Driver escapes with minor injuries as MPV plunges into river

ALOR SETAR: A multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) plunged into a river near Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB) last night. The 41-year-old driver, however, escaped with only minor injuries. The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre said it received a distress call about the incident at 8.01pm. A team from the Alor Setar Fire and Rescue Station, led by Senior Fire Officer II Roslan Saad and comprising six personnel, was dispatched to the scene. "The Kedah operations command centre received an emergency call via the MERS 999 line, reporting that a Toyota Alphard had skidded and plunged into the river. "The victim was rescued and brought to a safe location for treatment," the department said in a statement. The victim was later taken to HSB. The operation concluded at 8.52pm. It is understood that the stretch of road near the river has seen multiple accidents, with vehicles reportedly plunging into the water in past incidents.

'Most tragic I've ever seen': Rescuer on family of 6 found in sunken car

JITRA: A rescuer described recovering the bodies of six family members — including a six-month-old baby — from a submerged car in Sungai Korok as the most heartbreaking operation of his career. "Throughout my time with the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department, this is the most tragic and heartbreaking case I've ever attended. "The saddest moment was when my team and I carried the bodies of the baby and the three small children," said Mohammad Hasri Haslan, 31, a Water Rescue Team member from the Jitra Fire and Rescue station. Hasri said he was seated on top of the Proton Iswara as it was being lifted from the riverbank, overwhelmed with sorrow as the bodies were removed one by one. "The first was a young girl, followed by a six-month-old baby boy, then a young boy. The fourth was another girl, the fifth was their mother, and finally, the driver of the car — the children's father. "I have children of my own... seeing that was truly heartbreaking. The baby especially — it was devastating," he said. Hasri, who has years of experience recovering bodies from water, said nothing compared to the sorrow he felt during yesterday's operation. Still, he said, he had to remain focused on his duty despite the emotional toll. "Sungai Korok is deep — about six metres," he added. The bodies of the six — who had been reported missing early Saturday after visiting a relative in Taman Seri Aman — were found inside a Proton Iswara submerged in the river. They were identified as Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32; his wife, Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31; and their children, Putra Rayyan Nur Izzat, 9; Hawa Adriana Nur Izzat, 8; Annayla Humaira Nur Izzat, 7; and six-month-old Tuah Haydar. Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said the family are believed to have tried to escape but were found huddled together at the back of the car. All six were buried in a single grave at the Kampung Bohor Karang Muslim Cemetery in Jerlun at 11.50pm last night.

Almost impossible to open doors of sinking car due to water pressure

KUALA LUMPUR: Drivers and passengers have 30 to 60 seconds to escape if a vehicle plunges into a river or sea, says Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad. He said the priority should be to stay calm, unbuckle seat belts and lower the windows immediately, as they are the main escape route. "Get windows down as quickly as possible and exit through them. It is almost impossible to open car doors due to water pressure. "You generally have 30 to 60 seconds to act before water pressure makes escape significantly harder," he said. Nor Hisham said electric vehicles (EVs) are similarly affected. Though waterproof and equipped with safety shutdowns, their electronic window controls may fail faster. "The electronic window controls in EVs may fail faster, so escaping through the window using a tool is even more vital," he said," he added. He advised that all vehicles be equipped with emergency tools such as a spring-loaded glass breaker and a seatbelt cutter. "These tools should be mounted within easy reach, such as on the driver's door or sun visor. If stored in the glove box or boot, they may be unreachable in an emergency." Only side windows, not windshields, should be targeted in such cases, as they are designed to shatter with proper tools. His remarks follow the discovery of a family of six who were found dead in a Proton Iswara submerged in Sungai Korok, Jitra. Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said the bodies—two adults, three children and a baby—were found huddled at the back and left side of the vehicle.

A relative of the victims, Nor Syafiqah Ishak, 28, confirmed the identities of the six, who had been reported missing since last Saturday. The dead were identified as Muhammad Azim Izat Ishak, 32; his wife Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31; and their children Putra Rayyan Nur Izzat, 9; Hawa Adriana, 8; Annayla Humaira, 7; and six-month-old Tuah Haydar. Nor Syafiqah said they started searching for her brother Muhammad Azim's family along a stretch of the river soon after they were reported missing. 'We found no clues because the river is big, deep and murky. 'This morning, when the water receded slightly, someone spotted the edge of a car bonnet, and we all rushed over,' she told reporters at the scene. She said family members identified the victims at the scene after the car was retrieved from the river by firemen. According to Nor Syafiqah, the family of six had spent the night at a relative's house in Taman Seri Aman in Jitra, before reportedly leaving for home in Jerlun at around 5.30 am on Saturday. 'But when they never arrived, we started to worry and tried calling and searching for them. By midday, when there was still no sign of them, we filed a police report,' she said. Meanwhile, Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Zone 1 chief Ahmad Aminuddin Abd Rahim said they received a call regarding the car in the river at 8.38 am. 'It was reported that a Proton Iswara Sedan was in the river and that six victims — a man, a woman, three children and an infant — were inside the vehicle. 'The recovery operation was completed by 11 am and identification of the victims was carried out by next-of-kin,' he said. He added that according to rescue personnel, all the victims were found in the rear passenger seat, and the vehicle's windows had to be broken to retrieve the bodies. 'The river is six metres deep, and tyre marks, believed to be from braking, were found about one metre from the riverbank,' he said. – Bernama bomba car found dead lead river
