Las Vegas cybersecurity expert offers tips to avoid Real ID scams as deadline approaches
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The looming May 7 deadline to get a Real ID has scammers ramping up their schemes. A cybersecurity strategist shared with 8 News Now all the ways scammers are using the Real ID enforcement deadline to their benefit. 'They're trying to create a pressure campaign, and taking advantage of the fact a lot of people don't really understand what it is and why they need it,' Las Vegas Cybersecurity strategist with Guidepoint Paul Keener said. They're after social security numbers, date of birth, addresses – the trifecta to create a false identity to open an account. From posing as government agencies to offering online services, requesting personal information, and using fear tactics. Keener also went on to add that using AI to make their texts and calls sound more believable. 'There's also deepfakes to sound like someone is calling from Nevada DMV, it's a little bit more scary,' he said. Keep in mind that the DMV will never ask for personal information through email or ID applications cannot be done online. Be wary of unsolicited communications – hang up on callers, and block the clicking on links that don't look right. If you get a text or email, delete it without clicking on it, verify the source, and report suspicious activity. If you feel you've been scammed, there is a website to report it to CLICK HERE for more information. It's also important to report it to the IRS, so they can flag your Social Security number. Investigation launched after claims workmen ‘p****d' in public and ‘whistled' at passers-by
An investigation will be launched following allegations council contractors 'p****d' in public and 'whistled' at passers-by on a delayed roadwork project. Manchester Council said it 'takes any accusations of inappropriate behaviour very seriously' and confirmed the incidents 'will be investigated and the appropriate action taken' after a resident's complaint. The firm carrying out the project to install a bike lane on Oldham Road in the city centre, Octavius, said it has implemented 'extra training about proper conduct'. One neighbour said the scheme, which started in February, was scheduled to finish last Sunday (April 27). The same resident hit out at workmen's 'poor behaviour'. 'A guy pulled his pants down and started p***ing at 8:30am one morning,' said Chrissie Keener, who's lived on the road for 11 years. 'He was p***ing in one of the holes being dug.' Ms Keener, who works in media, also said she witnessed staff 'eyeing up' a passerby. She said: 'It was nothing overly aggressive. There was a woman jogging and they were eyeing her up and looking at each other. They have been whistling too. It's poor behaviour. 'I would not care if they got it done but they keep extending it.' She also told the Local Democracy Reporting Service work has been slow: 'They have just started putting a pathway in. 'I do not know why a cycle lane is a mammoth project. Literally a 10 storey building has gone up faster next to it. 'I am not a builder but looking out you can see they have kept digging holes and refilling them. Most of the time there's no one working there.' A spokesperson for Octavius said there had been a 'hiatus' on work due to 'delays in obtaining some essential materials'. In a statement, they said 'extra training' has been implemented around 'conduct': 'We take the resident's views seriously and quickly arranged an in-person meeting with the project liaison officer to understand them better. 'The cycleway project is running to schedule. The work in front of the resident's house has started, but a delay in obtaining some essential materials – granite street furniture – is why the resident has observed a hiatus and why this specific element of the project will be completed later than originally anticipated. 'Project leaders have raised the resident's concerns about some conduct with the site team. It has been made clear that inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated, in addition the team have all received extra training about proper conduct on site.' A spokesperson for Manchester City Council added: "The council takes any accusations of inappropriate behaviour very seriously and we would like to reassure this resident that it will be investigated and the appropriate action taken."

ABQ RIDE offering incentives to hire more bus drivers
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – After pushing to hire more bus drivers for well over a year, the City of Albuquerque is still fighting to get more people to take the job. ABQ RIDE has 133 drivers currently, but they need 111 more. 'We started this hiring event back in October of 2023, and that was at the time that we had made our biggest service cuts. We cut around roughly 1,500 hours of service in 2023,' said Transit Director for ABQ RIDE Leslie Keener. Story continues below Podcast: What Will Voters Do With $1.5 Million? The department said thanks to hiring events, they were able to add some services back in 2024, but toward the end of the year, they started to see a loss in drivers and lost some of those service additions. To get more people behind the wheel, the city is offering a $5,000 hiring bonus for drivers who come with a Commercial Driver's License. They're also now offering in-house CDL training and have made other changes. 'We removed the education requirement, so all they need to bring is a driver's license,' said Keener. Before another round of service changes in August, ABQ RIDE is hoping to hire more by also telling new drivers about security changes. Those measures include more security guards and a newer rider app allowing easier reporting of problems. 'I think someone should want to work here because they have a passion for public service. This is such an essential service to the community. We take people to see their friends, to see their families, to the drug store, to medical appointments. It's just a huge impact,' said Keener. ABQ RIDE said 12 new drivers will start this month, and they have another 20 in the pipeline, starting classes in May. It can take two months to get them prepped for the open road. Watch out for March Madness scams
In less than a week, Climate Pledge Arena will transform its ice rink into a basketball court as Seattle hosts thousands of fans for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Excitement for the tournament is building, but scammers are already hard at work. 'It's not that people are foolish or that they don't understand how to do things. This scamming is a professional business,' says cybersecurity expert, Paul Keener. In one of the largest scams, scammers sell tickets that look legitimate but aren't. Oftentimes, the buyers don't even know their ticket is fake until they arrive at the event and are turned away. For the NCAA tournament, a spokesperson for Climate Pledge tells KIRO 7, 'We strive for the best possible guest experience for all fans who come to Climate Pledge Arena, whether that be for a Kraken game, concert, or the upcoming March Madness games. We strongly encourage all fans to buy their tickets from the venue's primary ticket provider. For Climate Pledge Arena, this is NCAA Ticket Exchange on Ticketmaster is the official resale marketplace for the upcoming March Madness games.' 'Nobody wants to pay the service charges associated with all of these things,' says Keener. 'So you try to find a place like Facebook Marketplace or something like that.' He says if you do buy resale, use sites like Stub Hub, Vivid Seats, and Ticketmaster, which offer refund protections that Craigslist and Facebook don't have. His biggest coaching tip – use a credit card, so if you are scammed, you can dispute the charge and hopefully recoup the money. 'Maybe you're disappointed because you couldn't get in the game, but at least you didn't lose out $400 in tickets,' says Keener.
