‘Gentle giant' dog has one eye and a ‘heart as big as his paws.' He needs a home
A 'sweet' one-eyed dog was returned to a South Carolina shelter — and he needs a new home.
'Meet Kahn, our dashing gentle giant with a heart as big as his paws,' the Charleston Animal Society wrote on its website. 'This big, soulful boy has a quiet wisdom about him, the kind of dog who doesn't need to be the center of attention to leave a lasting mark on your heart.'
Kahn waits for a fresh start after he first was picked up as a stray in 2019. At the time, he had both of his eyes and went back home with his previous owner, shelter spokesperson Kay Hyman told McClatchy News in a July 8 email.
Kahn landed at the shelter again this year, weighing 20 pounds more and missing an eye that had been surgically removed. The shelter said it treated him for skin problems, heartworm disease and a respiratory infection.
At one point, the mixed-breed dog was adopted into a new home. But it wasn't a good fit.
'He is sweet and lovable, but sadly the other dog did not like him and attacked him causing a serious wound on his front paw,' Hyman wrote. 'Kahn did not fight back!'
The family gave up Kahn, who received care for his injured leg and went back up for adoption.
The 7-year-old pup has become known for his loyalty and 103-pound stature. He gets along with other calm dogs but is OK with having time to himself.
'Kahn's independence is part of his charm, but once he trusts you, he offers a kind of loyalty that feels rare and precious,' the shelter wrote in a Facebook post. 'His missing eye only adds to his character, a badge of resilience that makes you love him even more. Kahn's the type of dog who'll sit beside you on quiet mornings, follow you from room to room just to be near, and remind you that sometimes, the most powerful love is the one that asks for nothing in return.'
