Heidelberg United ‘heartbroken' as NPLW footballer Keely Lockhart tragically dies
The Victorian football community is in mourning after the passing of NPLW striker Keely Lockhart.
Lockhart's club Heidelberg United announced the tragic news in a lengthy social media post on Sunday.
'It is with deep sadness that we honour the life of club legend today Keely Lockhart who passed in the early hours of the morning. The club is heartbroken by this loss,' Heidelberg wrote.
'Having played her 50th game for the club this year, Keely Lockhart became an indispensable member of the Heidelberg family as both a formidable striker in our women's team and as a coach in our community girls' program since she joined us at the end of 2019.
'Keely had a profound impact on all our lives, both on and off the field. She was a mentor, a leader and a friend to each of us. Keely always put everyone around her first, always checking in with every player, parent and club member.
'She was frequently on the sidelines at junior girls matches cheering on and encouraging the players. She was a true Heidelberg Warrior and put everything on the line week in week out for her team, her teammates and the club.
'We are all grieving together during this difficult time.'
Before crossing to the Warriors, Lockhart was a star for Eltham in the State League 1 North-West competition.
Football reporter Joey Lynch called it 'A heartbreaking day for Victorian football. Vale, Keely Lockhart'.
'What a sad, sad day. Vale Keely Lockhart,' Georgia Rajic added. 'Thoughts and condolences with her family and the wider football community. Heartbroken.'
Club posts on X and Instagram were flooded with condolences and sadness, including from a father of a player.
'This is heartbreaking news,' the dad said.
'Condolences to Keely's family and all those close to her. She was always the first person to help my daughter and chat with her during her difficult time at the club.
'Memories of an angel that will always stay in my daughter's heart.'
Vale.
