Snooker legends meet seaside care home residents

Residents at a seaside care home have been treated to a visit from two former snooker world champions. Dennis Taylor and Ken Doherty visited Eversley Lodge Nursing Home in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, to play snooker and share memories with residents. Their visit came 40 years after Taylor's big win in a memorable black-ball final at the 1985 World Snooker Championship in Sheffield. "Here we are still loving every minute of it... It's a great bit of fun," Taylor said. Both players said they were not sure what they were in for when they headed to the home. "We didn't know what we were coming to, really. When we turned up we were so surprised... What a beautiful place," Taylor said. Doherty said: "It's brilliant... We haven't done many exhibitions in care homes before. "A lot of people here would have watched snooker over the years and really enjoyed it, so it's great to see them in such a wonderful environment." The 1997 world champion reminisced about the last time he visited Norfolk's coastline. "It's been over 40 years since I was last here playing in the Home Junior International in Hemsby... I've always really enjoyed it here," he said. The care home's manager, Danielle Bullent, said a lot of work went into setting up the home for the exhibition. She said it took staff four hours to get the snooker table ready. Speaking about the anniversary of his championship win, Taylor, famous for his unique "upside-down" glasses, said he was glad people still talked about it. "Forty years on and people still turn their glasses upside down, raise an imaginary cue above their head and wag their finger at me," he said. "I hope they keep doing it for many more years to come." Ken Doherty misses out on place at Wuhan Open

Ken Doherty failed in his bid to secure a spot in the Wuhan Open in August, losing his qualifier against Ben Woollaston 5-1 in Leicester. With Aaron Hill and Jordan Brown also in situ for the tournament, 1997 world champion and world number 122 Doherty was hoping to join the Irish pair, but came up short against the English player. Earlier this week Hill saw off England's Sam Craigie 5-1 with four breaks over 50, while world number 53 Brown beat Duane Jones 5-1. The Antrim man is back in action today in Leicester where he plays Louis Heathcote for a place in the final stages of the British Open, which begins in September. Fergal Quinn and Leone Crowley also missed out on the tournament proper on their respective WST debuts. Quinn lost out 5-0 to world number 46 Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, while Crowley also lost 5-0 to 2010 world champion Neil Robertson.

Snooker legend Jimmy White coming to Kerry village this Bank Holiday weekend

Widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation, 63-year-old White, who was nicknamed 'The Whirlwind' in his heyday, will be taking part in an exhibition match on the night as well as a meet and greet with fans before a BBQ and a Q & A session afterward. While he enjoyed a remarkable career, winning two of snooker's Triple Crown events, the 1984 Masters and the 1992 UK Championship, he is still regarded as one of the greatest players never to win the coveted World Snooker Championships in which he reached six finals over the course of his career, finishing runner up on each of the occasions. The night is being organised by Mike Parker and all funds raised from the night will go towards the Kilflynn Community Together group. 'We've had Denis Taylor and Ken Doherty here at the pub before so it was only right that Jimmy be the next big name that we get. Ticket sales are starting to pick now so hopefully we'll have a good crowd there on the night to raise funds for the group,' Mike Parker of Parker's Pub told The Kerryman. Mike Brady meanwhile is the Chairperson of the Kilflynn Community Together Group and he also spoke to The Kerryman to let people know what work the volunteer-led group gets up to in the community. 'We're just a small community-based organisation who are responsible for the general upkeep of the village. We try to take on small projects around the place, too. We look after Halloween here, St Patrick's Day, the Christmas tree and lights, all that sort of stuff. We are completely dependent on donations. We're delighted that Mike is doing this for us, we got a few bob from when he had Ken Doherty there as well so anything we can get at all is a big help,' said Mike. V.I.P tickets for the event will cost €20 and the doors will open on the night at 7pm with the first frame set for 8.15pm. Standard tickets meanwhile will cost €10. They can be bought from Parker's Pub itself or from the pub's website.
