel with a rise in e-cigarette use. Ireland has seen an experiment in 'unrestricted access' to vapes with worrying consequences, warned Paul Kavanagh, chair of the Royal College of Physicians clinical advisory group on smoking and e-cigarettes. It follows a finding this week from the Irish National Cancer Registry that up-take of e-cigarettes has been 'particularly marked among young people and adolescent non-smokers'. Dr Kavanagh was co-author on new Irish analysis published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe. He said: It may well be another 10, 15, 20 years before we have a definitive and clear picture in relation to the health effects of e-cigarettes particularly when it comes to some disease categories like cancer. 'Nicotine is a poison, it's a psychoactive drug, and it's addictive. These e-cigarette products contain nicotine and in fact they can contain it in uncertain and unpredictable doses.' Dr Kavanagh added: 'Of course there is then that concern also that using an e-cigarette may lead young people to go on and start smoking.' Surge in uptake of vaping The analysis showed that vape use increased from 3.1% to 8.4% across all ages, and dual use increased from 1.3% to 3.1%. Among those aged 15–24 use of vapes and/or tobacco increased from 19·6% in 2015 to 30% in 2023. They also found that while in 2015 the use of vapes and tobacco cigarettes together was 'strongly associated' with higher odds of wanting to quit smoking, that is no longer the case. This is against a backdrop of the ban on sales of vapes and tobacco products to under-18s since December 2023. Despite that ban, teenagers speaking to the Irish Examiner described how vapes remain very popular. HSE data on prosecutions New HSE figures show that 51 retailers were prosecuted for selling tobacco products to children last year including — for the first time — eight prosecutions for sale of vapes to children. Disposable vapes in breach of regulations that were purchased in Waterford City. Picture: Joe Evans HSE assistant national director for environmental health Ann Marie Part said: 'While the majority of retailers take active measures to confirm the age of someone buying tobacco or vape products, it is disappointing to see some retailers still selling to children.' She added: 'All it takes is a request for ID at the counter to ensure you are selling to someone over the legal age.' Also last year the HSE National Environmental Health Service prosecuted two shops for selling e-cigarettes with nicotine levels higher than legally allowed. In 2023, working in conjunction with Customs and Revenue, they seized 37.8 tonnes and last year 26.6 tonnes of vapes or refill products with illegal nicotine levels. Links between sales of vapes and the tobacco industry were discussed during the World Conference on Tobacco Control in Dublin this week.

HGO eyes expanded Kanmantoo copper resource
HGO spots copper outside of existing Kanmantoo mine resource Deepest drill hole intersected 2.4m at 0.9% copper and 0.04g/t gold Resource definition drilling has also intersected multiple positive results Drilling continuing with the goal of growing the resource base Special Report: Hillgrove Resources has found copper mineralisation outside the existing resource while drilling at its Kanmantoo operations in South Australia. The company is undertaking 20,000m of resource extension drilling and 40,000m of resource definition drilling with the aim of growing the resource of 19.3Mt at 0.77% copper and 0.14g/t gold. Drilling at the 750 diamond drill site at Kavanagh - the deepest underground drill site at the project – intercepted 2.4m at 0.9% copper and 0.04g/t gold (uncut) from 238.6m downhole in hole 25KVUG0597. In addition to this, with the resource definition drilling, there were multiple positive results, which included: 13m at 2.24% Cu and 0.13g/t Au (uncut) from 109m downhole; 2m at 1.19% Cu and 0.17g/t Au (uncut) from 108m downhole; 4.1m at 0.9% Cu and 0.06g/t Au (uncut) from 82m downhole; and 9m at 0.79% Cu and 0.28g/t Au (uncut) from 196m downhole. Hillgrove Resources (ASX:HGO) said finding this mineralisation outside the resource estimate highlighted the continuity of the Kavanagh ore body. As 25KVUG0597 provided the deepest intersection at Kavanagh West, being 200m below the existing stoping area, it indicates a new vertical extension target. Drilling from underground is on track to achieve the 60,000m target, with 5,931.6m completed in May from the fulltime operation of three underground diamond rigs. Watch: New top mining metrics for Kanmantoo copper Looking to grow the resource base Hillgrove will continue drilling in the coming months focused on investigating the potential to grow the resource base and enhance the long-term outlook at Kanmantoo. 'We are still in the early stages of the drilling program at the Kavanagh 750 diamond drill site but I'm encouraged by the results so far,' CEO and managing director Bob Fulker said. 'These are the first holes drilled in this area since underground development began and they not only reaffirm our confidence in the existing resource but also include several intersections with grades exceeding the current average in the published mineral resource estimate. 'One particularly positive result comes from hole 25KVUG0597, which intersected mineralisation approximately 200 metres below the current Kavanagh West stoping horizon on the 785 level. 'Although the intersection is narrow, it represents the deepest mineralised hit recorded at Kavanagh West to date. 'This opens up a new vertical extension target with the potential to expand the mineral resource estimate if this trend continues.' An updated resource estimate will be released in Q4 2025 following a mid-year data close off window. Run from halfway and finish from Meekison has Bohs sitting pretty in second
Cork City 0 Bohemians 2 SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division BOHEMIAN'S CHARGE UP the Premier Division table continued by cruising to a comfortable victory away to Cork City. First-half goals from Archie Meekison and Dayle Rooney saw the Gypsies move above Drogheda United into second. They remain six points adrift of Shamrock Rovers. Dunfermline United manager Neil Lennon and Chesterfield chief Paul Cook watched on among the 3,215 crowd at Turner's Cross. The home supporters weren't happy as they greeted the full-time whistle with a chorus of boos. The hosts looked like they were still on a mid-season break as their winless run extended to eight games. They remain one point above bottom side Sligo Rovers, who have a game in hand. Ger Nash broke new ground as, for the first time this season, City named an unchanged side. There were changes on the bench, though. After 17 years in England, David Meyler had his homecoming as Nash's new assistant manager. Meanwhile, club stalwart Mark McNulty slotted in as goalkeeping coach. Alan Reynolds opted for one change as Leigh Kavanagh replaced Rob Cornwall in defence. Advertisement The Bohs boss felt his side had, 'something to prove against Cork,' after their late defeat at the Cross in February. They accomplished that mission by stretching their good form to eight wins in 10 games. Departing Crystal Palace loanee Seán Grehan and Kavanagh were dominant at the back. Kavanagh's diagonal ball created the first chance for Meekison. The Scottish winger had all the time in the world to pick his spot, but fluffed his shot off target. When the chance came again, he showed bundles more composure. The opportunity arrived in the 11th minute from Rooney's long clearance. Darragh Crowley's heavy touch presented Meekison with a clear run from halfway. He went around Tein Troost twice on his mazy run before rolling home his first goal of the season. With City's hopes of a first clean sheet of 2025 extinguished, the one-way traffic continued. Kavanagh's outside-of-the-boot flick from a corner forced Troost into an acrobatic save. Then, Rooney's wonderful chip floated just wide. City only had one shot in the first half. They should have scored it, too. Josh Fitzpatrick's cross found its way to Cathal O'Sullivan, but the Premier League-linked teenager headed wide. Bohs carved City open twice down the left in the closing stages. From the first of those, Adam McDonnell's shot was blocked away by Freddie Anderson as Bohs protested for handball. They made the next one count. McDonnell turned Anderson, Ross Tierney's shot ran across goal, and Rooney was left with the simplest of tap-ins for his third goal in four games. It could've been three before the break, but McDonnell curled around the post. Troost produced another super save on the resumption. Rooney gave the return ball to Tierney, who looked certain to score, until the keeper reached back across to save. Tierney had another chance moments later, which Anderson slid across to block. City had a couple of penalty appeals waved away. Seani Maguire tumbled over in the box, but Paul Norton gave the free-kick to Kavanagh. Then, Jordan Flores came through the back of O'Sullivan and was lucky to escape without any punishment. Half-time substitute Kitt Nelson and O'Sullivan flashed shots over the bar as City tried to build momentum. Maguire had the next opening, but Flores deflected his shot behind. City produced precious little in the final 20 minutes as Dawson Devoy came closest to adding a third, denied by Troost. Cork City: Tein Troost; Milan Mbeng, Freddie Anderson, Charlie Lyons, Darragh Crowley (Kitt Nelson 46); Cathal O'Sullivan, Seán Murray (Greg Bolger 53), Evan McLaughlin (Rio Shipston 71), Josh Fitzpatrick; Seani Maguire (Malik Dijksteel 75), Djenairo Daniels. Garda grabbed by testicles by prisoner had struggled to have baby, court told
The court heard the victim and his partner had been trying for a baby at the time of the assault, and the victim believed this incident had affected him. A garda whose testicles were grabbed by a prisoner in a garda station had been trying for a baby and believed the assault had affected his ability to have a child, a court has heard. Defendant Neil Waters (42) could not recall doing what he did, his lawyer said. Judge David McHugh said what had happened to the garda had been quite significant. Judge McHugh ordered Waters to complete 100 hours of community service in lieu of three months in prison. The defendant, of Maynooth Road, Celbridge, Co Kildare, admitted threatening and abusive behaviour at Main Street in Celbridge, and assaulting a peace officer, on March 19, 2024. Stock image Today's News in 90 Seconds - June 12 2025 Sergeant Noel Kavanagh told Blanchardstown District Court gardaí were called to the Kildrought Lounge following reports of an incident. Sgt Kavanagh said Waters was verbally threatening towards staff and gardaí at the scene. He was arrested and taken back to the garda station. Sgt Kavanagh said he was in the station when he heard a commotion, and he went to investigate. As Waters was being placed in a cell, he was being noisy, and when he saw Sgt Kavanagh he turned and went for him. Sgt Kavanagh said gardaí pushed Waters back and he fell to the ground, and as he did so he rugby-tackled the injured party. Officers then went to help Waters up, but at this point he grabbed the victim by the testicles. The garda's legs buckled, and he tried to pull Waters's hands away. Sgt Kavanagh said that when the victim was clear of Waters, he fell to his knees with the pain. He said the garda did not wish to make a victim-impact statement. However, the court heard the victim and his partner had been trying for a baby at the time of the assault, and the victim believed this incident had affected him. The court heard Waters had five previous convictions, for minor road matters. Defence solicitor John O'Doherty said Waters wished to apologise for his behaviour. Waters knows he was abusive and out of control, but he cannot recall doing what he did to the garda, the solicitor said. A medical report on the garda's injuries was handed into court. Mr O'Doherty said it was impossible for medics to say if there was a full correlation between the assault and the garda's difficulties, but it 'didn't help the situation'. Mr O'Doherty also said Waters was a qualified electrician, and his partner was in court to support him.
