WH Press Secretary Leavitt to NewsNation's Kellie Meyer: ‘Countless lives will be saved' by Trump's use of Alien Enemies Act

Kellie Meyer, NewsNation Washington Correspondent: What do you say to Americans who want safe streets but are concerned due process is being violated? White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt: The president is using every lever lever of his executive authority and his constitutional authority within the bounds of the immigration laws of our country, to ensure that our streets are safer for law abiding American citizens. And this administration is focused on detaining, arresting, and deporting illegal criminal aliens. And as you saw this past weekend, the president used his authority under the Alien Enemies Act to deport foreign terrorist. Tren de Agua is now a designated US foreign terrorist organization. And as I said, there were nearly 200 trend arugula members who were sent to El Salvador this weekend. Countless lives will be saved because of this action. And if you talk to the families, the angel families, as I mentioned, Blake and Riley and Jocelyn Gray, they understand the grave cost of life at the hands of these illegal terrorists. And the president is proud to deliver on that promise for them. Kellie Meyer, NewsNation Washington Correspondent: And just to follow up on that, this will be challenged later today in the courts. And does the president, you know, does this allow us to allow him to defy the court order without having this, the checks and balances and the separation of power? White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt: No. In fact, this administration acted within the confines of the law, again, within the president's constitutional authority and under the authority granted to him under the Alien Enemies Act. We are quite confident in that, and we are wholly confident that we are going to win this case in court.

Delta Air Lines Flight Crashes At Toronto Airport, Injuring 8

A Delta Air Lines passenger jet that departed from Minneapolis crashed at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, landing on the runway upside down but injuring few passengers. The airport acknowledged that there had been an 'incident' after social media users shared video and images of a Delta flight completely upturned with smoke billowing from it. BREAKING- Toronto had a Delta flight flipped upside down. I got these photos from a friend on the plane. He's okay. Minnesota to Toronto. — Kellie Meyer (@KellieMeyerNews) February 17, 2025 'Toronto Pearson is aware of an incident upon landing involving a Delta Airlines plane arriving from Minneapolis. Emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew are accounted for,' the airport said in a statement. Delta said in a statement it was aware of reports that one of its jets had been in an incident and that it was working to confirm any details. Peel Regional Police, whose jurisdiction includes the airport, told ABC News that eight people are injured, with one person whose condition is 'critical with non-life-threatening injuries.' Seven people suffered moderate to mild injuries, the department said. The flight, DL 4819, was carrying 80 passengers when it crashed, the Federal Aviation Administration said. FAA confirms accident w DL 4819: it 'crashed while landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Canada around 2:45 time on Monday, February 17. All 80 people on board were evacuated. The CRJ-900 departed Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport.' — Kris Van Cleave (@krisvancleave) February 17, 2025 Twitter: @krisvancleave Elise Golgowski, a traveler waiting to depart from Pearson, shared with HuffPost that the airport announced there had been an incident and had suspended all flights and flight check-ins. Video from Golgowski showed an American Airlines employee at Pearson telling travelers at the check-in counter to 'go on Twitter, TikTok ― you'll see what happened. ... We don't have any information, but there was an incident that happened. That's all we know.' The employee told travelers that some passengers may not be able to get on new flights until Wednesday. The accident comes days after President Donald Trump began firing hundreds of FAA personnel hired for radar, landing and navigational aid maintenance. The union representing those employees, the Professional Aviation Safety Specialists, said in a statement Saturday that it was a 'hastily made decision.' 'This draconian action will increase the workload and place new responsibilities on a workforce that is already stretched thin,' the union said. Monday's crash and Trump's gutting of the agency come just weeks after a commercial flight and a military helicopter collided in midair at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., and killed all 67 people on board. Days before that tragic crash, Trump fired all the members of the Aviation Security Advisory Committee, a panel tasked with airline and airport safety issues.
