CFL suspends Turay, fines three others for their roles in post-game melee

B.C. Lions' Kemoko Turay, left, tackles Montreal Alouettes quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson (4) during second half CFL football action in Montreal, Saturday, July 5, 2025. (Graham Hughes / The Canadian Press) TORONTO — The CFL on Wednesday suspended B.C. Lions defensive lineman Kemoko Turay for one game and fined three others for their roles in a post-game altercation last week. The incident occurred following B.C.'s 21-20 road win over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday night, which ended on Sean Whyte's 43-yard field goal. Turay and Montreal defensive lineman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund became involved in an altercation outside the Alouettes' locker room, prompting others to join in. Turay received a one-game ban for committing a non-football act — inciting a post-game altercation. Adeyemi-Berglund and Montreal's M.J. Sherman received fines for committing a non-football act — engaging in a post-game altercation — while Alouettes offensive lineman Pier-Olivier Lestage was also fined for making inappropriate contact with a TSN camera operator. CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston oversees suspendible offences, while discipline is handled by the league's department of health, safety and integrity. The department includes chief football operations officer Greg Dick, vice-president of officiating Darren Hackwood, associate vice-president of football operations Ryan Janzen and associate vice-president of health and safety Eric Noivo. 'Non-football acts negatively impact the reputation and professional standing of the CFL and they will not be tolerated,' Johnston said in a statement. 'These actions do not reflect the values of our league. 'The post-game altercation in Montreal became an unnecessary focal point, taking away from an incredibly entertaining game won on the final play.' The CFL also announced Wednesday that Ottawa linebacker Frankie Griffin was fined for delivering a high hit on Edmonton quarterback Tre Ford. As per CFL policy, the league does not announce the amounts of player fines. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 9, 2025.

B.C. Lions linebacker says 'misconception' led to post-game brawl with Alouettes

The B.C. Lions were still waiting to hear Monday afternoon if there will be any supplemental discipline handed down by the CFL head office for the brawl that took place moments after their 21-20 walk-off win over the host Montreal Alouettes on Saturday. Article content Several players from both sides were involved in the fracas just outside the tunnel that leads to the Alouettes dressing room. Lions defensive lineman Kemoko Turay and Montreal defensive lineman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund were central figures. There also was an unidentified practice roster player in street clothes who seemed to be in the middle of it as well. TSN's camera doing post-game interviews on the field caught Lions players running toward the melee. Article content The Lions had won the game on a 43-yard field goal from Sean Whyte with no time showing on the clock. Article content 'Right now, it's in the league's hands,' Lions head coach Buck Pierce said Monday. 'We'll discuss with them. Article content Tempers flared after the game Lions/Alouettes game in Montreal tonight 👀 — TSN (@TSN_Sports) July 6, 2025 Article content According to a statement that Turay sent to 3DownNation via a Lions representative, he had gone toward the Montreal dressing room to reconnect with Alouettes offensive lineman Jamar McGloster, who he knows from past football stops. Turay explained that 'he was approached by another individual who was trash-talking and telling him to leave the area.' Tempers flared. He maintained that Adeyemi-Berglund landed the first punch. Article content Montreal head coach Jason Maas had a different story for the media there Saturday, telling them that 'apparently someone tried to get into our locker room, and you're not just going to get into our locker room.' Maas admitted that he didn't see how the incident started. Article content 'I don't know what happened. I know our team, our guys, did not feel very good about someone else trying to step into our locker room after that game, but I'll let everything get sorted out,' Maas said. 'I'm sure they got plenty of video on it to see what did transpire. I don't think any player around the league needs to go into an opposition locker room right after a game, let alone that kind of game.' Article content 'Nobody is going to accomplish anything by going into the other team's locker room alone. It's just common sense,' Awe said. Article content 'It was just a miscommunication across the teams, where someone thought something was happening. That's all it was. I know all those guys. I was like 'just back up. No big deal. Move on. It's a long season.'' Article content Article content Lions offensive lineman Chris Schleuger and George Una, along with Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive linemen Micah Johnson and Mike Rose, were all fined by the league last week for their roles in an altercation during B.C.'s 37-18 loss to the Roughriders on June 28. There were five players across the league fined then. Article content B.C. offensive lineman Kory Woodruff was fined by the league for making contact with an official during B.C.'s 27-14 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on June 21. Woodruff was one of eight players fined that week. Article content
