SNY's Keith Hernandez bluntly calls out hot-mic heckler: ‘Shut up'
Keith Hernandez had no patience for a rowdy fan at Oracle Park on Friday night. After Ronny Mauricio fouled one off in the second inning of the Mets' 8-1 win over the Giants, a fan yelled, 'That was a weak swing!' Advertisement While SNY play-by-player Gary Cohen tried to keep the conversation on Mauricio, Hernandez jumped in about the fan. 'Give that guy a hot dog so he can chew on something and shut up,' Hernandez said. 'I think he can hear you,' Cohen said, through laughter. The fan in question can't have had a great night in the end, as the Mets secured the fifth straight victory. Advertisement 3 Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez celebrate 20 years on SNY. Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez's oblivious reaction to near-miss foul ball sends SNY booth into hysterics
Things did not go well for the New York Mets on the field Thursday, but it was almost worse in the Mets' broadcast booth. The Mets were swept in their doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles Thursday at Camden Yards, and one of the franchise's retired legends was inches away from joining a couple Mets on the injured list. In the bottom of the seventh in game two of the doubleheader, O's outfielder Cedric Mullins hit a foul ball straight back and toward the SportsNet New York (SNY) booth. Play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen said the ball "went right past Keith [Hernandez]'s ear, and he never saw it." Cohen was not lying. Hernandez is one of the greatest defensive first basemen of all time with 11 Gold Gloves. Naturally, the O's broadcast team thought he had caught the ball. But SNY showed a replay from inside the booth, and while Cohen geared up to potentially catch it, Hernandez's eyes were nowhere near the ball. The replay showed Hernandez looking back down and only reacting to the noise of the ball hitting the wall behind him. And hilarity ensued in the booth. "We can laugh about it now. But if that ball had been just a few feet to the left, you could have been done for the season. Or maybe forever," Cohen said. The Mets led 1-0 entering the eighth inning of the first game, but the bullpen could not hold the lead. Baltimore won the second game, 7-3, despite a 2-0 deficit in the first inning. New York is 8-17 in its last 25 games and has squandered a 5½-game lead in the NL East. The Mets trailed the Philadelphia Phillies by 1½ games entering play Friday. Keith Hernandez nearly gets drilled by foul ball in SNY Mets booth — and didn't realize: ‘Dangerous'
Keith Hernandez had zero clue that a ball almost drilled him. During the second game of Thursday's doubleheader between the Mets and the Orioles, Hernandez was inches away from being struck by a foul ball hit by Baltimore outfielder Cedric Mullins while in the SNY booth at Camden Yards. 'Cedric Mullins fouls one back this way,' play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen said during the seventh inning of the nightcap. 'And that went right past Keith's ear and he never saw it.' Following the play, the camera then showed a slow-motion replay from inside the broadcasting booth, where a ball zips past Hernandez's head while he was looking toward the ground. Hernandez appeared to not be paying attention as he took quite some time to react to the ball that nearly hit him. The SNY crew then shared a long laugh about the incident, with Cohen saying how the former Mets first baseman was lucky the ball missed him. 'I mean we can laugh about it now,' Cohen said. 'But if that ball was just a few feet more to the left, you could've been done for the season.' Hernandez interjected, 'That could have been dangerous.' 'Or maybe forever,' Cohen continued. 'You could have been back in the incinerator.' Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez celebrate 20 years on SNY. SNY Hernandez, 71, attributed the near-miss to his eyes and reflexes, which are apparently starting to slip, he said. 'My eyes are going on me and so are my reflexes,' Hernandez said. In addition to Cohen and Hernandez, the Orioles announcers also poked fun at the incident, saying that the 17-year MLB veteran likely caught the ball. Mets Keith Hernandez is introduced to the crowd during Old Timers Day celebration before the game when the New York Mets played the Colorado Rockies Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022, at Citi Field in Queens. for the NY POST 'Well Keith Hernandez is in there, and he was a pretty good first baseman he probably caught it,' MASN's Ben McDonald said. McDonald then joked about how shaken up the SNY crew was, saying the pair 'looked like they just called a doubleheader today.' 'We gotta get them boys some coffee over there,' the former Orioles pitcher continued. Fellow Baltimore announcer Kevin Brown followed up with praise for the SNY booth, calling the pair 'elite.' 'Those guys, and baseball fans know it, are just elite,' Brown said. 'They are so fun to watch and to listen to.'

Mets fans are already losing it over reliever's new official nickname
The post Mets fans are already losing it over reliever's new official nickname appeared first on ClutchPoints. Amid a flurry of New York Mets roster moves on Monday, one in particular is sure to dominate the conversation on middle school playgrounds nationwide. Advertisement Relief pitcher Richard Lovelady will join the team for the Mets' game against the Atlanta Braves after the two sides agreed to a Major League contract. But he's not going by Richard. He's going by Dicky. Dicky Lovelady. Dicky. Lovelady. Take a deep breath and let that sink in. You good? OK. Don't get too excited just yet — Lovelady will still officially be called Richard, so that's the name you'll hear on broadcasts or over the PA and what you'll read in the newspaper if there are any of those left. But he has requested teammates and fans refer to him as Dicky. Again, Dicky Lovelady. Like any true baseball enthusiast, Mets fans have jumped onto the Dicky name and made it their own. In fact, one fan hopes they could ride Dicky to another playoff run. Advertisement 'Dicky Lovelady will be the Grimace event for the 2025 Mets,' the fan wrote via X. And in the spirit of loving ladies, another fan noted his addition to the roster comes on an apt night at Citi Field. 'Ok today is Women's night at Citi field and the Mets signed/activated Dicky Lovelady for the game,' they wrote. 'That's just pure hilarity.' Again, his name is still Richard. But if you think Keith Hernandez isn't going to go with his more familiar name on a broadcast, well, then you just don't believe in fun. 'So excited for Keith Hernandez to call a Dicky Lovelady appearance,' wrote one wise fan. More than one account also acknowledged that as crazy a name as it is, Dicky Lovelady would have been a perfectly normal name in the Tungsten Arm O'Doyle era. Advertisement 'Dicky Lovelady is the type of name that would've thrown 318 innings with a 2.67 ERA for the 1897 Louisville Colonels,' chimed in the Chaos Ball Podcast. Lovelady made two appearances this season for the Toronto Blue Jays and has a career 5.26 ERA, but that was under his old name. There's no telling what Dicky can get up to now. Bizarre erection medicine ad-read sparks hilarious exchange between Mets announcers
New York Mets announcer Gary Cohen is known for his flawless delivery, whether he's calling game action or reading an advertisement for chewable erectile disfunction medicine. The trick, as he revealed to broadcast partner Keith Hernandez on Saturday, is not thinking too hard. Case in point: Cohen was reading a few spots during the Mets' 8-2 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies on Saturday when he came across one for BlueChew. '… By BlueChew,' Cohen said, adding the company tag line: 'Chew it and do it.' Hernandez, the color commentator and beloved former Mets first baseman, couldn't help but ask: 'What did you mean by that?' Cohen didn't struggle for an answer. Gary Cohen: "By BlueChew. Chew it and do it." Keith Hernandez: "What did you mean by that?" Gary Cohen: "I just read the copy here. I try to give it a good read. Try and give the advertiser everything that they paid for, Keith. And then it's somebody else's problem." #MLB — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) May 31, 2025 'I just read the copy here,' Cohen calmly told Hernandez. 'I try to give it a good read. Try and give the advertiser everything that they paid for, Keith. And then it's somebody else's problem.' The exchange provided fans with a few laughs, given that BlueChew is an ED medication. So while 'chew it and do it' is a rather straightforward tag line, Cohen somehow managed to keep his dignity in the face of Hernandez's prodding with the help of some willful ignorance. 'I did read it well, didn't I?' Cohen asked. 'Oh, you're a champ,' Hernandez responded without giving away anything. 'You're a pro.' In addition to their collective laughter, Mets fans responded to the exchange by reasserting their opinion that Cohen, Hernandez and Ron Darling remain the best announcers in baseball. 'The Mets have the best booth and it's not even close,' one fan wrote on X. Another added: 'I don't know how I will ever survive without these guys at the booth. They have truly left the most largest of shoes to ever fill. It doesn't get better than these guys. They defined my childhood they have been with me my whole life.'
